“Lovely Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2013

It's true that this Hotel has seen grander days in terms of the décor, and the changing rooms and leisure facilities badly need refurbishment. However, the Hotel is friendly, well located and the sea view rooms have fabulous views. When taking our young disabled son, the management and reception staff went to extraordinary lengths to make his stay special. He was given small gifts, greeted like an old friend, and made to feel very special. He asked to move in - or at least to go back every school holiday! The slightly 'faded elegance' actually makes families feel more comfortable and the extra money spent on a sea view makes all of the difference. We will certainly be returning.

Room Tip: sea views are great

Loved staying here. Ewa at reception was amazing. Really welcoming and happy. She found us a sea view room as there had been a cancellation and we were able to book in early.
The sun came out which was a bonus so we sunbathed on our sheltered balcony overlooking the bay. Perfect.
Another reason we stayed was for the pool..which was warm. Good hot steam room and hot tub. Showers and changing rooms could do with a little updating but ok.
Wasn't keen on paying extra for car park...
However, having a sea view from our bedroom, going swimming and eating a massive delicious breakfast was the best 24 hour break and well worth it. Enjoy!
ps. pool room too

I have stayed at the Imperial on a number of ocassions and each time I have been impressed by the standard of service. Many things that no longer occur in other hotels still are part of the service here such as valet parking, cases taken to your room and a pleasant reception at which they acknowledge that you are the important person in their hotel.
They really make you feel special and this is reflected throughout the hotel, all the staff are extremely pleasant.
An enjoyable experience on every ocassion.

We were able to check in earlynwhich was a bonus as we have travelled so far. Standard room was ok and clean but a little dated but good for the price. Views from the bars and breakfast

We visit Torquay on a regular basis to see family. The Imperial is a good base for visiting the surrounding areas. The hotel offers good value for money. There are some good staff such as Ewa on reception who created exactly the sort of welcome you want and some who are not so good, but that is the same everywhere in the UK. Rooms are good if a little dated but offer a high standard of comfort compared to most in the surrounding area.
We will definitely book this hotel again for our next trip to Torquay.

If you have to stay in Torquay then the Imperial is the only place to stay. Do get a room with a sea view, well worth the extra. Food is hit and miss but there are two excellent restaurants just down the road, so my advise is just to book B&B. the leisure centre is quite small. Also beware it is a conference hotel, so check in advance if you do not want to be part of 24 hour reverie.

Stayed here last year, it was OK so as we had to attend a funeral in Torquay we decided to go again. The problem with the Imperial is its past. I remember when it was a genuine 5 star luxury hotel. The trouble is a lot of the furniture and fittings remember those days as well! It is tired in parts

We had a de-luxe room which was very competitively priced in a newspaper offer. The booking lady was delightful and persuaded us to have this room with a balcony. Un-believably it was almost too hot and bright!!! The staff were all friendly but I was disappointed by some of the reception staff. Information was hard to obtain and my check-out included car park charges for six nights for a three night stay.

The view over Torbay is fantastic, and our room was big and had a large picture patio door so was very bright. The bed was large, firm but comfortable. The furnishings were tired and drab. I hate the wrought iron chandeliers, out of date in the fifties I would say. The room was generally clean, but there was a big bag of unidentified rubbish on the balcony which we had to ask to be removed. The best one could say about the bathroom was that everything worked. The décor was awful. The marble sink was still stained from cigarette burns and was cracked from front to back. The bath panel was fixed at the top but hanging loose at the bottom. Some tiles were loose or cracked, and sharp screw heads were exposed where the protective domed ends were missing. There had been a lot of silicone sealant applied, a very crude and messy job We had some visitors to the room who after using the bathroom said "Its nowhere near as good as a Premier Inn". Now this is disconcerting because last year we had a room with a superb modern recently re-furbished bathroom. One can only support the hotel in their refurbishment programme, for example this year they had new dining chairs in the dining room. (again fabulous views incidentally), but renewal must all be a very expensive process. Are Torquay customers still willing to pay the prices needed to re-establish the hotel to its prime?

Food was OK. Dinner was acceptable value but I would say was not all prepared fresh to order. Breakfast offered a fabulous choice, but some of buffet "hot" food had been there too long. The rooms do not have a fridge so only tubs of UHT milk are provided. I asked reception for fresh milk. "Certainly sir I will send it right away. About 45 mins later I rang to remind her and it finally came in a small jug via the Porter. The following night I again asked for milk after returning from a meal out. The very same girl on Reception said it would be sent up. I offered to take it myself to avoid delay but she insisted it must be delivered. Nothing happened. After a similar 45 min wait I rang again. "I will make sure it comes straight away", and it did after another 15 minutes. I asked the Porter when he got the call "The Duty Manager told me to bring it up about one and a half minutes ago!!!! "It" was a large jug containing about 2 litres of milk. We only wanted two cups of tea but he insisted oin leaving it all. I suppose we could have bathed in it. It was not nice in the morning with no refrigeration capability! Clearly Fawlty Towers lives on in Torquay. The third night we again requested milk. The smart young man on the desk that night was happy to give it to us to take up. Perfect. They can do it, its just that sometimes they don't.

In summary I like the Imperial. It is well situated, and where refurbished can be very nice. The staff were all very nice and friendly albeit some not competent at times. At the price we paid it was very good value. The food is adequate but close nearby are two restaurants of outstanding quality. I would come here again on an offer but would try to be careful to specify in detail what I wanted. Incidentally those wrought iron chandeliers are so massive they must be worth a fortune as scrap!!!.

Room Tip: Must be a sea view and have a refurbished bathroom. I would have given the room 4 blobs if we had t...
