The Imperial Torquay
Ranked #22 of 85 Hotels in Torquay
Reviewed 17 December 2013

we have just had a christmas function at the hotel, bearing in mind it supposed to be the best in Torquay. The hotel itself is lovely and elligant, with lovely views but the food was a real dissapointment, we felt as if it was cheaply done. The roast potatos were like tinned ones fried, the veg was almost raw, I like crunchy veg, but you cant even cut the cauliflower the same for the sprouts. I must admit I have a better carvery meal for £4.25 than what we paid for this meal, plus the room was like sitting in a sauna. Rather a let down and wont be booking anymore Christmas functions here.

We recently attended a wedding here and had booked in for a 2 night stay.
We didnt check in until nearly midnight and were pleasantly surprised when we got to our room!
We were on the 4th floor looking out to see, we didnt hear a peep from any of the other rooms nearby and had a balcony and sun lounger at our disposal - This was no use in December but would love to have the same room in warmer weather!

Breakfast was very nice too, a good selection of food and staff were attentive and helpful.

Parking was free and there were plenty of spaces available which is always a plus point!

Enjoyed our stay, would definately like to stay again in the summer months.

Room Tip: 4th Floor for the win!

My colleagues and I went to the Imperial for our Xmas night out and every single one of us were disappointed. The food was absolutely disgusting and tasteless! At one point I was asked if it was cat vomit hidden under the rubbery, tasteless turkey. Not only was the food shocking, but the staff were like soldiers running around with their clip boards, which made a horrible atmosphere. Lastly, the price of drinks in this place were outrageous. I don't mind paying over the odds for the occasional night out, but £8.20 for a double vodka and coke was just too far.

Avoid this place at all costs.

My wife and I have stayed at the Imperial three times before. We have asked for sea view and having joined their Leisure Card (covers all PUMA hotels) we have been upgraded to superior rooms. These are huge with Super King bed, modern bathroom, balcony complete with sun loungers and the most amazing view over Torbay to Brixham. The hotel is slowly being refurbished by Puma. The rooms are great; the corridors still creak and the carpet is showing its age. These are being replaced aver time. The hotel has indoor and outdoor pools and a well equipped gym, plus treatment rooms. The bar, lounges and restaurant all have the great views.
The bar food is excellent. Freshly prepared and well presented. The staff are friendly and very helpful. Breakfast is a hot and cold buffet including porridge (if you look for it). My only criticism is the dinner menu. I asked for the seafood selection and it was all pre-prepared and I suspect from large frozen packets. The sort you would buy from a supermarket to reheat. With Brixham across the bay and the most superb fish restaurant about 100 yards away ("No. 7"), I was disappointed. We stuck to the bar menu the next night. We really love the Imperial. Slightly old fashioned but good rooms, amazing views, comfy lounges. easy walking distance into Torquay and a nearby ferry across the bay to Brixham (spring and summer only).

Room Tip: Just ask for a sea view or garden room. Higher rooms have the very best views. We were in 328.

Excellent comfortable 2 day stay at this lovely hotel overlooking Torquay harbour. Compliments to the very artistic chef for his food and presentation.
My only real 'quibble' at this hotel is, as a guest, having to pay £7 a day parking!

Stayed for weekend, check in for us was quick and efficient and porter took bags to room.
Room on fourth floor, old fashioned and in need of update ,but clean and tidy ,comfy bed!
Bathroom could also do with update, but functional!
Pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, v quiet and all areas clean and tidy, free towel on signing in, lockers for clothes available, also water machine. Small gym.
Excellent breakfast, had window table with fab view of bay, self service, loads of choice and all fresh and hot, also choice of pastries, fruit, meats ,smoked salmon etc, plentiful , no queue ing and prompt service.
Short walk to the harbour and town
Parking steep charge £7 per night, should be included, also they should address the noisy shutting bedroom doors!
All in all good stay
