“Fantastic Break in Torquay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 June 2014

Rather than our usual 3 star break stayed two nights in The Imperial, Room 112 which is a Large Delux Suite, everything in this room is outstanding two televisions, separate toilet and bathroom and a massive balcony shared with the room next door.
Both Breakfast and the Evening meal were excellent. Well worth the extra cash to go 4 Star rather than 2 or 3 star we usually do in Torquay.
From arrival at reception to departing, the staff we encountered couldn't have been more helpful.

Room Tip: Get a sea view, well worth the extra as you can see the whole of Torbay from this cliff side hotel.

Just returned from a 4 days stay at this hotel.Car park is a tight squeeze for 4x4 and a steep hill to climb back from the town but plenty of cheap taxis about for the unfit .
Hotel is dated which I liked ,saying that most of the guests were!
Brilliant view from Premier room, clean.good service and excellent food but a bit pricey for lunch time sandwiches best to vist Subway in the town.

Room Tip: dont do 320 view is excellent but its next to the lift .

We have been several times to the Imperial and we love it because of the amazing sea views. Staff are friendly and courteous, food very good in a dining room overlooking a fabulous seascape. We always have a room with a balcony - great bargains to be had with a little research on the internet. We like short breaks and this hotel for this type of holiday. We shall definitely be returning.

I have no idea how this hotel hangs onto its four star rating. It is very tired and there is NO excuse for the place being dirty.

I have never had to queue up to check into an hotel before, the two receptionists were obviously under pressure and did not provide the best of welcomes, also there was no porter to take bags to the room, not even an offer of one, or the sight of one.

In the room it was immediately obvious that the room was very tired.
Glass water mark stains on the bedside cabinets.
Wallpaper trimming hanging from the wall.
A shelf or something had come off the wall and the holes and ripped wallpaper just left hanging.
Filthy filthy filthy windows.
Central light fitting with wonky lights all covered in dust.
A slight rub of the carpet with a damp cloth showed it was disgustingly dirty.
There was an ill fitting black bed valence on the bed, which was dirty with a stain marked base sheet. (unfortunately I did not notice this until I turned down the bed, late in the evening) yes I had to turn down the bed, there was no room service for that.
There was no mini bar, but there was the remains of one with a hole where the missing handle had been..
The stairs and hallways throughout the hotel have tired wallpaper and there are so many obvious stains on the carpets.

We went for a swim in the outdoor pool, not a pleasant experience. The whole area is scruffy and dirty, there were dirty drinks glasses everywhere and the changing room didn't look like it had been cleaned out this season, with pine needles in all the corners.
One of my party decided not to swim and sat down at a table on the pool terrace, there were dirty glasses on all the tables, when I joined him half an hour later the dirty glasses were still there, we had to ask a passing member of staff to clear them away, at the same time my colleague asked if he could have a Pimms to drink, some time later another of my colleagues joined us and went into the bar to get himself a drink, we asked him to enquire about the Pimms we had ordered earlier, he returned with his drink, horrified because he had asked for a Gin and Cinzano and the bar didn't have any Cinzano, in fact the bar person didn't even know what it was, and the bar person was not aware of any order for a Pimms. Maybe ten minutes later the original member of staff returned with the Pimms very apologetic saying she had forgotten. No one took any notice of the cigarette ends all over the terrace, which people in bare feet were trying to avoid stepping on.

At dinner, the dining room was incredibly hot we asked if the air conditioning was working and were informed that the air conditioning throughout the hotel was broken. we asked if some fans could be put in the dining room and when we complained to the manager, his answer was something about “well we inherited a load of debts when the company took over the hotel” Something we pointed out should not affect our stay as paying customers, we had to leave our dinner as it was just unbearably hot in the dining room.
Breakfast the following morning, could not be faulted, after which we thought we would visit the indoor pool and leisure area, we could see that the whole place was dirty with foot marks on the walls, something a member of staff could easily clean off with a damp cloth and some Cif, unfortunately the staff were all too busy chatting amongst themselves, with no regard for anyone.

When we checked out, it was very important for the receptionist to make sure he charged me for parking my car overnight but not so important for him to give us a card to actually work the barrier to exit the car park, meaning after 15 minutes of trying to get out, I had to return to reception and ask for a card.

This hotel is fabulously positioned with incredible views of Torbay, but it needs a good steam clean and redecorating. It should also be downgraded to two stars.

Room Tip: Book into another hotel

Stayed at this hotel for two nights for a wedding,
Good points...
Nice room (number 47)
Nice outdoor pool
Good location
Huge super king bed in our room

Bad points
Awful service
Overpriced
Check in took ages
Food was awful
Drink choice is awful
Jacuzzi was about 50c way to hot and had a pipe running into it with boiling water coming out
One waitress in particular was so so rude.
Wedding food was the absolute worst I've tasted
Glasses and plates were dirty
The breakfast was horrible

Would not stay there again... And would definitely not pay £280 for what you get.
No way is this a 4 star hotel

A very pleasant 2 night stay, booked for 1 night but extended to 2 nights.on DBB rate. View from premium balcony room across Torbay is superb.
Location for the town is good.
Hotel is looking a bit "tired" and needs freshening up.
Restaurant was was very nice as was the food from the table'dote menu but it was far too hot to be comfortable, why was the aircon not working.
