The Imperial Torquay
Ranked #22 of 85 Hotels in Torquay
Reviewed 13 August 2014

I had to review this hotel as soon as I got home. My 12 yr old son & I turned up at the hotel like orphans after we were let down by a really dire caravan site. We already had a 'Secret Escapes' break booked for the Mon and Tues night and although the Imperial could not understandably move our break forward (it's peak summer holiday time), they bent over backwards to book us in for the following evening and arranged for us to be booked into the Grand for the 1st night. Chrissie and Mia (or Mya - sorry if spelt wrong) the reception girls combined a very slick service with a very down to earth and warm manner - well done girls you saved our holiday!!:) and considering the Powerboat Championships were on, the hotel lobby was choc-a-bloc with people and the phone was 'off the hook' - they remained unflappable. From the offset the ambience of the hotel was very cool, calm & collected without being 'showy'. Call me old fashioned (i'm only 43) but this is what hotels used to be like. Service with a 'genuine smile' & hearts in the right places. After a night at the Grand (There's another fab review coming up) I noticed a 'family room' had come available on a room booking website. The Grand enabled me to make a call to the Imperial and instead of the standard double which was all they had we had a beautiful family room with balcony and sea views!!! that was already cleaned so we could move straight in. From thereon in the 4 night stay was probably the best holiday I've ever had. The Secret Escapes booking meant we had to change rooms but this was no inconvenience!!! Another beautiful deluxe room on the 3rd floor with views across Torbay that were breathtaking. I literally kept the curtains open to wake up to the dawn sky as I lay in bed. We were lucky enough to see the fireworks from our balcony as well! My son particularly enjoyed the 3 course meal and 'high tea' with scones & cakes and noticed that the bar staff didn't stop - they worked really hard. I would like to mention a certain little lady who made our stay more special and that's Barbara. She cleaned her socks off!!! and those rooms in the garden level are absolutely immaculate. She works very hard and deserves a medal as she puts her heart & soul in to that job. Overall The Imperial combines traditional values within a beautifully modern hotel that has EVERYTHING you need. Hats off to you The Imperial!! You derserve that 5th star xxxxxx

Room Tip: We are keeping the best room to ourselves so it won't get overbooked hee hee :D

The hotel is in a great location and it is easy to walk into Torquay and visit shops and restaurants. We stayed for one night and had a quiet sea facing room on the second floor. The hotel was a little tired, but still gracious and with a sense of history about it. The staff were friendly and helpful, but on one occasion the reception was unmanned and we had to wait for a few minutes for anyone to appear. In the dining room the bread appeared at dinner, but no butter and the wine appeared well after we had finished our second course. Breakfast was nice (very good black pudding!), but would have benefited from non metallic tea and coffee pots. There seemed to be plenty to do if you had children, but on the evening we stayed there was nothing in the way of entertainment for adults, even though we were in the high season. We would stay again, but feel just a few tweaks to the service could take the rating up another notch.

Had a 2 night stay at the imperial and wished we could have stayed on for longer..Have no idea where these negative reviews come from!!!The management and staff were always very helpful and friendly. we didn't encounter one unfriendly face the whole two days. Alright we paid for an upgrade for a room with a "sea view" and it was well worth it. The room was very spacious and very clean and the balcony was lovely (with sun loungers) with some great views of Torbay!!!!! Breakfast was great from fresh fruit, yoghurts, croissants and your English fry up with lots of availability. Staff at breakfast were very pleasant and attentive.
Weather was lovely so we were able to make use of the outdoor pool as well - Bonus!!!! Would definitely return!!!

Room Tip: Go for a room with balcony & sea view

My boyfriend picked this hotel for a romantic getaway, it was really romantic, the hotel is full of old charm and character. We stayed on the 4th floor in room 426, we had a great big room with separate dressing area and large enough bathroom. It is a little dated but that added to its charm.

The staff upon arrival were so friendly, in fact all the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. We had breakfast which was nice but didn't sample any other food at the hotel as Torquay town centre is minutes from the hotels door so why would you?? With the amount of great restaurants and bars on your doorstep you'd be a fool to stay and eat at the hotel.

The views were spectacular, I really couldn't get enough of them which I think makes up for the rather dated look of the interiors and tired bathroom. Our only complaint was that the shower was awful, it had no power at all so it wasn't a particularly nice experience however the bath tub was deep and filled up in minutes which was nice.

Overall it was a lovely relaxing weekend, we had great food, great views and a great weekend, the hotel was one that I would definitely go back to....just as soon as they upgrade those showers.

Room Tip: 4th floor have the best views and are the furthest away from the bar area, which if there is a weddi...

We stayed at the imperial for just one night (as a treat) in august. Our room and view was stunning, the food was delicious and most of the staff were really friendly but we were let down by the poor welcome by reception staff, lack of information and general unfriendliness! What a shame as the rest of our stay was brilliant!

The views are fantastic especially from the 4th floor. The rooms are shabby the bath in 421 was dangerous to get out of and the shower was either too hot or cold!
The bar staff were poorly trained and the food mediocre. Would certainly not rate this a 4 star hotel. The dining room staff were better trained but the food was not good value for money.

We booked a three day stay in Imperial Torquay recently , we had a problem with the room type due to misleading information when confirming booking . The management were extremely unhelpful and because we complained they cancelled our booking less thank 24 hours before we were due to check in. The resold our room at an inflated price for more Han £250 more than we had paid when we booked . We were on their sparkle package which apparently allows no changes and no refund. They for it to say unless it suits them then they may cancel . I stayed in this hotel many years ago on business trips and it was lovely , obviously things have hanged therefore unless under different management In the future i wouldn't rebook. They don't value their customers . We pay a lot for hotels in the UK by comparison to abroad and really shouldn't be treated in this offhand way .shame on the management of the Imperial.
