“Food and service poor”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 April 2012

We booked a DB&B rate and the dinner first night was very poor - stone cold in fact and not properly cooked. Told waitress who did absolutely nothing. Asked at reception to change for B&B rate for next day as dinner was so poor but got no help and manager never got back to us with an answer. Breakfast variable - sausages had a casing of leather and coffee watery and tasteless. Room OK - bathroom could be cleaner mould on grouting in shower. Bed was very hard and uncomfortable. Bar expensive and no English beer - only lager. Wine expensive £9 for 2 small glasses. Although lounge area was virtually empty were told we could not sit by window because it was for dining only and we wanted afternoon coffee (it was 4.00 pm) Five minutes later another couple sat there and had tea! Five minutes after that another couple told they also could not sit by window. Staff seemed quite confused. For the price much better places to be found.

The best thing about this hotel is the lounge where one can enjoy drinks, an excellent (although not cheap) bar menu and where there is entertainment on weekend evening. There are plenty of professional staff an it is a pleasant room with sea views. In fact the waiters in this room are excellent - always attentive and keen to please.

I visit Torquay frequently but usually stay at another hotel. As that was full on this occasion I stayed at the Grand. I had a sea facing single room. On the plus side the room was freshly decorated. On the minus side this had been done on the cheap. The overall effect was far from luxurious. For example, the lighting is flourescent giving a harsh unwelcoming light, and the light shades are so thin and cheap that the fourrecent tube is clrearly visible. The TV was small and cheap. Also the coridords are threadbare/tatty.

I had Sunday lunch which was good, and there was a pianist which I adds a nice tone to proceedings.

Overall, there was nothing badly wrong but I don't think the Grand merits the prices it charges for its cheaply decorated rooms. I will continue to drink/dine in the lounge but will stay elsewhere.

We arrived in Torquay just for a couple of nights with the kids and I knew of the Grand so we called them, the lady doing reservations was helpful, we got a reasonable DB&B rate in a family room with a sea view. Reception on check in were very friendly, our bags were taken away as the room wasn’t ready and these were placed in the room by the time we had returned from a walk round town. View from the room was beautiful. The room itself was par for the course, nothing special but generally clean and acceptable for two nights. Bathroom was clean and the shower was pretty good too. Had lunch in the bar, it seemed a bit chaotic as it was very very busy but we got our food in a reasonable time and it was really tasty & fresh. The bar lounge area was light bright and had great views across the bay. The evening dinner in the restaurant was good, in fact very good. The kids enjoyed the food too which is always a bonus. Breakfast was good, great choice between pastries, cereals, cooked etc. The restaurant staff were helpful, polite and genuinely happy to help. We had a minor issue which the restaurant manager sorted instantly without any quibbling.
We used the swimming pool on both days, it was ok. It was a bit tired and the changing rooms a bit grubby but probably no worse than any other public swimming pool. I found out that the Riviera Centre (a five min walk down the road) has a good pool but we ran out of time so we’ll check it out next time.
At night the hotel was quite, I’ve paid some serious money in the past for top notch 5* hotels and had no sleep due to noise but the Grand was fine and even the road at the front of the hotel was barely audible. The bed wasn’t great, a but lumpy but ok for a couple of nights.
Would we come back ?.....absolutely. Overall the food, the staff and the location were excellent, things like the beds could do with replacing and the pool could do with some TLC but other than that we had a great stay and if we can get a decent deal next time we’ll stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view !!!!

Staff on reception slow dealing with people so your waiting a bit. Room very big clean good view of sea, bathroom big let down older than old. Turn down every night great pleasure. Tea/coffee facilities very good. Gym rubbish nothing worked hardly very small. Swimming pool ok, BUT changing area wasn't very clean. Everything else ok. But at breakfast one certain lady oldish no names being mentioned was rude unhelpful and talking about guests behind their backs which I didn't like as I was one of those guests:))) I'm smiling now but not at the time excellent location and a lovely place to explore plenty todo verygood

Stayed at the Grand for 3 nights in March. It was first class.
Got a very good deal for Bed, Breakfast & Dinner.
Room very nice...meals also very good...staff excellent.
Position near to promenade very nice and also very convenient for railway station.
Even the weather was good!
This is the second time we have stayed at the Grand and will definitely be back.

Everything was fine about the hotel, location, service, meals. We stayed 4 nights for a conference. It is not opulent but a solid 4*. Rooms will need updating if they expect to charge Rack rates. Breakfast can be more varied.

We stayed at this hotel with our two small children for my husbands birthday. I read some of the reviews before I booked but as always I like to decide for myself. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left all I can say is what a magical stay we had. Check in was quick and the receptionist was very polite. I had previously emailed the hotel to ask do they provide birthday cakes which they do. I also emailed them that as this was a special occasion could we have a room with a sea view. We had a lovely room with a sea view. The room was very spacious and clean. We had a three course meal at dinner and it was delightful. My 6 year old even commented on how lovely the waiters was. The birthday cake was presented after dinner and was well worth the £15.00 I paid for it. The children loved the swimming pool. We will definitely stay again in the near future. Credit to all staff that made our stay magical.
