The Grand Hotel never fails to please, lovely to see the open fire in the library, everyone is very helpful and they all take the time to make your stay easy. The only moan I have is the front of the bar area has been taken over by tables for people who want snack meals this means people staying in the hotel and eating in the dining room never have a chance to sit in this area, it would be nice to have comfy seating for people to relax after their meal, sometimes there was not enough places to sit in the bar and the 'bistro' dining was empty, it does seem a little unfair that people coming in to eat snack meals which can be eaten anywhere take over such a lovely area. If the bistro is necessary could not be placed in one of the front conference rooms as it seems unfair that people paying for full board miss out.

We spent 2 nights here recently and on our way stopped at The Grosvenor for lunch, just to see if it was as bad as depicted on the TV .(it was)
We were informed that they were so busy that a lot of their clients had been sent to the Grand,I think that with this tactic the RIchardsons run the risk of lowering the Grand to Grosvenor status rather than raising the Grosvenor up towards the Grand.
In my opinion they would have been better advised to spend the Million Pounds upgrading the Grand!!

Good morning Peter,
Thank you for taking the time to post a review for the Grand Hotel along with your feedback regarding the Grosvenor Hotel too.
The Grosvenor was purchased in October 2012 by the Richardson Group. It is a beautiful hotel that has been neglected over many years. It is now being invested in and it will soon be back to being a very respectable hotel. It has already had thousands spent on it but unfortunately this investment is not easily visible to our guests, for example a new boiler enhances the stay but it doesn't add value, likewise the new fire safety features we have installed ensure that our guests sleep safe at night, but these safety features don't help to create a better first impression on arrival. Bedrooms are currently being refurbished, customer service training is happening and improvements are being made in all departments every day.
The Grand Hotel is also being invested in. The Grand and Grosvenor are just two of the five hotels in our group and they are all being invested in.
The Grand's ground floor and public areas are very 'Grand', welcoming, comfortable and they are always full of vibrant atmosphere. A bedroom refurbishment plan has been created and a the difficult process of decorating so many bedrooms and corridors has already begun.
I really do appreciate your feedback and I do hope that you will visit both the Grand and the Grosvenor again in the future. I can honestly say that I have two fantastic teams of staff at both hotels, investment is happening and the future for Richardson Hotels looks bright.
If I can be of any further asssistance my email address is gm.grand@richardsonhotels.co.uk.
Kind regards
Chris Jones

The Grand is in a lovely position on the seafront and next to the beautiful train station with a large park area just across the road (very handy for dog walking) - which is the great thing about this hotel being dog friendly.
The reception, library, bar and restaurant are beautiful, the pool, sauna, jacuzzi could do with tarting up, the changing rooms are verging on grotty!
All staff were attentive, unfortunately alot were foriegn making even simple requests more difficult. A big thanks to our waiter Jack who was excellent and a credit to the hotel.
Not sure if being a busy weekend (mothers day)
I had a excellent weekend being with my family so to be honest the hotel was second to being with family as far as my stay went.
My room was not ready when we arrived and it was in defo need of a update from 1980 decor, but I think this is the same with all old large hotels struggling to keep up in this awful economic climate and our UK weather hasnt helped, hence no money to spend on refurb and selling rooms at dirt cheap prices to fill rooms has given it a slightly below 4 star feel.
Would love to go again but will make a point of upgrading my room, most mention I loved the clipper tea and hot chocolate in the room and my bed was exeptionally comfortable.
Would love to return with family as the hotel deserves to do well.

Room Tip: sea view, low floor, maybe upgrade

We were greeted by most efficient & helpful reception staff. Directed to a room which we found unacceptable (we requested sea view - not dirty asphalt & tired flags). So we "upped" to a grander room. This was acceptable & although very clean, had seen better days.
Dinner was excellent, service good but wine list extremely limited. Breakfast the next morning was, I must say, just about adequate - lack of choice, food tepid.
We did find all the staff, throughout the hotel, friendly & attentive.
All in all, typical tired English hotel

We brought my parents to this hotel for their wedding anniversary. On arrival we were greeted by a very accomodating man who checked us in. The reception, bar and restaurant area look spectacular, very clean, shiny and posh!
When we got to our rooms, we did find they were a little dated, and our room had an old telly with very poor signal! Bathroom was very cramped and had to sit sideways on the toilet! Also both of our rooms were extremely hot - we had the window open the whole time and still sweated!!!!
Aside from this, the breakfast was lovely, hot and service was great. We had a few drinks in the bar on the Saturday evening and again servoce was exceptional, and the singer was a joy to watch!

Room Tip: Pay a bit more and you get more quality.

One night stay for dinner. Welcoming and helpful staff, good restaurant with very good service despite hotel being pretty nearly full. Rooms though are sad and tired. Everything works but tv very small, bathrooms cramped, and fittings very dated. Beds still use blankets. A four star hotel should have dressing gowns, flannels and effective wifi - the Gand failed in all these areas. Still about the best in Torquay.

Our 2nd time here as location is beautiful. Firstly, parking is very limited, I mean approx. 20 cars for residents. It seems the car wash men who work inside the hotels parking garage have a say whether a space can be parked in or not - we ventured out 1 morning after leaving the hotel garage only to return to the space we had vacated was coned off. We asked why this was and the chap stated that he thought it was too small for a car to fit into and yet we managed just fine!! He did move the cone for us though, bless him!
Upon walking into the hotel lobby, it is most certainly deserving of its 4 stars. Staff manning the reception are also very polite, welcoming and attentive. The bar area, library and restaurant continue the beautiful decor and stunning old features of the building. Unfortunately, I can not say the same for our room. It wasn't awful, don't get me wrong, but there were areas of the room that hadn't seen a duster in a few weeks, stains on light switches and a mattress with more lumps in it than granny's mash. The worst part was the black mould that was caked on the shower head - we were reluctant to even turn the thing on and when we did have a shower, the temperature goes hot and cold without even touching it - probably came out dirtier than when we stepped in! Our rooms window also wasn't sealed very well, so when fully closed, wind constantly blew through the seal and the noise from the main road did too. Plus points are the delicious hot and cold breakfast and the extras in the room; bath products, biscuits, bottled water, etc.
We also could not get over how blooming hot the whole building was - I'm talking tropical temperatures - you have been warned!
So, to sum up, my opinion of this hotel is a bit like our morning showers there - hot and cold!
