“What a lovely surprise!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2013

We arrived at this hotel which we had booked online not quite sure what we should expect. We were really very pleasantly surprised. The service was first class, the staff very efficient and friendly and the atmosphere was really lovely. Our room was 405 with a sea view and was a very nice, comfortable room. Not the most spacious room, but the bed was very comfortable and the pillows amazing! Everything was clean and in good order.
Breakfast was good quality fare and the hot food was hot, not the luke-warm stuff they serve up elsewhere. We loved the bar in the evenings where there was cabaret on both the Friday and Saturday evenings. I would definitely return to this really nice hotel and - hope to do so this summer.

Room Tip: Any with a sea view would be best.

I've stayed at The Grand on a few occasions, beautiful hotel, food at 1881 / Gainsborough delightful even had a celebrity diner there on my stay (Greg Wallace) staff are very helpful, yes parking isn't the best but you must take into consideration when this hotel was built .... Rooms do let this hotel down and I do hope now that the owner has bought (The Grosvenor) that funding on refurbishment doesn't get cut .... Something I've also noticed through reading through trip advisor reviews that clientele who attend (The Grosvenor) and complain about their stay are sent to The Grand which is a bit disconcerting ... Be mindful Mr Keith Richardson.

This is apparently one of the oldest hotels in Torquay and in some aspects it shows. The upside of its age though is that it has a brilliant position overlooking Torbay. The lobby and whole downstairs area has obviously been recently refurbished and is as plush as you would expect from a luxury 4 star venue. The Compass Bar with its large windows overlooking the bay is a wonderful place to have a pre dinner relaxing drink. Unfortunately once you get upstairs to the rooms everything begins to look and feel a little dated. Our room was a nice size with balcony overlooking the sea. However the floorboards were incredibly uneven and the walls must have been paper thin because we could hear a lot of noise from the rooms around us which disturbed our sleep on occasion. The patio doors leading to the balcony were old and simply did not lock at all which is a security issue even being a couple of floors up. A further annoyance was the temperature of the rooms which always seemed to be too hot no matter whether the radiators were on or not. We ended up sleeping with no bedding at all and it was mid April.

We ate in the restaurant and it was above average a la carte food. Good service too. Breakfast was fairly high quality with the usual continental and cooked options although the service let us down on one occasion.

The leisure facilities which include a smallish but well equipped gym, 15m pool, sauna, and whirlpool were nice and i used these facilities on a few occasions. My 3 yr old son used the pool and loved it.

In summary this hotel is maybe surviving on its former glories and improvements could be made in a number of areas. Despite this i would probably return because the few negatives are outweighed by the many positives.

I havent been to the hotel yet but already had a bad experience.
We recently had a baby and have been very busy. So we decided to have a relaxed May bank holiday weekend. We looked for hotels that have a good spa and treatments. We booked the Grand Hotel, Torquay after speaking to the hotel and confirming about the spa and treatments.
Now 3 days before the holiday, I got a call from the hotel asking for an upgrade to a sea view room for 45 quid/ 3 nights. I took the upgrade and asked them about the process to book the spa. They replied that the spa treatments were stopped 3 days ago. Very disappointed because I booked the hotel after confirming that.
I then looked on the hotel website, only to find that the upgrade to the sea view rooms was available for an extra 15 quid for 3 nights.
So now I have paid them 30 pounds extra, and also dont have the spa treatments which were present when I booked.
Spoke to the hotel reception. They were polite but I felt let down.
I wouldnt go back to the hotel because I would like customers to be valued, not mis sold.

We have been going to the Grand for quite sometime now, and we find its a lovely hotel to relax in at anytime of the day. We go for the odd drink or two, and sometmes we eat, sandwiches etc, always very good value, really good value for money. Just lately we have been having off the tapas menue, it starts at 5pm, what excellent value, choice, and they are delicious. There is also an offer on wine, after 5pm, so all round very good value indeed. The views are to die for, you can see the whole of the bay from the lounge, and the lounge restaurant. A really lovely experience, in a fabulous hotel setting, what more could you want, thank you Grand Hotel.

What a fabulous hotel!! We have stayed in 4* hotels all over the world but never one that catered to the guest as much as The Grand. The staff were the most efficient, professional and friendly we have ever encountered. Although we only stayed here for two nights we wish it could have been longer and we will DEFINITELY be back in the not too distant future.

Room Tip: Would recommend paying the little extra for a sea view room.

Fine hotel. Excellent sea view from terrace and dining room. Wonderful atmosphere. Staff very friendly. Rooms and bathrooms ok. Stayed at the grand in March, were happy about the warm welcome. were looking for a good hotel for our group of German seniors in September this year. They are going to have a lot of fun and will enjoy the fine lobby bar and sea terrace.
