“New manager & New Chef”
Reviewed 27 May 2013 via mobile

Stayed with friends over the bank holiday weekend. The hotel was busy but everything was tip top. My room 410 was spotless - dinner was faultless and the service in the bar lounge by Victoria outstanding. Would not hesitate to recommend this traditional seafront hotel where the new manager and chef are already making noticeable changes

We stayed for 2 nights last week in a sea view room which is definately worth paying the extra for.
The room itself was looking rather tatty round the edges, but had everything you need with nice toiletries in the clean and tidy bathroom. The shower was good and we had no issues with hot water.
The thing we love about this hotel is the fantastic food in the Gainsborough restaurant. We have stayed before and have always been impressed with the quality and variety, this along with the fabulous and friendly service means we will stay again. Breakfast was good (bacon excellent, sausage average!)
The compass lounge is as good as it gets with the great views and very efficient staff, the perfect place for coffee or cocktails, or both :) Try the sandwiches, they are enormous and lovely fresh handcut bread.
The indoor pool was lovely and warm and very quiet, infact we had it to ourselves both days. My one complaint is about the tiles around the pool, they are very very slippery and really do need replacing, they have put plastic matting here and there but not adequate I'm afraid. The changing rooms and entrance to the outdoor pool also needs a revamp.
The Grand is looking tired in places but the public areas are very stylish and the staff are a credit to the hotel.
We look forward to returning and recommending.

We have just returned from a very enjoyable spring weekend break at this hotel.
The customer service was excellent, all of the staff were extremely friendly, attentive and efficient. The decor throughout the hotel was maintained to a very high standard and the rooms were very comfortable.
For overall quality of food, service and comfort you would be hard pressed to find anything better in terms of value for money and we would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Stayed at the grand for a couple of nights whilst in the area visiting customers. Yes, the hotel is looking a little thread worn in places and could do with a spruce up. (Blankets on the bed in this century ?) However, at £60 per night I thought it was good value and worth the money. The staff were extremely considerate and attentive. Breakfast was good but not outstanding. Ie the fruit salad was tired, but for the money I thought it was all good value. The gym area really has passed its sell by date but the pool is fantastic and makes up for the dodgy equipment in the gym. And let's be honest about it, you have the option of a lovely walk by the sea so why play on a life cycle or running machine ?

Had dinner on the first night in the bar area. it was all well cooked and the home made ice cream is in a class of its own. The steak was superb, although at over £2 per accompanying sauce you would expect more than a thimble full. This really is my only criticism.

Finally, coffee and cakes mid morning in the bar are too die for and worth blowing the diet on.

I am happy to recommend and would stay again.

flew in from the USA traveling in the SW, we stopped at the coasal town of Torquay and after reading the reviews on this hotel we gave it a shot.
No regrets on that choice at all, they wished my wife a happy American Mothers day and even gave her a card in the room with Chocolate Strawberries. the room was very comfortable with a unique way of enjoying tha balcony. You have to open the very large Victorian windows and climb out. LOL. Well worth the excellent sea view.

We also sampled the Restuarant which the menu choice was outstanding, food taste and quality second to non and with all local produce available.
Perfect place top stay.

Room Tip: get a Sea View

Stayed in the Grand Hotel for five nights whilst attending a convention. Excellent facilities and a comfortable room - if a little short on wardrobe space. The bathroom was in very good nick and very clean but there was a lamentable lack of shelf space for make up (my wife's!), toothbrushes, toothpaste, shaver (mine!) and all the other bits and pieces that you might expect to be able to unpack and leave out for a stay of 5 nights.

I never thought that I would say this about the desirability of a sea view because I think that if the weather's good you want to be outside not looking at it through a window - however good the room might be. However it was really horrible throwing open the curtains in the morning to a view of one of the hotel's exterior walls just a very few feet away. We were able to see what a difference a sea view made when we visited friends in their room across the corridor. Our rooms were very similar but the brightness of our friends' room was so much more welcoming.

We didn't take dinner in the hotel although we had breakfast everyday and lunch most days. Our thoughts were that the food was good but seemed to lack that little bit extra but friends who did experience the restaurant for dinner said that they were very happy with the quality.

This hotel is recommended for its location (sufficiently far away from the centre of Torquay to be quiet but within easy walking distance or a very short bus ride), facilities and extremely helpful staff. However it misses that extra green dot because of the dreadful 'view'.

Room Tip: If, like me, you don't yearn for a sea view but would nevertheless prefer not to be looking into...

We chose this hotel from the many others in the Torbay area due to a special offer price online. The discount price was for an inland double room and the rate was lower than most B&Bs in the area. The reviews were generally good that we had read on Trip Advisor. Our one night stay was great !! We checked in and were greeted by very friendly staff. The hotel restaurant had a private function so we ate in the bar bistro area which had great views over Torbay and Torquay area .. The room was spacious and clean, but a little dated, but that actually added to the charm factor and didn't bother us. Evening dinner and breakfast was excellent. We had the pleasure of a Saturday night cabaret act - Pink Sinatra - a "Frankie" tribute act who was excellent entertainment. The one big plus for this hotel though is the high standard of service by ALL of the staff we met - this really made our stay and we would definately recommend this hotel and we will return. If you have an afternoon free - then follow our recommendation to go and visit Greenway House near Brixham - and take the 1930s bus from the town. This was Agatha Christie's summer holiday home and we had a marvellous day there..

Room Tip: You'll pay a lot for a sea view, but you wont need t sit in your room and look at the sea. You g...
