“sandwich rip-off”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

stayed at this hotel a couple of times in the past & quite satisfied. Staying elsewhere in Torquay the wife & I decided to call in the Grand for a drink & some food, after a long walk.We looked at the bar menu & couldn,t believe the prices. We were starving so we ordered two beef sandwiches that came with a small pot of crisps each. They cost £8 Each, and weren,t anything special. Our fault for ordering such overpriced food.

Hotel is good rooms good but the restaurant service is bad.we stayed after the bank holiday and the hotel was not even half full but we waited over 20 minutes for the starter and nearly half an hour for the main course to arrive. I would hate to stay here when it is busy

Service over the Bank Holiday was excruciatingly slow! It seemed as though no extra waiters/waitresses had been employed for this weekend and, with the addition of a wedding party there too, we ended up having to order another round of drinks as soon as the last round arrived, to ensure we didn't have yet another half hour wait for the drinks to appear! They also ran out of toilet paper in all of the loos before the end of the evening. Grrr!

Main lounge OK and of course, the location is wonderful, but rooms still grotty, with smelly mould in the bathrooms, still needing refurbishment! Not living up to its name, that's for sure! The Grand, Torquay still needs lots more money thrown at it - and a lot more staff!

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else!

We decided on a last minute mini break to Devon and picked the Grand hotel on the reviews from Trip advisor. The location of the hotel is very good, only a short walk from the sea from, restaurants, bars etc. I think the hotel is generally nice but could do with some updating and a lick of paint.
The spa/pool area definitely needs updating and a good clean. The rooms itself were generally nice, we didn't have a good view but that was our own doing by not booking a sea view. Very comfy bed with nice sheets. The bathroom was large but the shower cubicle was tiny.
The breakfast and breakfast room was very nice, although be prepared to wait at busy times - the hotel does inform you of this.

We visited the grand for an Easter weekend break. It is in a good location with very pleasant staff. Our room was lovely, refurbished, spacious and clean with a nice sea view. Now for the huge flaw ... the restaurant. On the fist morning we waited in the corridor for 35 mins to go into breakfast, 15 minutes on the second morning (on this morning we were shown to two different tables that were already occupied and had to go back to the queue!). Once inside it was chaotic - loads of uncleared tables, very few staff and worst of all the long wait for breakfast trays to be filled up. On one morning we were told that the bacon had run out but they managed to find a bit more from somewhere, the hash browns had also run out and were replaced with thin chips (for breakfast!). Croissants were advertised but I only saw some on the table on our final day. Everything seemed to be in either short supply or no supply at all. Evening meals were also an issue. The menu itself is extremely limited - 2 fish dishes, 2 meat dishes and steak that you pay extra for and on two of the evenings some of my choices were unavailable so I struggled to find something I liked. Service is also pretty slow. I will say however that once the food arrived it was tasty but could have been a little warmer and more plentiful in the case of my husband who had to order extra vegetables to supplement his meal. I must just mention one of the restaurant serving staff, Oliver, who was a star and really put in the extra effort to help us. In conclusion this hotel could be so good if the restaurant was run properly, until then visitors will come away unsatisfied.

Room Tip: Ask for a refurbished room, preferably with a sea view.

This is an ex GWR hotel with period charm, although with many contemporary features, including indoor and outdoor pool, sauna and bars with great service from friendly staff. We had a room with a sea view and the hotel provides a goody bag for the dog. A lovely short stay. Recommended.
