This time we stayed at the Toorak which is in the same vacinity as the Derwent and belong to the same company.
This hotel cannot be faulted, the staff are all very helpful and friendly and go out of the way to help everyone. This was our 2nd visit to this hotel and will certainly stay at it again. It is very clean and tidy, rooms are excellent.

I just returned from a 2 night break at the Toorak and would like to say that we enjoyed it very much. The room was spacious, the staff were friendly and helpful, the location and facilities were great. I would definitely visit again.

Check in was easy and reception staff efficient and friendly. Our room was on the first floor and, whilst there is a lft, we opted for the stairs. We were in a front facing room which had a very small sea view overlooking a car park but there was no noise disturbance and, overall, it was a peaceful area. The room itself could not be faulted. Yes, the rooms are quite traditional but if you want ultra modern with no atmosphere then stay elsewhere. The decor was pleasant, it was spacious and everything was spotless. Plenty of wardrobe space, the usual tea/coffee etc and the bathroom did everything a bathroom should and that was absolutely spotless too. Management and housekeeping clearly work well together to ensure a very high standard is maintained. All public areas were equally as clean.
The Toorak is part of a group of 4 hotels and you can reach any of them without getting wet through various corridors. We had a good look at all of them and, whilst it is obvious that certain standards are adhered to throughout the TLH site, in our opinion, the Toorak has the edge on the rest. It also appeared to be the quietest as it is furthest away from the Starlight Lounge and Aztec area which is brilliant because you can have the hustle and bustle when you want and then retire back to the Toorak for peace and quiet. Whilst we did not use them there were a couple of very relaxing looking rooms to sit and read or just switch off and enjoy the peace.
Talking of he Starlight, we ventured there on the Thursday night and found ourselves very amused by the entertainment. A chap by the name of Kevin (KB Sounds?) was on good form and we ended up joining in and staying until the end. We would happily see him again but is he too good to stay with TLH for much longer?.................! Paid another visit on the Friday night and the entertainment was very different. There did not appear to be much of an atmosphere and what was on was not to our taste, we are not saying it was bad, just not for us. Maybe we expected too much after such a good Thursday.
We didn't make use of the pool and spa facilities but have to say they looked clean and welcoming.
We don't really want to come to this part but have to in order to offer an honest review - the food: It was dreadful. The restaurant itself and the tables are pristine and look very inviting, as does the menu but that is where the positives stop.
First night:
Starter - one waldorf type salad - tasted of nothing, literally. One terrine, cheap, nasty, plastic and tasteless.
Main - two sirlion steaks. Described as sirloin but we're not convinced. They did not look appetising and one was left after two VERY chewy mouthfulls (and that was the medium rare!!). Veg was neither nice nor nasty, just tasteless and watery.
Pudding: One strawberry cheesecake - a horrible cardboard taste with the gelatine 'strawberry' topping - I eat anything sweet but I had to leave this it was so bad. One cheese plate: 5 small biscuits and 3 pieces of tastless cheese, far too cold to taste any potential flavour.
Second night:
Starter: One chicken pate with a speciality bread. Bread was totally dry and pate was again tasteless. One tomato soup: it tasted of powder, enough said.
Main: One beef casserole type dish with roast potato - the memory makes me shudder. Whilst the meat was cooked to perfection and melt in the mouth the taste was something else - and I don't want to know what it was. Salt was the overpowering flavour and I guess that whatever they use to thicken the casserole is cheap, nasty and the ruination of a potentially lovely dish. The roast potatoes looked as though they had been left over from the previous Sunday lunch, could not eat and even have a picture of them, we have NEVER been served anything like them before. We won't post the picture on here because it's unreasonable but private mail us and we will. One pork toad in the hole type dish. Totally tastless.
Pudding: Not even going to bother, I think you get the picture.
Breakfast? Forget it. Poor sausages (rusk based?), very salty bacon, hard tomatoes, incredibly greasy, rubber fried eggs, watery, hard scrambled eggs etc, etc. Toast and coffee is brought to the table and that was fine but everything else (apart from special order food) is under a hot plate and instead of taking the time to replenish little and often, the food is sat there and therefore far from its best. They also have croissants but they are hard, cold and greasy, absolutely terrible.
To be honest, after reading some of the other reviews, we expected the food to be good and it was such a shock to discover how cheap and nasty it all was that we wonder if there was just a glitch in the system because it really was bad. In defence of the hotel, we did not complain at the time, had we have done, maybe there would have been a good explanation as we don't want to believe that such a good hotel is badly let down by the food quality.

We stayed at this hotel at the end of May 2011 for two days on a dinner/bed/breakfast basis. It is one of four hotels on this quiet road in the THL Leisure Resort Group. Our room was clean and comfortable with plenty of space for luggage and a sitting area by the window. Breakfast and dinner were freshly prepared with an excellent choice of menu. We really enjoyed being able to use the facilities of all four hotels especially in the evenings when we could have a drink before dinner and entertainment afterwards without leaving the vicinity. All in all a great few days !

The staff are now very poor from what they used to be.
The hotel looks as if it runs on a shoe string.

Once again we have returned to the Toorak and were certainly not disappointed. Staff, as usual, were extremely friendly and efficient. Our room was large and spacious. The dining room is a particular favourite of ours, very elegant. Food is first rate as is the service. We will certainly return.
