“Excellent value for money in a friendly hotel with fab facilities.”
Reviewed 9 August 2011

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay and this was our second holiday in The Toorak. The hotel is clean and the staff are friendly and the facilities are excellent for young and old alike. I have two small children, they loved the pools, play area, bowling and children's entertainment and at meal times they have a great choice of food.
The hotel is also situated right behind the gardens on the beach side of Torquay and you can walk anywhere within a few minutes.
I would highly recommend The Toorak and will be visiting again myself.

Our family 2 adults and two boys 16 and 11 got home last Saturday th Aug after a 13 night stay at TLH. It was our first time there and we were amazed by how many families come back year after year.

We stayed in the Victoria for 9 nights and the Toorak for 4 nights as we extended our initial period.

Highlights include:-

The excellent entertainments team led by Zoe H. The number of activities day and night were excellent and their own show is not to be missed. All of the team are so friendly and helpful, as are all of the staff on site.

The food at both hotels is excellent, with the Toorak being higher quality and quantity and of course higher price. In terms of accomodation both were good quality.

The main indoor swimming pool is great if you enjoy swimming - no slides I am afraid but the pool is 25m long and 10m wide meaning you can actually find space to enjoy it. In addition their was a good size second pool and an outdoor pool for the adventourous types.

Activities included family sports days, pitch and putt, walking to Cockington (a must) Zumba with an excellent teacher in Zoe B., indoor bowls training with Sarah, Tennis coaching by an ex county player, snooker, pool, ten pin bowling, table tennis, Wii and Connect, family rounders, Yoga, Family Water Polo, Scuba Diving, Aqua jets.

Some of the above activities are paid for but all are at a reasonable cost.

Evening entertainment included the team show as mentioned above a must see, outside entertainers of varying standards but all were good fun, outdoor entertainment one night, Race nights, Bingo and late night discos.

As you can see we were always kept busy but did find time for a massage and facial and the occassional sit down around the pool.

Overall a great place to stay for families of any ages as there is so much to do

We have stayed here as a family many times over the last 10 years and enjoyed several of the "superior" family rooms, the best are those with large bay windows with a view over the bay. I would agree with other reviews in that most bathrooms are a little small & dated but the general decor is OK. In more recent years we have noticed a detrioration in some of the general maintenance(peeling paint in some areas including the hotel frontage, lights not working in the Aztec pool, underfloor heating in pool changing rooms not working casuing excessivley wet floors and broken lockers) and the restaurant staff are now variable in demenour but were pleased to see many improvements during our last visit. (Outdoor pools now fenced, for example).
The choice of food for dinner in the Toorak restaurant is a little limited but there always appears to be lashing of sausages & chicken nuggets for the children. Breakfast is self-service, including the "Full English",which is nicely cooked and well presented.
Not a top-notch hotel but not a top-notch price. Would recommend for a couple of nights with children.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review following your stay with us. We are in a programme of bathroom refurbishment currently and are making progress in getting all up to a top standard. The hotel frontage was damaged due to the severe winter weather. We have now done most of this work and will finish in September. We did not want to have scaffolding up during the main summer period. I have passed on your comments to our Aztec manager who looks after the indoor pool area to look at the points that you raise. We are members of Taste of the West and our chef sources the best of local ingredients. We do normally get highly rated for our food offering, We also offer some healthy options for children's dining along side sausages and chicken nuggets to give a good choice for children..
I am glad to see that generally you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you back again soon

We went to the Toorak Hotel as a party of ten covering three generations. The purpose was for a family birthday, and the experience was perfect. Staff were great, the food excellent and the accomodation just right.

Room Tip: Terrace rooms are brilliant, and Riviera front rooms great for families.

I wanted somewhere to spend my birthday weekend with my 14 year old niece & husband and as the weather forcast wasn't great we thought the Toorak sounded a good idea. We weren't disappointed the facilities were very good. You can walk between all the hotels and I think the swimming pool area is the best I've seen for a hotel pool. Our family room was a lovely size but the bathroom was a bit dated (but hey did that spoil things???). What impressed us was the service for dinner. There was a reasonable selection for the al a carte and a child's menu. We asked what our niece had to choose from and they replied she can have whatever she likes. There was also a buffet for the kids and they did her a lovely side salad as she didn't want chips. The entertainment was OK but I think you'd be wise to find out what things were on as they do a lot of special weekend things like dancing, bowls etc. Breakfast was fine, not the best I've ever had but those that complain must be very fussy.
If I had to make a negative comment it would be that there was quite a bit of traffic noise from our room and also it's a little way to walk to the main centre of Torquay. In summary, we enjoyed it and we are certainly going to keep an eye on their website for what's on in the future.

Stayed with a group of friends for a couple of nights. The hotel is in a great location with good facilities. Especially enjoyed the pool areas (inside and out). Food was good - great for the money on a HB rate. We have stayed in this complex a number of years ago and it looks as if nothing had changed that much - the whole place really needs updating. It is getting tatty around the edges and our room was like something left over from the 70's. The bathroom in particular looked very, very tired. In summary, cheap, cheerful and good value if you are on a budget and want to chance it with the Blue Rinse Brigade. If you are looking for a bit of luxury, this is not the place for you.

This time we stayed at the Toorak which is in the same vacinity as the Derwent and belong to the same company.
This hotel cannot be faulted, the staff are all very helpful and friendly and go out of the way to help everyone. This was our 2nd visit to this hotel and will certainly stay at it again. It is very clean and tidy, rooms are excellent.
