“Christmas & New Year”
Reviewed 9 January 2012

We have stayed previously at the Palace four times for Christmas but this year also included New Year with friends. Many of the rooms have been refurbished and are lovely- as our friends said "For a hotel bedroom this is good as it gets". Our room, which we have had three times previously is "tired" but due for refurbishent soon. The atmosphere is so friendly as soon as you walk through the door and all the staff could not be more pleasant and helpful. The food is always gorgeous but the festive meals exceptional. The only problem is that after a huge breakfast there is, over Christmas, a large lunch, afternoon tea with lovely cakes followed by a four course dinner that it is difficult to find enough room to do it all justice! Christmas was an outstanding time but New Year was also excellent - the best we have ever had for food, entertainment, attention and organisation and we had a truly exceptional time. The hotel was beautifully decorated, piano during meals, handbell ringers, a table magician etc. Our friends - very frequent "cruisers" said their time was quite as good as being on a top grade cruise. From talking to many people all say the Palace is now easily the best hotel in Torquay.
We, and two lots of our friends have booked for next Christmas and New Year but we are very likely to go at least once during the year in addition!

Room Tip: Suites on the garden side are excellent but quite expensive. Rooms not overlooking garden can be per...

I've just spent yet another 3 days here and love it ......for several reasons particularly for it's unusual 'quirkiness'. You can almost feel the history and the original photos are there for all to see. The staff are excellent. The food is great. Plenty of facilities. The gardens are beautiful. Walks are great. It's only a short walk to the beach.

We stayed at this hotel along with friends in November, the reception was very beautiful with the Xmas decorations the staff were extremely helpful and couldn't do enough. Our room was more than adequate with a fantastic view over the gardens and golf coarse. The food was exceptional every mouthful a delight all four coarses! The was a very relaxed and homely feel and we will all be returning in the spring.

I treated my husband to a five day break at the Palace, they had a special deal on for three days with Dinner, Bed and Breakfast, so it was good value for money. We originally booked a standard twin room, but got upgraded to a garden room. The room was very big and the two beds were very comfortable. The bathroom was very bright which made a very pleasant change from some of the dark bathrooms we have had in the past at other hotels. Dinner and Breakfast was very good as usual. Very wide choice of cereals, fruits, yogurts, along with a good variety of hot food on offer. The evening meal was very, very good, with big portions and because we went near Christmas they had their decorations up and the whole hotel looked lovely. It was a very nice quiet break for us. I know some of the reviews on tripadvisor state that the rooms are 'tired', but the room we had number 342 was lovely. We are thinking of going back there again in January for another little break.

My wife and I have just returned from a three day break at the Palace Hotel (where we have stayed on a number of occasions in the past). Whilst it could never be claimed that the standard of the rooms is wonderful (they are somewhat dated) there is nothing wrong with them; they are very clean and tidy and the bed is comfortable.

Where the hotel scores highly is in terms of its facilities (excellent swimming pool, indoor and outdoor tennis courts [which are of an extremely high standard], snooker room, squash courts, 9 hole pitch and putt, croquet and putting greens, a very pleasant lounge, writing room and separate TV room [all Sky Channels provided]) and, most particularly, the staff and quality of food.

Without exception, the staff are very friendly, helpful and all seem to really enjoy working at the hotel; in many hotels of this size one is often left with the impression that you are just another faceless individual but this is certainly not the case at the Palace.

The food is of a very high standard, well presented and with a good selection to choose from.

Our room was a bit chilly (for some reason the central heating didn't seem to be pumping through as well as it should have done) but a word with the receptionist resulted in an immediate delivery of a heater which more than compensated.

Just down from the hotel is the coastal path which offers a very nice walk and which is not too taxing (the one in the direction towards Torquay is better than the one towards Babbacombe). Torquay centre is about a 15 minute walk away although it is a bit uphill on the way back!

Some of the deals that the hotel offers from time to time provide excellent value for money - some of which need to be seen to be believed; if you see one of those deals don't be put off by thinking that you don't get something for nothing - go for it, because you won't be disappointed.

I have awarded a Very Good rating rather than Excellent one but only because the room standard is not as high as it might be although, as indicated above, there was nothing fundamentally wrong with it (on reflection, given the extremely good value for money rating I might have been a bit mean in not allocating a top overall rating).

Room Tip: The Garden Rooms have a good outlook - albeit in the winter months there isn't too much opportun...

Over the last 9 years my family and I have enjoyed many (at least a dozen) 2 or 3 night stays at The Palace Hotel, usually taking advantage of special rate deals during half-term or other school holidays.

Why do we keep coming back?

Facilities – we love the range of activities available at the hotel and how easily accessible they are (more so than at some places that specifically advertise themselves for activity holidays).
On several visits I’ve simply parked the car, off-loaded all the clothes and equipment and haven’t left the hotel grounds for the duration of the stay. The 9-hole golf course is great fun for beginners and keen golfers alike (my h’cap is 11 and I find the course enjoyable and challenging). The tennis courts are usually available at short notice and are of a good standard (although the outdoor courts can get mossy towards autumn and the roof of the indoor courts does leak a bit in very heavy rain). The swimming pools and changing areas are well maintained (I’d recommend goggles for the indoor pool if your eyes are sensitive to chlorine). The two full size snooker tables are also in decent condition and are usually available on request, as is the table-tennis table. We don’t play squash, but the courts appear to also be of a good standard.

Food – the quality is excellent and, if anything, has improved over the last 9 years. We opt for half-board and the breakfast is generous enough to keep most people going (perhaps with a snack or two) until the delicious four course dinner. We never minded the collar and tie dress code, but I know that quite a few friends are happy this has been relaxed to smart/casual. Snack food is available throughout the day in various lounges. It’s a little more expensive (as are the drinks) than it would be off-site, but balanced with the free facilities and the value of the half-board rate, a pound or two here and there doesn’t feel like a rip-off!

Service – We’ve got to know quite a few of the staff over the years and the service has always been excellent. Bar staff are willing to bring drinks to the snooker room (and it’s a fair old walk with a tray of drinks) and everyone is helpful without being intrusive.

Value for money – We think that the half-board, mini-break deals represent outstanding value for money, especially if you are able to take full advantage of the facilities.

What’s not so great:

Some rooms & corridor carpets are looking a bit tired and could do with refurbishment. Bathrooms are clean and functional, but wouldn’t really be classed as luxurious. The special rate deals usually only apply to car park facing rooms. Compared with the garden facing rooms, the views are pretty uninspiring, but it’s hard to justify the premium of £10 per person per day when the children don’t really care! We have been upgraded once, but I wouldn’t count on it…..

Room Tip: Garden rooms do have lovely views, but come at a premium of £10 per person per night.

We have just come back from a "3 night for the price of 2" stay. We had booked a room with no garden view as it would have added £60 extra to the £236 price for the two of us. When we opened the door of our room - 241 - we found a garden view. Our room was very large and the ensuite bathroom was fine, though it could have done with a new shower screen. It was great watching the golfers and people playing croquet from the bedroom window.
We had the evening meal on two nights and the food was great. Coffee in th lounge afterwards was very civilised. On one night we went to Kent's Cavern to see Romeo and Juliet and were allowed to change our meal to an earlier one from the Terrace Menu.
All the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you. We hope to return.
Don't understand some of the comments. Did the reviewers stay in a different hotel?
