“A touch of the old school”
Reviewed 12 November 2012

The Palace is an ideal hotel for all ages. It has a genteel atmosphere in the lounges for those who want some relaxation, peace and quiet, combined with a good range of facilities for younger folk. Table tennis, pool, swimming and tennis are on offer.

The food is excellent value. 4 course evening meals are of a very good standard as is the breakfast, offering full English as well as lighter bites and porridge.

The downside is a lack of a proper wet room for disabled visitors. The so-called walk in shower is actually just a shower tray. Disappointing.

Staff are friendly and the whole atmosphere of the hotel is relaxing.

Room Tip: Rooms with garden views are more expensive, but are worth it.

We took advantage of an offer of three nights for two with the addition of dinner each evening. We can only praise what was on offer. The Table d'Hote alone was priced at £29 and the breakfast was magnificent equalling anything found on a cruise ship.
Ample parking space, good service, considerable choice at dinner and breakfast and faultless accommodation.
You must visit Buckfast Abbey and don't miss the Doyle Carte country seat.

This was our third stay at this very special hotel. It has a wonderful dining room with super breakfasts and dinners (second to none). The lounges are very luxurious, and the service in all areas is very good.
Sadly one can't say that of all of the bedrooms, we had room 206 which was very cold and also smallish with very little wardrobe space for two, we had paid extra for garden room, so expected a better room than this. The palace also still has blankets on beds ! Wifi is almost non-existent, except in very localised areas near reception. There is a lot that is brilliant about hotel and grounds, just let down by some the bedrooms.

Room Tip: This is trial and error. Some of the Garden view rooms are good, as are some of those on front of h...

Delightful buildings with character. Wonderful grounds with lovely wooded walks. Enjoyed the 9-hole par 3 golf course, indoor tennis courts, snooker table, table-tennis table. Large, comfortable, nicely decorated rooms. Nice walk down to a pretty beach. Breakfast fantastic - loads of choice and good quality produce. Dinner average but nice atmosphere in dining room with live music played on the grand piano. Nice lounges.

Large traditional hotel. Lovely, spacious & tranquil lounge areas, serving freshly made scones with Devon trimmings. We had 3 for 2 half board deal, which was good value, evening meal quality was excellent. This is not modern chic, more Miss Marple, depends what you're after! Worth paying supplement for garden view, immaculately kept grounds & 9 hole golf course. Indoor pool was on the cold side & could do with some tlc. overall great if you want a short break with lovely and good service.

As a couple in our 20's, this sort of hotel is not specifically tailored to us, but we find ourselves coming back again and again for the following reasons:

Expanse of leisure facilities which are all FREE to use for guests
Quality of food
Luxury atmosphere

Also there is free parking for guests and the location is excellent.

We will continue to come back.

This is a highly regarded hotel locally and I was looking forward to a sunday lunch here but sadly I can think of no reason to recommend it. As a starter my wife ordered gravadlax and got smoked salmon adulterated by only a couple of capers. My starter was pressed ham terrine without much flavour garnished with dark and withered cress(?), now where had that been and for how long? Mains were served on plates only just above ambient and were cold before the vegetables were served. My wife said her fish was both overcooked and cold-an unhappy combination-and the sauce was bland. My 28day sirloin was chewy and tasteless in the English tradition. The warm apricot and almond dessert had some nice apricots but the pastry was soggy and 'warm' was an exaggeration. The wine waiter never appeared, nor did any management figure. Had this been a three star hotel I might given three stars for an average meal, but a four star hotel deserves only two.
