Just taken a coach full to the Palace Hotel , the Esponade, Paignton and it is as good as it gets. Brilliant foor, great service, really good rooms with plenty of space, spotless throughout. All the staff are really pleasant especially the dining room group.
Swimming pool also spotless and warm and run well.
Well stocked well run bar. Beautiful sitting rooms, comfortable seating, lovely welcoming fires.
Hotel is easy reach of buses and train.

Room Tip: There aren't any bad rooms just ones that look over the water and some that dont but the rooms...

Let's start by stating we took advantage of the seasonal £69 pppn DB&B offer with third night free if you stay for 2. To save you the maths, that's £46 per night for Dinner Bed and Breakfast, in a 4 star hotel.

It was for a friends extended 'special' birthday party so perhaps our stay was not typical, but many things were very good by any standard, and at this price ridiculously so. Service was always friendly and efficient. Breakfast was everything you could reasonably want. Lots of fruit, delicious breads, lovely 'home cooked' thick ham, cold and hot buffet. However, the decaff coffee was very poor, and I was told the regular wasn't too good either.

The dinner on the first night was reasonable, and on the next two nights very good. We are talking about starter, soup/consomme, main course, dessert all included in the price.

The public areas are in the grand hotel style, very spacious. As other reviews have noted, the bedrooms are not great, or ours wasn't at any rate. While it had everything you basically needed, the bed was not very comfortable, the over-bath shower was erratic and cramped, the hair-dryer not very effective, and the radio only received Radio 4. the small TV worked OK. The bath towels were large and good quality and reasonable toiletries were provided. Toilet paper was excellent quality (important!) and toilet flushed efficiently (also important!). The only power-socket was under the dressing table, so you couldn't have a pone next to the bed and on charge, say. Wifi worked most of the time in some downstairs public areas, but not in bedrooms.

Room cleaning wasn't fantastic. you could write your initials in the layer of dust at the edge of the wooden step between bedroom and bathroom. Many hotels now seem to leave the edges of rooms uncleaned, presumably because vacuum cleaners don't readily do these areas, but a wooden step?

Hotel facilities included swimming pool, indoor tennis courts, extensive grounds, with access to the coast path, and large and comfortable lounges with newspapers to read.

Although, in the interests of accuracy, I have identified some drawbacks, at this price I would certainly stay here again. If I was paying double, I'd probably look elsewhere. But maybe we should have paid a little more for a superior room.

This was the fifth time we have stayed for Christmas and second time stayed on for the New Year as well. Christmas was fantastic with excellent food, superb service and entertainment. Some staff have changed but uphold the tradition of friendliness and service whilst the familiar staff give of their best as ever. New Year with friends who came to join us was even better than usual, champagne reception, excellent dinner with table magician, followed by first class entertainment until after New Year. Time went far too quickly! More food than one can eat was persistent throughout stay;the standard of food was very good throughout;the attention and care given by staff was outstanding, as usual; our rooms have been upgraded and requests had been carefully attended to.We have also stayed at other times and everything is just the same whenever one stays there - welcome, attention from staff, standard of food etc always excellent! Easily the best hotel in Torquay.!
Some people complain about the rooms. Most of them have been refurbished and are fine but one needs to remember this is an old building which is what gives it much of it's charm which it undoubtedly has. The ambience of the hotel and it's gardens with the golf course, its two swimming pools etc, plus quality of staff and food are what makes it rather unique!

Room Tip: Ask for one that has been refurbished as most has nowadays

we stayed at the Palace over New Year, and it was fantastic, the food was excellent, lobster thermidor on the menu New Years Eve, no supplement, and the best I have ever tasted. Entertainment on all 3 nights first class. The staff are welcoming, professional and extremely helpful. We had heard that the New Years Eve stay was suburb and were not disappointed. Have stayed at the Palace before taking advantage of their out of season breaks and always find these to be first class and extremely good value. Cannot speak highly enough of the standard that this hotel aspires to and reaches.

Room Tip: the garden facing rooms are spacious, and well maintained,.

I took my mother for a few days towards the end of November as a treat for her 90th birthday. The room was clean and smart and en suite facilities fine. The restaurant was the highlight, along with the wonderful Christmas decorations. Such a lot of effort was made to ensure my mother's disabled requirements were met, and all the staff were welcoming and professional. A candle for her to make a wish was put on her desert for her birthday and a fuss was made of her. Delicious and well presented meals both in the restaurant and for room service. I have had several trips to this hotel over the years, and although the first room I ever had was "tired" in its decor, I find now that the rooms, this year and last year in particular, have been comfortable, nicely decorated and clean. The grounds looked superbly cared for, as always. The decor matters, especially when the weather is so poor! I can see why some people might feel it is a bit too "old world" for them, but it is all down to personal preference, and I feel at home there, especially seeing continuity of staff.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter generally, although the front is well off the road edge anyway.

My wife and I stayed at the Palace in the early part of December. We took advantage of their 3 nights for the price of 2 offer - dinner, bed and breakfast. Well, I have to say we were very impressed with the quality of the hotel, its comfort, its service and the food. The hotel sits in extensive grounds which though we were in the depths of winter were imaculate. The staff were attentive and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The public areas were very comfortable and being Christmas - tastefully decorated. The indoor facilities were excellent - we used the small pool, the sauna and had a protracted game of snooker! Its a pleasure to stay in a hotel where you are a guest rather than just a room number!

Room Tip: Book a garden facing room if possible
