“Food delicious, hotel stinks and more suited to older clientele”
Reviewed 4 May 2014 via mobile

First of all I must start by saying that food was delicious and staff were very friendly, a complete mix of old and young and would win a medal for diversity. However, corridors and downstairs toilets stink of damp. Most rooms are in need of a complete renovation. Swimming pool is more of a sitting pool than a swimming pool (very small).

wife and I stayed April this year we found the staff mostly cheerful and friendly. The restaurant is fine and the food I coudnt fault. A bit downhill after that though, everything seemed in need of a complete refurbishment the bed in our room was the most uncomfortable one I can remember
sleeping in,the plumbing in the bathroom is antiquated the shower was impossible to use and the wc flushed when it wanted to.

We were group of 30 people who were promised rooms to be available from 12pm on the Saturday due to an event that we were to attend in Torquay but the rooms weren't available until gone 2pm! When the 'receptionist was questioned her attitude was take it or leave it! Due to otherwise being engaged with a football team who were staying there ( bearing in mind they should have vacated their rooms by 11am that morning!) But were still in them that's why we couldn't get in ours because the staff didn't ask them to leave as the young female staff were too interested in the footballers! When we eventually got In our room there was dried in sick on the carpet! The bathroom was very dated and the toilet roll holder was rusty and disgusting! the lounge furniture was filthy dirty, when I sat down in the lounge, my beige cardigan was marked with a black mark. When i mentioned to the manager he tried saying that it was my shoe polish, bearing in mind it was black and I wore brown shoes ! And then he walked off! The wardrobe doors were very loose so you couldn't use it! The only good thing about this hotel was the breakfast! As you can guess I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone! And our group will not be using it again !

Stayed for a couple of nights in August, the photos make this hotel look grand and I could imagine 50 years ago it was.
The staff are very nice and polite.
The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in.. can imagine that it is 50 years old too.
The bedroom needs to be updated I am surprised everything in it still worked.
Lovely breakfast.
Would not come back again...ever.

Elegant surroundings. Lovely food and service. Rooms overlooking the garden are lovely. Pity it is so far from Torquay for non car drivers, but buses do stop outside the hotel so it is not too inconvenient. Would definitely recommend.

We have stayed here half a dozen times and will return when we get the chance.

The common areas down stairs and really elegant and classy. The bedrooms are pleasant but not elaborate.

The food is really outstanding and plentiful and the excellent service is very respectful yet friendly.

Room Tip: The garden views are really pleasant.

OK, so if you want the latest high fashion boutique hotel stop reading this right now. If you want the best stay on the English Riviera or probably anywhere in the UK you better get there quick. Like the vast majority of their guests we have been repeat business over the last 30 years on a regular basis so it's a good job you all don't know how good it is. All the garden facing rooms enjoy a great view over the gardens and short gold course and some on the 3rd floor sneak views of the sea. The swimming poole is big and warm, the public rooms are great and from a gloroius past and most of the rooms are comfortable and up to modern standard. Even if some are showing their age in terms of style and furniture they are all spotlessly clean and for today's hotel standards superbly big. Then, there's the best kept secret of the Palace Hotel dining experience. The menu is traditional English with fantastic value for 4 courses if you book Dinner B & B tariff. And top choice if the sun is out is ordering one of their fantastic lunch treats (my favourite is the club sandwich) and eating out on the gloriously south facing terrace along the front of the hotel. And the short course gold is unique to us - no golfing snobbery or etiquette is required - just have some fun and try your luck. Both our sons have become proficient golfers on the back of their Palace Hotel training! There is an ambitious plan for refurb of the whole hotel coming shortly so get there now and enjoy a uniquely British experience before it's traditional and high standards change. And it's not only the best stay but it's also best value for money.

Room Tip: Go dinner bed & breakfast and be sure to book a garden view room. Don't forget your swimwea...
