“Rooms more 2 star than 4 Star”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 April 2010

We stayed at The Palace Hotel for the Easter break 3 nights. Good value deal, dinner bed and breakfast. The staff at the hotel are extremely helpful and attentive, the food was excellent and the service very good. The public areas of the hotel have been refurbished to a high standard, good leisure facilities including the golf and the gardens are very pleasant. However (and there always is one) the bedrooms we were allocated were very disappointing, décor was tired and dated and the bathrooms in dire need of refurbishment more 2 star than 4 star. The first room allocated was so cold we refused it and requested another. Rooms to one side, The service the good food and excellent staff more than made up for the disappointing rooms. We had an enjoyable stay and would return, but would request a brighter perhaps garden facing room. Well worth a visit!!

Back for the fourth time in five years, with extended family now 8 to 80, all well catered for, excellent service, bedrooms not overlooking the gardens are tired and the last to be updated. Food is excellent, cheese selection and garden lighting all working, nothing at all to complain about. Excellent retreat for all ages, we wander off golfing, swimming, putting, playing tennis, meet up at various points and for sunny balcony lunch. Like a loved elderly relative, take the few idiosynchrasies (dire after-dinner coffee, no duvets) and love the old world standards of helpfulness, service, willingness, politeness, tidiness and grace... so few places have such charm. Will be back!

We stayed at the Palace for a weekend break. Booked it quite late, very good deal, dinner bed and breakfast. The staff at the hotel are extremely helpful and attendtive, the food was excellent and the service very good. The hotel looks like it has been refurbed, the decoration is very good and the gardens are very pleasant. There is only one critisism that we have and that is the room decor and furniture. It is very dated and in need of a refurb. There was carpet in the bathroom and toilet and the TV was positioned very high up near the top of the wardrobe, as it was dated it was sometimes difficult to view. Even though at first the room was disappointing, the service and excellent staff and food made up for this. This was a very relaxing stay and we will definitely be returning, but shall request a different room. Well worth a visit!!

We spent 4 nights at the Palace. We were a bit concerned after reading the reviews. However on arriving we found the hotel to be outstanding. The lounges, dining room and reception rooms were beautifull, elegant rooms. We had booked the special break at hotel and were pleasantly surprised at the value for money. We had a Garden room which was comfortable with a good shower and was kept immaculate. It had a lovely view of golf course and gardens. The meals at the hotel were excellent and could not be faulted, and the staff were efficient and friendly. There was entertainment on 3 of the 4 nights, and hotel had a lovely indoor pool and sauna. they also had other amenities golf squash snooker etc. We have stayed at various hotels in Torquay and would have no hesitation in recomending this hotel and fully intend to return in future.

This is a large, traditional, elegant hotel which some might consider old-fashioned but others would find reassuringly calm and well mannered, with spacious well furnished lounges, pleasant gardens and outstanding service. The staff are professional without being overbearing - friendly and very helpful whilst maintaining the highest standards.

We chose a garden facing room as part of a very good value three night offer. The room seemed to have been renovated quite recently and was clean, bright and well equipped. Given some other comments about room standards, it may perhaps be worth checking that the room you are being allocated has been refurbished.

The communal areas (inside and out) were also immaculate and a pleasure to use. The one exception might be the indoor pool changing rooms, some parts of which could be better maintained.

We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel. Both were excellent. Dinner is an 'occasion' to be savoured in every sense, with much better than usual hotel cuisine, a resident pianist and full silver service. Small children (under 6) are provided for earlier. So the result is a leisurely, copious meal in a warm and happy atmosphere. We wanted to eat early one evening before going to the theatre, and were accommodated extremely well - even being provided with a coffee and cake on our return at 10:30!

Nothing is perfect, and perhaps there are less well furnished or maintained rooms that we just didn't see. Personally, I would have preferred a duvet rather than (immaculate) cotton sheets and blankets - but then I didn't ask, so I didn't get. Overall I would rate this as one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at - not for it's architecture (grand and impressive though that is), or it's facilities (though it seems to have eveything one might reasonably need). The thing that stood out was the sheer professionalism and attention to detail from the staff. If you value service, and a good dinner - this is the place.

Just returned from a 3 night break which was excellent value for money. Paid more for an upgrade to a garden view room which was clean and good facilities. The hotel has lots of facilities which we didn't use but any-one with a family would find really useful. Breakfast and dinner were very good with a varied selection. Service was friendly, helpful and of a high standard.
Some of the rooms are alittle dated but there is work being carried out and it is such a big hotel that it takes time. The rooms are still comfortable, with full bathroom facilities, tea and coffee making. Plus we liked the biscuits at bedtime!!

Wanted a romantic break with my partner, this certainly fitted the bill! Arrived on friday night went to eat in the hotel restaurant and what great food and service foie gras starter (excellent) and Lamb sublime. The room was very clean with stunning period features. Raining on the Saturday so went for a swim in the clean pool, then the sauna, coffee in the lounge. Then spent a nice evening in the art deco bar doing some serious people watching, if only the weather was better for a bit of golf!
Great my partner was very happy and so was I.
definate recommendation for a romantic getaway
