“Terrific!”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

My wife and I reserved a room with sea view here recently and were pleasantly surprised to find we had be allocated a "family room", which was exceptionally spacious, and just literally a stone's throw from the shore! It was magnificent in all but one respect - the wardrobe really needed some attention, with none of the three doors closable unless the adjoining door was opened slightly! Just a small niggle.

The bar and lounge area was very airy and spacious - again with panoramic view across the bay, comfortably furnished and well-appointed. The waiter behind the bar although just out of short trousers in appearance was absolutely charming and very efficient.

We moved in to the sumptuously appointed dining room to be greeted by another charming member of staff - this time a young lady who showed us to our table and presented us with the extensive set dinner menu of four courses plus coffee. She took our drinks order and this was delivered by a the head waiter in elegant and pristine dinner jacket complete with fresh button-hole and patent leather shoes. Our first course arrived in a very short space of time and proved delicious. The rest of the courses were equally flavoursome and beautifully presented. Service throughout was seamless, indeed faultless - but even more remarkable was that the waitresses were all of foreign origin, spoke perfect English and executed silver service perfectly!

We headed for our bedroom quite early and spent a leisurely few hours relaxing in the comfortable armchairs in the room and gazing at the vista before us - Torquay by night!

Breakfast the following morning was a very civilised affair with a good buffet selection and extensive cooked selection which was served to tables. I had bacon and poached eggs which was cooked to perfection and without having to ask, copious quantities of toast arrived on the table.

We checked out later with the same charming lady who checked us in the previous night. She was genuinely interested in our trip - where we had been and where we were going next etc. that it totally took my mind off the amount of the bill! No, our one night stay didn't come cheap, but as I had no real complaints about the place - it would be churlish to complain about the final cost.

We had a very enjoyable three night break with our grandson in Easter week. Our double sea-view room was extremely clean and recently decorated. The six foot bed was really comfortable and we slept like logs. The bathroom suite was dated but fully functional. It cried out for a modern refurbishment- I imagined it with a walk-in monsoon shower! Our grandson's sea-view single room was small but very clean and had a good walk-in shower.
We didn't take evening meals in the hotel but the quality of the breakfast was acceptable, our only criticism was that the portion size of the cooked breakfast was a bit small (especially in the opinion of our strapping 18 year old grandson). All the hotel staff were extremely pleasant and helpful.
All in all a very good seaside hotel which with just a bit more investment could be fantastic one.

Room Tip: Book a sea-view room as the non sea-view ones are overlooking the main Torquay to Paignton road and...

To meet family members for a reunion the lounge is ideal along with some lovely shortbread biscuits and some perfect tea or coffee. There plenty of car park space and areas inside or out to gather. An ideal hotel for not only just a meeting but for other events such as a wedding !

The sea view room we stayed in was dated and chintzy in decor and fixtures ,as were the bathroom fixtures with a tap that would not turn off properly and no extractor fan. The worst part was the cooked breakfast option with only one burnt sausage , one rasher of bacon and half a burnt tomato as well as a cold poached egg leading to the worst cooked hotel breakfast we have experienced in over 25 years.

Room Tip: Don't bother , it's too expensive and too dated . Try somewhere else.

An excellent hotel, the third of the three located near to one another in Torquay, all family owned by the Rew family. This has the distinct advantage of being on the sea side of the coastal road, the garden area along the shore line, and steps down to a small secluded beach.
I have stayed in the other two, the Corbyn Head and the Livermead, and could not fault them.
This time was seeking peace and opportunity for quiet reflection in a quality environment.
Whilst the latter was provided, at acceptable cost, the peace and quiet was not secure throughout an extended weekend.
The existence of a function suite enabled the hotel to offer receptions, parties and the like; and it was clearly the venue of choice locally. Sadly, the parental control of children attending for several hours on two days fell well short of my expectations (I am over 80), with unrestrained rushing around the grassed area and unlimited shouting. Not an easily tolerated circumstance, and one which the management may wish to consider with some care, if continuation of return visitors is not to be prejudiced.
As a moderate pipe smoker I was somewhat surprised to find that I was banned from even smoking on the balcony; but more significantly, that it was a shared balcony anyway!
Feel slightly short-changed, but in all other respects, not least the culinary achievements, cannot seriously fault the hotel.

Room Tip: Check whether balcony is exclusive to the room, and what may be held in the function room while you...

Lovely traditional hotel, very clean and tidy and quiet (some band noise on a Saturday night but nothing to worry about), some rooms a little tired. Staff excellent, helpful and pleasant. We only had breakfast which was OK but not exceptional. Superb view and excellent function facilities. Reasonable car parking but quite difficult to exit and turn right because of the flow of traffic on a busy road.
