Owner description: Kents Cavern is by far Britain's most important prehistoric cave used by ancient humans for the last 500,000 years including Neanderthals and early modern humans. The caves are open every day for guide tours, 7 days a week with natural caverns, amazing natural formations, remains of mammoth, woolly rhino, sabre-toothed cats, an Ice Age woodland trail quest, nice shop and cafe with views over the Ilsham Valley. The closest hotel to the attraction is the Gleneagles, inspiration for TV's Fawlty Towers. We are 2km from Torquay Harbour and only 15 mins walk from the South West Coast Path and local beaches, well-known to previous visitors like Agatha Christie, Beatrix Potter, George V, Alfred Wallace and Charles Darwin. Perfect for a rainy or sunny day by the seas, winter or summer.

“Going way back in time”

Visit is by way of guided tour- approx 1hr. The guide made the history of the cave interesting for adults and children. Liked the demo in the bear cavern with the prehistoric lamp and then turning out the lights to show the complete darkness. At the end of the tour are some labelled exhibits which supplemented it well.Would advise phoning ahead of your visit if planning to go at a busy time (such as a wet day in the school holidays as I did). You can book your timed slot and avoid too much waiting around. Would thoroughly recommend a visit.

Many thanks for giving us the top 5 stars, we really appreciate it, particularly breaking the run of 4 stars! Glad you enjoyed shell fire in the Bears Den, that's the bit everyone likes. The recommendations you make are very useful and thanks for that.

“Very appealing-particularly on a wet day”

There are not many accessible insights into the world of this age and this is particularly well maintained- particularly recommended for a wet day.

Thanks for the nice review. It certainly is the place to be on a wet day. But probably worth pointing out that everyone has the same idea, and in the high summer, waiting times can be up to 1 hour on wet days. However, whatever the weather, everyone will get the same insight into the amazing prehistoric world of Kents Cavern.

“Kents Cavern”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 June 2012

I visted the caves with my partner and another couple. It was a very interesting trip and the guide ( I think his name was Chris) was very knowledgable. He kept everyone interested and was great with the kids on the tour. The tour was only about an hour so not too long. I would recommend as something enjoyable to do for anyone.

“Kids will be entertained”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 June 2012

WE came for a bit of history and something to do on a cloudy day and were nicely suprised. The caves are of course amazing as they are but the guide who is a young feller really made the place come alive for the youngsters in the group .
Ideal for couples with young kids.
