“Great lunch on the terrace”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 June 2014

We arranged to meet friends for lunch on the terrace. What a wonderful way to spend a few hours and enjoy some good food and excellent service. You can sit on the terrace looking out to sea, have lunch and then move up a level to more comfortable seating and enjoy a really relaxed time to talk over coffee. We never felt hurried and it was a great experience.

We were moved to this hotel after booking elsewhere via Hotels.com and being double booked. I am so glad we were as it was simply the best hotel in Torquay, and we have stayed in many hotels in Torquay and around the world.

The staff are friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The room was large, overlooked the bay and was very comfortable. Outside, the terrace was lovely, although we could not eat in the restaurant that evening due to a wedding, it looked very nice.

At breakfast, the waiter was efficient, polite and professional. It is the additional touches, the magazines and information in the rooms, binoculars to see the wonderful view across to Brixham, water etc. All in all, an excellent hotel.

Room Tip: Sea view room is a must!

My wife and I have just come back from a 4 nights break at The Osborne. Great hotel, lovely large, clean room, bathroom adequate size and hot water. The view from the 3 windows was something to die for. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Binoculars supplied was a nice extra. The food in the reastaurant was as good as we have had anywhere. The wating staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the dishes. On the second evenning I commented on the fact that the 6 main dishes were not going to be changed which resticted my wife's choice over 4 nights as she is not keen on meat, the next evenning we were shown a "specials" menu which solved our promlem. Parking was not always easy but we did always manage to find somewhere. As retired hoteliers we know how difficult it is to keep up this high standard and intend to return later in the year.

Room Tip: We had a sea facing room so cannot comment on any of the other rooms.

It is a few years since we last stayed at the Osborne and had forgotten how nice it is. It may be a bit tired in places but is it still has a charm, is comfortable, clean with very helpful and friendly staff and the best location in Torquay. It was a real pleasure to enjoy a breakfast which is cooked to order served to you on tables with fresh white linen and good quality cutlery and china. The purpose of our trip was to visit family and recently have stayed at the Premier Inn which this time of year is about the same price as the Osborne, however, it is so much nicer at the Osborne and well worth the extra you might have to pay.

Set in a superb, slightly secluded position, this hotel is presented beautifully.
We originally had a room without a sea view that overlooked the back. These rooms are large and furnished very tastefully in a modern style. They have a view out onto trees and some pretty properties, so it is not too bad.
We upgraded to the front of the hotel to a suite because of the sea view and it was just about worth it. The suite was more in keeping with the older style of the hotel, with period furniture and features, but generally in need of an update; new curtains and fresh paint! It was also incredibly dusty. (Don't bother to mention this to house-keeping, as you may get the same response that I had: "It is a dusty room." It may be, but one days worth of dust does not allow you to write in it! And for it still to be there the next day!!) Also, there were messy wires on show connecting the TV.
The bathroom was dark, but quite clean. Like the suite, it was in need of an overhaul and toiletries and products require replenishing more thoroughly. (Had to ask for toilet roll, which is always uncomfortable.)
The pool area is rather 'grotty' and a bit depressing.
The restaurant itself is grand, but very dated, and the menu is tired and not appealing. Some breakfast items had passed their 'use by date' by a few days and there wasn't a very inspiring continental selection, but otherwise breakfast was good.
The hotel advertises food being served in the brasserie next door until 9.30pm, but we were turned away at 9pm, and had to go without dinner on the first night.
The grounds of the hotel, the facade, and the view is impressive. There is a lovely seating area outside and it has a great ambiance in the late afternoon. - No sun anywhere after 7 pm.
The manager is incredibly charming, pleasant and helpful.

Overall, this hotel is over-priced and in need of updating by today's standards, but there is still something about it that is quite shabby-chic and nice.

Room Tip: Sea views are amazing, but rooms need renovation. Rooms without sea view have fantastic decor. Eat...

From the moment my wife and I walked into the hotel entrance, we realised that the Osborne was a very nice and well maintained establishment. We arrived earlier than the normal check in, but were greeted cordially by the receptionist and only waited 10 minutes for our sea view room to be made available. We took the lift up to the third floor and we were very pleasantly surprised at the size of the split level bedroom. The view from the window was breathtaking, great views of the outdoor pool area and tennis court, with Thatchers Rock and Torbay beyond, Berry Head in the distance. There were even complimentary binoculars provided. The room was tastefully decorated and leather chairs in the sitting area very comfortable. It was nice to see that the shower was powerful and provided hot water as and when required (unlike some hotels of this age we had stayed in).

We stayed on a 'Living Socials' deal which was excellent value for money, three nights B&B with Evening meal on the first night. The meal was absolutely superb, as was the heart breakfast each morning. Given its elevated position, there is a bit of a hilly walk to/ from the centre of Torquay, but we did it in about 12 minutes, there was a local bus which stopped outside the hotel gates, but we enjoyed the exercise and walked to the local Wetherspoons at the bottom of the hill for some meals.

There was plenty of free parking at the front and side of the hotel. A path led down to nearby Meadfoot beach which had a lovely cafe serving coffees, ice creams and other delicacies, the view from its balcony was really nice across the bay. Unfortunately it was mainly cloudy during our stay last week, but otherwise our stay was most enjoyable.

We will stay at the Osborne again, hopefully there will be a similar voucher deal in the future. We would like to thank the owner, manager and his staff for making our stay so good.

Ian & Liz

Room Tip: Pay the extra, as we did, for a 3rd floor sea view room, the views are superb. The balcony rooms on...

great location, lovely hotel, hotel was very clean and we managed to park just outstide which was great as we are Blue Badge holders. We went with another couple. Langtry's restaurant, lovely food, but very strangely there were supplements on most dishes, including the crab starter - one of the best things I've ever tasted - and you also had to pay for vegetable accompaniments to your main course. I've never come across this before. The should of lamb - as a main course selected by two of us - was sadly tasteless - and although we mentioned it to restaurant staff, no-one was interested. Also I requested the yoghurt at breakfast at 8.30 am on a Saturday morning and they hadn't had the delivery. We would definitely stay there again although we would get a room upgrade - but for the Living Social price we paid it was excellent. Beware of hidden extras - as a special occasion for us it was still well worth it - but if you're watching the budget beware.

Room Tip: Health club and indoor pool n site within the hotel and an outdoor pool + woodland walks were righ o...
