We ended up here because when I booked a competitor ( the #1 hotel on Tripadvisor ) I got the date wrong so when we arrived the was "no room at the Inn " . a However they phoned the Haytor and a Roger ( the owner ) found us a room . It was a delight . He was a delight . No attempt to gouge us despite our predicament . Very nice room . The bed is a bit small but very comfortable . The bathroom is fine for one of these old places but the shower really needs an instruction book . The breakfast was very good and the service friendly and efficient . Roger gave us great directions for our journey to Cornwall. Short walk to town and all the restaurants , though a tough walk up the hill coming back . The hotel is fairly old I suppose but superbly kept up .

Thanks for leaving a review and we're glad to have helped.
The hotel the guests originally booked (not actually the one that shows as #1 when you view all hotels, but I wouldn't be surprised if it shows as #1 in one of the "sort functions" you can use) is a lovely hotel and we regularly refer guests when we are fully booked. I know they would have done anything they could to find the guests a room if they could have (the guests accidentally turned up a night early - I've done that myself!). It comes as no surprise that the owners found a room at another hotel for the guests - its what hotels like ours (individual, personal, owner run) do, we do our best to fix any problem the guest has.
The main part of the hotel was originally a gentleman's villa set in its own grounds, and build in 1853, We have a range of room types, and bed sizes range from double to superking, and twins depending on the room types - all our beds have luxury mattress toppers to make them even more cosy.
Our bathrooms vary room to room, a couple just have a bath, most have shower cubicles and we have a couple with over-bath showers - if you have a specific requirement, book with us direct, our contact details are at the top of this page, on the left side just under the hotel name.
We're glad you enjoyed our breakfasts, the sausage, bacon and eggs are all from local farms.
The 5 min walk to the town (400m as the crow flies, probably around 450m if you chose not to fly!) is down a slope that averages 1 in 15 - not 1 in 20 as I accidentally wrote in in my reply to the review titled "Above and Beyond" a few reviews ago. In that review the guest also comments on the slope, suggesting its fine on the way down but if you have "dodgy knees" you may be better to take a quick cab ride back, though don't get settled as you'll be home within a couple of minutes as we're actually the first hotel you come to on Meadfoot Road.

We had booked into another hotel and there was a mix up, and luck for us they referred us to the Haytor, where Roger was literally waiting at the door to greet us. He showed us all the rooms available so we could choose the one that suited us. He gave us all the information we needed about the hotel and the area. It was a very short walk down to the sea front and all the restaurants etc. Our room was lovely, exceptionally well kept. Roger gave us the names of several restaurants and we were keen to try Jingles but it was booked solid (Easter weekend) but we went across the street to an Indian Restaurant ________ Spice and had a great meal. Breakfast was delicious and we had a lovely box of chocs at our table for Easter, even although we were late arrivals. A very nice and thoughtful touch.
We were heading to Port Isaac and Roger gave us great directions to travel through the moors and we are very grateful. I know we had a much nicer trip today (despite the rain) than we would have without Roger's suggestion. We left right after breakfast so didn't get a chance to thank Roger, so thank you so much. We would love to come again and direct our friends here without hesitation. Happy Easter.

Thanks for your review, and we're glad to have been able to have helped.
The restaurant you couldn't remember the full name of is Simla Spice, our favourite choice for a curry, but there are others as well, and a whole range of different food types from Brixham fish to Greek / Turkish, and from chippies to Michelin starred.

We stayed for 4 lovely nights recently at the Haytor and can heartily endorse all the previous positive comments made by reviewers. It's the little things that show that Peter and Roger go above and beyond to ensure your stay is excellent. e.g In the room we were delighted to find 2 bottles of water (replenished each day) and biscuits for the plentiful supply of tea and coffee - its these nice touches that other places often don't bother with.

Plenty of spacious parking in front of the hotel and a warm welcome gave us all the info we needed for touring the area. The room and shower were spotlessly clean and nicely decorated, with bathroom items replaced each day. We only booked a standard double room (room 14) and found the bed a little small for us (we have a super-king at home!) but it was still comfortable enough. Check this before booking if you have similar concerns. Breakfast was great and consistently cooked to perfection every morning with just the right size portions.

If you are looking to stay in Torquay, I doubt you will find anything better than the Haytor - one of the very best B&B we have ever stayed at.
The Hotel is situated in a quiet, pleasant side road just 5 mins walk from the centre, but do note that it is on a hill. OK going down, but could be a struggle coming back if like us you have dodgy knees or any trouble walking.

Highly recommended and would certainly stay again if re-visiting the area.

Many thanks for your review and we're glad you enjoyed your stay.
Our Small and Standard rooms all have standard double beds, whilst if you'd like a larger bed, we also have rooms with Kingsize, Superking, and indeed Twin beds, so if you have a particular need, please do get in touch directly with us, our contact deals are shown are the top of this page, on the left side under the hotel name.
Regarding the slope down to town, Devon is a hilly county and Torquay is built on a number of hills, but fortunately we're in a good position in Town, in a leafy conservation area just 400m from the Harbour and the first hotel you get to along Meadfoot Road. The slope from the Town averages 1 in 15. I think the reviewer hits the nail on the head, the walk down is fine, but if you do have "dodgy knees", you might appreciate a quick cab ride back to the hotel - Cabs are normally plentiful and know us well.

A very nice, quite stylish place in a Farrow & Ball sort of way, with very friendly but not intrusive owners. Good value, and better value than the Imperial, where we've stayed a few times. Our room was a bit small but no worries as we weren't 'living' in it. Also very central and in nice, leafy, 'upkmarket' part of Torquay. Highly recommended.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review and for your kind comments. What a good eye you have, we do indeed use Farrow & Ball paint among others!
We have a wide range of room sizes from Small Doubles to Premier rooms with Superking beds.
The Small Doubles are compact (though still with the same luxury bed toppers and Aromatherapy en-suite products etc of course) and are perhaps more suitable for a short break than a week or two stay, or for a single person (we offer a single occupancy discount). Our Standard Doubles are larger and are also available with a single occupancy discount. And then we have our luxury rooms, the Executive, Superior, and Premiers, all larger than the last and all with either King or Superking beds.

Your three day stay in the Haytor was an absolute pleasure. The service was excellent, the room was fine and the breakfast was substantial. Throughout, Peter and Roger were fine hosts and very responsive to our needs etc. We will be happy to stay again and recommend it to family and friends.

Our hosts Roger and Peter are very lovely, easy going and know how to make one feel welcome and at home. At check-in, their experience shows, as they had everything neatly covered, or at hand for almost any enquiry. A relief not to have to run back, to inquire about missing details, (such as the wifi password) which they supplied it before I could think to ask.

Their Haytor Hotel is a generous historic old home. Lovely, airy, clean, everything is up to date and in good repair, with quality drapery and lovely furnishings. The black out drapes in our bedroom were beautiful and thick! Nice to be able to open our room windows to the sea air. (Word has it, all the sashes have been painstakingly restored just this year.)
Breakfast was delicious and well prepared. The menu included English Breakfast and a few other good choices. Plus they have soy milk on hand if desired.
The location is steps away from the center of town, so it couldn't be better.
(Also, let it be known, they have repeat guests in an industry where people always want to try for something new.... we met some on our way to check in!)

Staying here was an easygoing pleasure, a calming environment, and recommended.

Room Tip: Our room #5, had a view over the garden and out across Torquay. It wasn't a huge room but it was...

We stayed at the Haytor Hotel for 4 nights in March. We got a warm welcome and a smooth check in from Roger and Peter. Our bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in, and our room was light and airy, well equipped and clean. We really loved our breakfasts - it has been many decades since I had a boiled egg and soldiers! Our dining table looked out over the garden where we were entertained by acrobatic squirrels and low flying ducks coming in to land on the pond. The hotel is a short walk from town and Peter and Roger gave us really good advice about places to eat, and even arranged a visit for us to a local Passivhaus. We had a very relaxing break in lovely surrounding and would thoroughly recommend the Haytor Hotel.

Thank you for your lovely review and we're glad you enjoyed your stay. For readers interest, there have been some soap opera like developments in the lives of our visiting ducks. A longtime pair of wild ducks visit most days to swim in our pond, recently a second male duck has joined them, and the female is paying a little too close attention to this new arrival! We are of course arranging couple counselling for them and are putting a singles ad on Quack.com for the new male.
By the way boiled egg soldiers are on our menu, but not compulsory (even though it is the best way to eat our lovely fresh Devon freerange boiled eggs).
