“Affordable luxury.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 May 2014

Set in a quiet leafy spot, a short walk from all that Torquay harbour has to offer, as some have already reviewed, it is halfway up the hill, but we didn't find it too bad at all. Its not too steep a hill.
The owners are knowledgeable, very helpful & friendly, Our room was perfect, i'd pre chosen from the images on the hotel website, & was not disappointed. Best described as, luxurious, clean, warm & inviting. The bed was very comfy.
Breakfast had a good selection of cereals, muesli, fresh fruit, yogurts, & juices on the dresser in the breakfast room, cafetiere coffee was a nice touch, before choosing from a menu offering delights from a cream cheese bagel, boiled egg & soldiers (complete with smiley faces ;) ) to a full English breakfast, which was delicious. The lady who served breakfast is wonderful too.
We'd be back in a heartbeat, thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We stayed for two nights at the Haytor Hotel and very much enjoyed our stay. Hotel owners Roger and Peter gave us a warm welcome and some very useful advice on Torquay and beyond. The rooms are spotlessly clean, quiet and cosy as is the breakfast room where we, as French people, were introduced to the traditional English porridge !

Many thanks for taking the time to leave your review and for your lovely comments. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and hope you get a chance to visit the UK again before long. Just one thing I should point out - we English can't take credit for Porridge, it's the Scots who are famed for it in the UK, though it originated in prehistoric times!

If you're looking for fantastic hospitality, with a great location and affordable luxury, you get it here at the Haytor Hotel.

Perfectly placed above the harbour giving you that secluded feel without being out of town (less than 10 minutes walk to the harbour and the top 4 restaurants in a Torquay).

Couldn't recommend this hotel highly enough. Our hosts were so welcoming and Jean who looked after us at breakfast time was an absolute gem.

If you come to Torquay, stay here. We will most definitely be back.

We booked last minute for 4 nights over the Easter break - very glad we did! We had a fantastic stay here. The welcome on arrival was friendly with lots of information and help was given with our luggage. The room was small but perfectly formed, immaculately clean ( as was the rest of the hotel) and had a really comfy bed which mean't we slept well! I just wish more hotels bothered to provide comfy beds... Breakfast was also a treat with a selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, juices etc followed by a delicious cooked breakfast - clearly locally sourced sausage, bacon, eggs etc. Yummy! Situated close to the harbour, restaurants etc made it easy to get around while leaving the car at the hotel. Many thanks, too, for allowing our friends to leave their car in your car park for an afternoon even though they weren't staying with you. All in all, a very enjoyable experience - many thanks to Roger, Peter, Jean and Por for making our stay enjoyable and relaxing. Highly recommended.

Many thanks for taking the time to leave a review and for your kind comments, we're glad you enjoyed your stay and look forward to seeing you again in the future.
The team here is also small and (we like to think!) perfectly formed and thank you for your praise.
We have a variety of room sizes from the Small doubles to our Premier rooms which have either King, Superking, or Twin beds, so hopefully there is something to suit everyone, and for those extra tall people, our Superking beds give that extra length and well as width.
All our beds - whatever room you choose - have luxury mattress toppers which do provide an extra layer of comfort.
Best wishes and hope to see you again before long.

Just enjoyed an excellent 4 day break . Owners knowledgable and always ready to help with recommendations for evening meal or the best places to visit. Hotel easy walking distance from centre of Torquay . Beautifully maintained and full of character. Great breakfast and pleasant service at breakfast . Thanks would have no hesitation but to recommend the hotel . Nigel & Denise Solihull .

brilliant hotel they couldn't do enough for you. My wife and myself would have no doubt about recommending this hotel. The breakfasts were varied with several options from vegitarian to full english. Also a great location only five minutes walk fro the marina altogh the hill is rather steep. The rooms and guest ares were spotless

Thanks for your review and your kind comments.
We're glad you enjoyed your stay and had a good easter break.
As far as the slope back up to the hotel is concerned, we're 400m from the Harbour and the slope averages at around 1 in 15, so whilst you probably wont run up it after a heavy meal, its only a short walk, and we're the first hotel you get to on Meadfoot Road. If you have a walking problem, and we often have guests with a "dodgy knee" etc. the walk down may still be fine, but there are plenty of cabs normally available in the Harbour just to run you back to the hotel.

We ended up here because when I booked a competitor ( the #1 hotel on Tripadvisor ) I got the date wrong so when we arrived the was "no room at the Inn " . a However they phoned the Haytor and a Roger ( the owner ) found us a room . It was a delight . He was a delight . No attempt to gouge us despite our predicament . Very nice room . The bed is a bit small but very comfortable . The bathroom is fine for one of these old places but the shower really needs an instruction book . The breakfast was very good and the service friendly and efficient . Roger gave us great directions for our journey to Cornwall. Short walk to town and all the restaurants , though a tough walk up the hill coming back . The hotel is fairly old I suppose but superbly kept up .

Thanks for leaving a review and we're glad to have helped.
The hotel the guests originally booked (not actually the one that shows as #1 when you view all hotels, but I wouldn't be surprised if it shows as #1 in one of the "sort functions" you can use) is a lovely hotel and we regularly refer guests when we are fully booked. I know they would have done anything they could to find the guests a room if they could have (the guests accidentally turned up a night early - I've done that myself!). It comes as no surprise that the owners found a room at another hotel for the guests - its what hotels like ours (individual, personal, owner run) do, we do our best to fix any problem the guest has.
The main part of the hotel was originally a gentleman's villa set in its own grounds, and build in 1853, We have a range of room types, and bed sizes range from double to superking, and twins depending on the room types - all our beds have luxury mattress toppers to make them even more cosy.
Our bathrooms vary room to room, a couple just have a bath, most have shower cubicles and we have a couple with over-bath showers - if you have a specific requirement, book with us direct, our contact details are at the top of this page, on the left side just under the hotel name.
We're glad you enjoyed our breakfasts, the sausage, bacon and eggs are all from local farms.
The 5 min walk to the town (400m as the crow flies, probably around 450m if you chose not to fly!) is down a slope that averages 1 in 15 - not 1 in 20 as I accidentally wrote in in my reply to the review titled "Above and Beyond" a few reviews ago. In that review the guest also comments on the slope, suggesting its fine on the way down but if you have "dodgy knees" you may be better to take a quick cab ride back, though don't get settled as you'll be home within a couple of minutes as we're actually the first hotel you come to on Meadfoot Road.
