5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 July 2014

Les and I had a 3 night stay at The Haytor Hotel from Sunday 13th July.

Welcome great, room great, hosts great, food great, area and even the weather great.

The plan was to relax and recharge and that is exactly what we did, whole experience was fantastic.

Room Tip: room 7, double aspect, sumptious.

My partner and I stayed at the Haytor hotel on the 22nd June 2014 for 4 nights and we were impressed in every way. The location of the hotel was just a 5 minute walk from all the attractions we needed and upon arrival we were greeted and given gudes to the best places to visit. The room was clean spacious and peaceful. We enjoyed the breakfast and our waitress was so friendly and helpful. We were even given routes to walk to get to different beaches along the coast. An over all thumbs up by all accounts we will definatley be staying again.

The Haytor is well situated just a few minutes walk from the town centre, in an elevated position. Our room was clean and comfortable, the hosts and other staff being very helpful and welcoming. An ideal base for us over the weekend.

I have just returned from a weekend at The Haytor, I stayed in room 10 as did another reviewer. I had the room as a single occupancy which may have been slightly different. I loved the room and was totally relaxed. The shower just right, comfortable bed, good quality bed linen, spotlessly clean, plenty of tea and coffee in the room.
I would have liked to have stayed longer and would recommend it and return for another stay. A great welcome with an excellent breakfast served by friendly attentive staff. There was so much to do in the area, even without my car, being well located, with lots of info provided by your hosts. The area has a ride range of restaurants with something to suit all tastes. Thanks guys.

Room Tip: All rooms appear to be good just check the web site for one which suits your needs best.

I have stayed at The Haytor Hotel in the middle of June for 2 nights (shame I haven't stayed for longer!). The hotel is placed in good location, 5 min away from the centre and harbour. It is lovely decorated, very clean and most of all has got amazing comfy beds! So comfy, that I overslept my breakfast next day ha ha! Haven't slept sooo good in ages... Stuff is very welcoming and very helpful - I did like the fact, that they inform you where to go to eat, as well what to do with yourself and your time. Little map and brochures are very handy. As soon as I'll have a chance, I will definitely come back! My friends knows about this place already ;)
Thank you! :)

Many thanks for your lovely review and for already recommending us to others!
We're sorry you overslept! Our beds can make that happen, but perhaps it was just your body telling you you needed the rest more than (our albeit very nice) breakfast. Glad you enjoyed your stay.

Stayed two nights this week, very small room no:10 - the shower was not up to the usual standard - just a trickle......we noticed small changes and can now see why it has been moved off the top spot....we were a bit shocked to asked for £5.00 charge for ice to go with the water in the room....why? - we told it was to do with drinks licence - not sure I believe this - the garden has lost its colour and the grass was way too long - the seating outside should be thrown away.......guys just small things which can easily be remedied...

Room Tip: Do not choose room 10 if you want a large room

We normally thank guests for leaving us reviews, but unfortunately in this case, as the review contains inaccuracies and misrepresents the actual position, we feel its neither a fair review nor helpful to future travellers, which surely is the point of a review website.

You raise a number of points, none of which you raised when we spoke, on several occasions, and asked if everything was okay.

To take the issues one by one:

SHOWER: We have struggled to replicate the “trickle” described, and do not recall any previous comments about this shower, and are therefore struggling to track down the issue but will obviously be keeping a close eye on it. We have checked with the current guest who is having no issues with it, and the guest that used the room immediately after you has actually left a positive review regarding the shower. It is a tank fed mixer shower, and not a “power shower” (we don’t use power showers in the hotel), but it seems to be operating perfectly normally at the moment. We are a little surprised nothing was mentioned during the stay.

SMALL ROOM: Number 10 is one of our Small Doubles, our cheapest rooms, and described on our website as “Small Double” with photograph, we’re struggling to really understand what the guest expected to receive on arrival, having booked a Small Double. We do realise you had originally wanted a larger room, but as we were almost full when you booked, this was the only room available. This was clearly explained to you and you decided to go ahead and book on this basis. We do have a range of other rooms: Standards doubles with either bath or shower, Executive and Superior kings and Premier kings, Superkings and twins. As far as your room tip goes, we would perhaps phrase it slightly differently, if you want a large room, do not book a Small Double.

GARDEN and LAWNS: It’s difficult to judge whether the garden is looking more or less colourful this week than it normally does, it is something that varies week to week although there seems plenty of colour which other guests have commented on. As far as the grass length goes, we have to hold our hands up, it was due to be cut at the weekend, but it rained after an extended dry spell and followed hot a hot period the grass then bolted as a result. We estimate the average length was 2-4 inches and had shot up some flowers in some places, and whilst we do not plan a bowling green this is longer than we would normally have, and has since been cut. We don’t really understand the comment about the seating, the seating and tables on our garden terrace are perfectly functional and treated annually with teak oil to maintain their look.

It’s also worth correcting the suggestion we have dropped in our Trip Advisor position, we have actually risen in the rankings over the last 12 months. The guest may have been misled by another recent review which erroneously referred to us as the #1 Hotel – something we hope to achieve at some point in the future.

Finally we get to the issue that we believe might be at the root of this review.
ICE: On the first evening of these guests’ stay, one came down and asked for “ice to cool our wine” which they had brought with them. This was very clear and was not, as the review states, to cool the complimentary water we supply in the room, and readers may draw their own conclusions why the wine turned into water between the event and the review. If a guest had asked to swop their water for some out of the fridge, we would, of course have no problem with this. However, we are a licensed hotel with a wide range of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks available for sale and in addition to our bar and terrace, can supply room service. Many hotels simply do not allow own alcohol on the premises and refuse to supply ice. However we understand that that are situations when a guest may wish to consume their own alcohol in their rooms and to accommodate this we have a simple corkage charge, normally £5 per day, and with this, we will also supply glasses and ice if required.

We are sorry the grass was longer than normal but would like to reassure the guest that this was resolved as soon as we could once the ground dried. If there were problems with the shower its a shame this wasn’t brought to our notice when it occurred so we could have seen it and done something about it. I’m afraid if we describe a room as a Small Double it should not come as a surprise if the room is a small double. Finally, we believe our approach to own alcohol consumed on the premises is reasonable, transparent and fair, and is clearly shown on our website and the reverse of the Registration slip the guests signed when they checked in and agreed to our terms and conditions.

It’s also perhaps with drawing readers attention to the review left by the very next guest to stay in the same room, which can be found two spots above this review in the full review listings and is titled “Summer weekend break” which rates us as “Excellent” and reads “... I loved the room and was totally relaxed. The shower just right, comfortable bed, good quality bed linen, spotlessly clean, plenty of tea and coffee in the room. I would have liked to have stayed longer and would recommend it and return for another stay. A great welcome with an excellent breakfast served by friendly attentive staff... ”

The Haytor hotel is a very friendly hotel with lovely comfortable beds and a nice little bar for a night cap.
The breakfast is perfectly cooked and served quickly and efficiently.
The local attractions and bars are within easy walking distance and downhill from the hotel, there are taxi ranks near the harbour and the fare is only about £3 to come back.
