Have just returned from our family hols with 2 adults and 2 kids (6yrs and 18months).
Being more used to modern built chain hotels with their tiled floors and leather sofas; my first impression of the Derwent which is an old buliding with its big pattern carpets and 80's style wallpaper and furniture - was that of an OAP home. However everything was clean and we checked into an enormous standard plus room with everything that we needed.
Dining room is large and split into sections each with their own self service area and also a set menu choice with waiter service, we were happy with our breakfast and dinner choices and food was good although nothing outstanding, service was excellent. It is busy and bustling with tables quite close and no frills (eg. no table cloths) But when eating with children mealtimes are never a relaxing time to linger over so it suited us fine!
We used most facilities - the indoor pool and childrens pool are lovely and kids enjoyed, with a steam room, sauna and jacuzzi near by we could enjoy also. Main outdoor pool is not heated but we did have one really hot day when we used the pool and relaxed on the sunloungers and felt as though we were abroad! Arena games and the indoor soft play are good but the bar area is small with uncomfortable furniture so adults can't exactly sit back and relax whilst kids have fun, It became a bit of a chore to visit!
Outdoor adventure play is very dated and not very exciting and again is a pain for the adults as it is located away from everything else so you have to stand around whilst watching them - however my 6 year old was happy enough playing in there.
Entertainments team are great with the kids my 6 yr old used the (very secure) kids club and had a fab time, just very disappointing that only 3 kids ever turned up despite there being plenty in the hotel, particularly between 7.15 and 9pm when you can leave them and they should have their own disco and competitions etc if only enough used it!! 9pm eve ent. began in starlight lounge which again was good Kevin began and entertained kids for a while on dancefloor whilst also getting the adults involved, 10pm was grown up time with live music / ent. team show which was perfectly watchable and as it should be; entertaining although not outstanding.
My only real complaint would be that i wish there had been more activities put on for wet days when we are all stuck inside- the daytime itinery states 'weather permitting' with no alternative if wet!! Yet this is when you need it most! they should make more use of the starlight lounge during the day and be more ad hoc with their activities updating on day etc. according to weather (we were one week out of school holidays)
There is loads to do in the area if you have a car but wouldn't have wanted to be stuck in hotel for more than a day unless they had more organised activities going on for the kids/families. There is of course the kids club but during the day it is located in their play room (which is good) in the basement and you have to be present during these daytime sessions which could mean spending two hours a day of your holiday in a nursery! They do sometimes move the club to arena games which is better.
Overall we had a fantastic holiday exploring the area and then using the hotel from mid afternoon and evening which was perfect. My 6 yr old cried when he had to leave and despite my earlier reservations in no time i had really warmed to the hotel and the staff and we would most definitely return!
