“Nice but room for improvement”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 June 2014

Stayed for three nights. We booked a double room but were given a twin. This didn't matter though as we pushed the beds together. Our room was very, very small but unlike other reviewers we overlooked the car park so we weren't disturbed by traffic noise! The overall cleanliness of the communal areas were spotless, however the housekeeping of our room left a lot to be desired. The safety cap from a razor was on the steps leading to the bathroom and when we moved the beds the floor hadn't seen a Hoover since the new carpets were laid. This was reported but regrettably nothing was done. The bathroom shelf, the sink, the surfaces in our room and the mugs on the hospitality tray were not cleaned during our stay , which is quite shameful. There was also no door hooks to hang coats and no towel rails. We got soaking wet in a downpour and had nowhere to hang our wet clothes. the bedside cabinet was against the wardrobe so the door couldn't be opened and the lamp couldn't be plugged in as it couldn't reach the power socket !! The room would lend itself better to a single occupancy.
That said, we couldn't fault the staff, the service(apart from the lack of response to the room cleanliness) or the breakfasts. Entertainment was provided on both the Friday and Saturday nights and to say it was first class would be an understatement. It was brilliant. Tips to management would be to include a welcome pack in the rooms with information on the hotel, including breakfast times, emergency contact numbers for doctors etc and info on the surrounding area eg eateries, places to visit, public transport etc. Also defined markings for car parking would be helpful as there was some shoddy parking!! It would also increase the number of cars that could park.

We stayed here for 2 nights midweek, but were very disappointed with our room size. It was a twin room which I can only describe as "poky" One bed was right up to the wall under the window. Nowhere to put your suitcase and hardly any room to move around. Nothing like the twin rooms in the hotel adverts. Very nice bathroom with complimentary toiletries and decent towels.
Only had breakfast here, but it was good and plentiful. Lovely attentive staff brought tea or coffee very quickly. A help yourself buffet all nicely cooked. The toasters were a bit of a joke though. It was pot luck whether you got both sides toasted.
A handy path through the garden takes you practically to Torre Abbey and bowling greens and other amenities.
We found the traffic noise annoying at night.
Reading some of the reviews, I think we were just unlucky in the room we got allocated. Don't think we could have managed a week in it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back to avoid traffic noise

Have recently returned from a mid-week break the this hotel. My father and I were travelling as part of a large coach party. The hotel was a late change by the coach company, but we really lucked out.
The hotel has been recently refurnished and you can tell this. The rooms were very comfortable and my bathroom practically brand new. The only slight niggle was that the bath towels could of been bigger ie bath sheets.
Breakfast was buffet style and plentiful. Dinner was a little more limited, but still very tasty. They even organised a BBQ for the last night.
The staff were all really friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to anyone.

We had the pleasure of staying at the Marquis Hotel for 5 days last week as part of a coach party. Fortunately this was due to a last minute change of hotel by the coach company. Despite the great reviews here, we were a little apprehensive as this hotel does not normally cater for coach parties but we had nothing to worry about. The coach driver phoned the hotel ahead but all of the rooms were not ready as we were a little early. After a nice stroll around town, we arrived at the hotel with all room keys allocated and luggage in our rooms - impressed!

The main beach is a 2-3 min walk from the hotel and the the harbour/town a further 10-15 min walk.

The hotel has been recently renovated from top to bottom. The bedroom was lovely, comfy, clean and the bathroom pretty much brand new. There was a lovely, modern bar and dining restaurant affording views of the sea. Thankfully, the history of this beautiful building has been maintained. Breakfast each morning was based on a buffet and was tasty and plentiful. Likewise dinner (though limited choice due to coach package) was tasty and well made and quite unlike the usual 'stodge' you normally get on coach holidays. On the first night, I was a little disappointed that there was no vegetarian option for my wife but this was quickly sorted out. The manager personally came to us to apologise and to ensure there was a veggie option going forward - the chef specially prepared a vegetarian dish each night for my wife.

All of the hotel staff are really friendly, chatty and helpful which is quite rare nowadays - they are a credit to the establishment. The management are really customer focussed and keen to gain feedback from customers. On the first evening, some of the customers (many are pensioners) were perturbed by the high drinks prices in the bar so the manager arranged a happy hour each evening which went down a treat. On our final night, as the weather was so good, the manager arranged a BBQ for us on the lovely roof terrace was a very pleasant surprise. Again the chef specially prepared some veggie food for my wife.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and would definitely consider staying here again if/when I return to the beautiful town of Torquay.

On arrival the staff were extremely friendly and showed us to our family room which was immaculate! The room was a great size, the beds are comfy, plenty of cupboard and drawer space, more than enough storage for a couple and two children, so plenty for the wife, baby and myself. The bathroom is probably the best we've had anywhere, it's really clean, we'll laid out and plenty of clean towels everyday. The shower is a great size and works brilliantly. The room only had one drawback which was not enough socket outlets. Flat screen TV, plenty of pillows, basically everything you could want. Replenished tea, coffee and biscuits each day. The breakfast was self service and great choice for everyone. The hotel looks as though it is still undergoing refurbishment, so it can only get even better! The pool is closed and there are no children's activities so I rated that poor for that reason only. We will without doubt be staying here again. Fantastic!
