“Lovely grand hotel, service and staff were excellent”
Reviewed 8 September 2008

We booked as a last minute special offer, and read a few worrying reviews on tripadvisor afterwards, but we found this hotel excellent.

The lady we spoke to on the phone when booking was extremely friendly and helpful, offering a family room at same rate, and cot for our 2 year old.

We arrived at hotel well before checkin, a lovely grand building, receptionist was very helpful and as our room was ready we put bags straight in, room was massive with lovely high ceilings, and a large immaculately finished and spotlessly clean bathroom.

As others have stated the hotel has a tiny car park, but the road outside is a dead end, so almost no traffic and plenty of space to park free either side, there is also a council carpark also free parking very close by (100ft?) if people prefer off road parking - we parked on the road about 30ft from hotel gate and had no problems.

We swum in the outdoor pool in the afternoon, which was lovely and warm, and very clean, there are no changing rooms but this was no bother to us and our little girl who had a fantastic swim.

Dinner was excellent, with varied choice of food (meat, fish and veg options) and service staff were excellent, they had organised a high chair before we even went for dinner, food was lovely, and wide choice of desserts.

There was a wedding that night, but the music was barely audible from our room, and bed was fantastically comfy so I got to sleep no problem.

Breakfast was excellent, wide choice of cereals, and full english with choice of eggs how you like, and vegetarian option.

Overall I felt this hotel was much nicer than other reviews suggested, maybe we got lucky with our room (154) and staff, but I couldn't fault our stay for the price we paid it is fantastic value and we would go back again without hesitation.

  • Liked — Excellent room, lovely building, nice pool

Went to a wedding reception at The Overmead Hotel, and was not impressed! Luckily when we got the invitatation and phoned to book a room we were told there was a 2 night minimum stay so decided to drive the 3 1/2 hours home instead of staying there for the night. That turned out to be a good move!

The parking is virtually non-existant, and we had to park at the cliff-top car park up the road. This was only a 3-4 minute walk but the rain was horizontal so we arrived at the reception looking like drowned rats!!

There are no baby changing facilities so we were expected to change our 2 year old on the loo floor! Luckily the mother of the bride was staying there and gave us her key every time our son needed a nappy change. Her room was very small and tired looking with the smallest en-suite I have ever seen!

At the meal we asked for a highchair and were told they only had 2 and they were already in use. The manager was completely indifferent to our plight. No apologies for being unable to help us. In the end we had to strap our son into his pushchair where he could barely see above the table. The food was OKish, certainly nothing special. If it was a restaurant I wouldn't go back. No childrens meals were provided and our fussy 2 year old rejected the full size adult meals provided for him. Do they not have sausage and chips in Torquay?!? This would be more suitable for most toddlers who don't want melon and chicken chasseur.

The manager spoke quite rudely to my son when he ran past him in the evening. Quite what he expected of a 2 year old I am not sure. My son is by no means badly behaved but after spending 3 1/2 hours in a car, followed by a church wedding and then wedding breakfast with speeches he was unsurprisingly a little energetic!!

All in all I am glad we drove the 7 hour round trip rather than staying there. The photos on the hotel website are very nice, but the room photos are certainly not a good example of the room I saw. They look like a different hotel. The website also states special rates for children. This must be because they don't really have the facilities for children.

I would never go back!

Stayed here from 2 August for one week with my 77 year old mother on a coach trip. Internet site looked amazing.

Unfortunately the hotel did not match up. Our room (120) was awful. Complained to Manager - hotel full.

Room two floors below Reception level. Dark, depressing, constant smell of damp and dire. Lift did not go go as low as this floor. Bathroom very small - with toilet and shower cubicle both sited on a step. No form of heating in there and hate to think what the smell of damp must be like in winter!

Ticked the days off our calendar so we could return to our home comforts. Total disappointment and could not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Spoke to independent travellers who were also very disappointed including a couple from USA.

Having just returned from a four day stay at the Overmead, i am already checking my diary to see when i can next go back there! I booked over the phone and the young lady i spoke to was extremly helpful. Upon arrival i was immediatly offered porterage and before i had finished checking in the suitcases were in my room! Prompt service or what! My room, well what can i say apart from WOW. I had booked a club room which had fantastic sea views some of the best i've ever seen (and i've been all over the world)! The bedroom and all the reception rooms were extremly clean. The food was of first class cuisine. There was a variety of entertainment offered every evening, something for everyone. On top of all of this the staff are truely amazing. All of them were polite and nothing was to much trouble. I would reccommend this hotel to anyone. My total experince was seocnd to none and the price i paid represented exceptional value for money.

Room with sea view lovely, though the windows frames are in urgent need of replacing which to be honest the hotel is already addressing. Overhaul the room and the hotel itself is fairly good. The service in the restaurant was prompt though the breakfast were'ne up to much and the evening meals were a little limited in choice but again okay.

I have stayed at this hotel before although many years ago, so I was already aware that they took coach parties which is no problem. However and this is where it becomes a delicate subject. There wasd a party of individuals who were staying that required carers (mentally retarted) , i.e. spoon fed at mealtimes etc. Whilst I appreciate that these people are indeed no different to anyone else deserving a holiday, it was distressing and uncomfortable to see people being spoon fed, choking at the table because they cannot chew their food etc. Also bearing in mind that children were present in the dining area who became frightened.

Unfortunately this review will no doubt upset some people but quite honestly after spending over a £1000 for a weeks stay, its not something I wish to see and many others were of the same opinion so beware.

  • Liked — The outside heated pool
  • Disliked — Check in service could have been better taking into account how much your spending there!

We just recently completed a 2 week tour of sights and cities in the UK with our 2 kids (14 and 16 years of age). We stayed in 7 hotels during our vist and all were wonderful except this one. We arrived on a Saturday in the early evening. The hotel was hosting a wedding with a band in the banquet room which was unfortunately located directly below our room. The music was so loud that the floor of our room was vibrating and we could hear the words to every song. We would not have minded this noise if it had stopped at 10:00 p.m. or even 11:00 p.m., but we were told that the band would go till midnight and that there was nothing they could do for us. The hotel was booked and they did not offer to find us another room. So we were sleepless till midnight, which was a bit late for 4 weary travelers. The next day, the manager did not offer any compensation for our discomfort, except perhaps a discount on a future stay (which of course we would never take advantage of). So my recommendation to you is to ask this hotel prior to booking if they are hosting a wedding during your stay, and if so, be sure your room is located a distance from the banquet room.
One other major problem with this hotel was the bathroom. It was ridiculously tiny with a buckling linoleum floor and enough mold in the shower to make penicillin. Truly disgusting. The only good thing I can say about this hotel is that the beds were comfortable, but that was not enough to compensate for the other discomforts.

  • Liked — The beds were comfortable
  • Disliked — The shower was very moldy and the bathroom was very tiny with a buckling floor.

Don't be fooled by the pictures on the internet. Have just spent four days in the most horrible room of any hotel I have stayed in. The furniture is so old and badly scratched, we didn't unpack our bags as we didn't want to put our clothes in the drawers. The quilt on the bed was old and smelly, and the cover was horrendous. They have just replaced the windows which are great but we had a room on the first floor and although there are new heavy drapes, there is nothing else to afford privacy. Early evening getting ready to go out meant we had to shut the drapes completely and the room's lighting was so poor, it was hard to see anything. The bathroom was another story. I have been in better public toilets in England (and that is saying something!). The lino on the floor was black and mouldy and there was an awful smell of damp. Again the lighting was so bad. The bath was very deep but so slim you couldn't move in it. The shower was a trickle at best. There is also only parking for 10 cars at best and having been told there was sufficient parking for all guests, was very disappointed to have to park on a hill half a mile up the road and pray that a coach didn't bump my car every day. The entertainment was rubbish, same old thing every night. Only ate in the restaurant twice, one evening meal and one breakfast. On both occasions thefood arrives very very quickly but sadly it is pre-cooked and luke warm on arrival, and personnally I hate nothing more. By all my whinging you will now know I was bitterly disappointed and certainly wouldn't reccomend it to anyone. By the way, our room was 161 (in case you decides to give it a go - avoid this one!.
