We recently attended this hotel for the first time for a wedding reception and therefore please only take my feedback as a visitor of 3-4hours and not one who has stayed the night or had the full hotel experience.
We had use of the function room on the right as you walk in. It is quite a good sized room but due to the layout with walls etc. It meant that the room felt quite split up.
They had a bar running which was serving a fair range of drinks but they only had 3 bar staff working and they only accepted cash. We felt that due to them holding a wedding reception they would have had around 5 bar staff to keep up with the drink demands always found at receptions. The fact that they only took cash resulted in quite a few unhappy people including our crowd. Luckily someone had £30 cash on them but everyone else only had cards. And the real kick in the teeth was when asking if they offered cash back at the reception or do they have a cash machine on the premises, they just told us we would have to drive to town to the nearest cash machine. (5minutes away and difficult parking)
On a good note, the hotel was clean and tidy and the staff we did speak to seemed friendly.
I do feel they need to step up to the 21st century and have accept card payments. They lost out on a large amount of money due to people not drinking and /or limiting their drinking as they had no cash.

I am sorry that you were not fully happy with your short experience whilst attending an evening function at the hotel. I am surprised that you did not feel that the room is well laid out, many people do like the layout as it does allow the different areas to be used for the food, bar and entertainment aspects of the event.

We do accept card payments at the hotel and I am very sorry if you were not made aware of this.

There are sufficient staff available, although at some points it can become very busy, it would not be possible to have 5 staff serving affectively behind the bar due to the space.

I am glad that you found the staff to be friendly and this is appreciated.

Kind Regards

My Mum and I had a 4 day break at the Headland Hotel as part of a small tour-group (Yarrantons of Eardiston).
The management and staff made us all feel very welcome from start to finish, and made sure that we were all comfortable and catered for throughout the break. All staff were friendly and very helpful.
We stayed in a twin-bed standard room, which was quite small, with a small, newly-refurbished bathroom and a decent sized wardrobe. The room was always cleaned to a high standard, with new towels and tea/coffee/biscuits replenished daily.
Food was of a very good standard, with a different choice on offer every evening. There was also a good choice available at breakfast, and restaurant staff were always very efficient and accommodating.
As the hotel is set up and away from the town in a lovely peaceful area, the complimentary taxi service each day to Torquay centre was very useful and efficient.
There was bingo each night and a variety of different entertainment acts through the week.
My 83 year old mum enjoyed the stay, probably due to the fact that the hotel was very much geared towards the 'older generation'. We would probably stay there again in the future.

It is good to hear that the complimentary taxi was useful and that you also made good use of the varied evening entertainment.

We do hope to be able to look after you again on your next visit to Torquay.

Yours sincerely

Really enjoyed staying at the Headland Hotel. Had some doubts as the price was so reasonable for dinner bed and breakfast but need not have worried. Staff were quietly efficient and the room clean and well equipped. The standard of food in the restaurant really surprised us. It was excellent. We would definitely go back..

Headland by name and by position - a short drive away from the mad hubris that is the centre of Torquay this hotel is a credit to its owner. A substantial building she is spacious and comfortable set in delightfully manicured gardens that cascade down the hillside.. Plenty of places to sit and chat - both inside and outside and there is a small [very] outdoor that is delightfully heated. Its the sort of hotel you know where you are with - prices [very fair] and what happens when - for example set prices if you want to invite friends for breakfast or dinner.. This not for the trendies - more for those of us who appreciate calm, comfort and good service. Dinner bed and breakfast starts from £56 pppn in September There was a real mix of couples, two coach parties [I had my doubts of being overwhelmed but they just blended in with the place], and grandparents with children and their children. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful - bags carried to our room and out to the car when we left - a welcome note when we arrived with information re the hotel and another anticipating checkout, complete with weather forecast!. We upgraded to a club double bed room and it was well worth it - lovely views across the bay enjoyed from the two chairs by our window, a corner room on the first floor with the sun shining in in the morning...[note enormous drop down to ground level from this floor due to high ceilings and lower ground floor bedrooms- don't go up to the second floor overlooking the gardens if you don't like heights although the views are even better]] Our room was traditionally decorated with nice solid wooden furnishings - 10 hangers in the wardrobe and lots of drawer space. Free Wi Fi although I did not use it. It is obvious that the hotel is being updated - good sized flat screen television, modern bedcover and matching curtains.Nice toiletries. The bathroom had a small bath with seat and shower over - the latter was ok but could do with being replaced with something with more oomph at some point, I did struggle slightly to adjust the temperature.. The bed linen was crisp and white - again in the future the bed/mattress needs to be upgraded - although comfortable it was slightly bouncy and squeaked at times. I have to say the room maids were very quick off the mark - I heard them at 8.20 am - slightly early!
We liked
+- the excellent service [note if you want to pause between courses just ask - otherwise they are so efficient you will get through the six "courses" for dinner in a hour. I had a lovely dinner [I have read some criticisms] - I can only say my mussel "soup", sea bass = both delicious,[ with separately served and not over cooked vegetables] , lemon sorbet, fruit roulade, cheese and biscuits, coffee and mints left me feeling well satisfied. Initially I thought the portions were slightly small but considering the number of courses I think they were about right. All washed down with a lovely rose wine. Breakfast is waitress service - not buffet - again there were some nice choices - for example fish and poached egg as well as the traditional English or continental.
+ The hotel offers very reasonably priced packed lunches.
+ A mini bus to take you down to the town centre in the morning and bring you back at tea time - so you can leave your car safely parked up. [hotel has its own car park and the hotel feels safe in its end of road position - not enormous but also roadside parking - the hotel lies at the end of a no through road] - lovely walks beyond on the coastal path and to Meadfoot Beach [gloriously unspoilt and quiet but quite an uphill trek back!}
+linen serviettes for dinner.
+proper china cups on the beverages tray in the bedroom.
+safety window catches that a adjustable, that means they can be fully opened to let in all that lovely sea air

Would we go back - yes absolutely this is a tip top 3 star hotel.
- look on line for their special offers too - they do some great weekend packages - and upgrade if you can.

Room Tip: go for to the top floor bedrooms if you like the views and don't get vertigo - we loved the view...
