“Magic Ball”
Reviewed 15 August 2012

I went to this hotel for a Magic Ball event. The room was very nicely done and could have been used for a wedding, the food was lovely and the magic show was great. The service was not amazing but I knew what this hotel was like anyway, I will certainly be going back again for other events.

Just about to leave the grosvenor hotel and I have loved every second of it! It was everything I had hoped for and more and one of the best and most memorable experiences of my life! After staying in alot of 5star hotels I wasn't expecting the world but the hard working Staff and service was second to none! I have never laughed so much in my life, things aren't perfect but I'd be disappointed if they were! We will defo be back next year! X

Stayed for 2 nights. A trip back to the 70's other than a few 'legally required' extras (smoke detectors etc) installed in a less than simpathetic way, it's 1977 again. My room, bathroom floor tiles so cracked that I had to put the floor mat on the floor having cut my foot once on the tiles. Holes in the walls where things had been removed, wash basin cracked, top of the toilet cracked, bath panel falling to bits. The room was a fair size and clean, clean towels and bedding. TV with only 6 channels, but I suppose it was in colour! Couldn't open the window, as the sash cords had failed, but even so the noise from outside was very intrusive especially at 1 and 4am!

Breakfast was interesting. There is a menu for breakfast, we chose from cereal or grapefruit segments. Cereal, no problem, grapefruit mush was an interesting take on segments! Then asked if we would like the rest of our breakfast, we found that there was NO choice and an 'English breakfast' fry up came, v small egg, chipolata, bacon rasher. It was now that things became bizzare. Mark the manager working his way from table to table. Our turn next, we are in the middle of eating and he then interrupts and informs us that what we are eating is the 'standard' breakfast and as we were staying for more than one night we could 'upgrade' our breakfast for tomorrow, to one with locally sourced Devon produce, large country sausage, bacon , blackpudding, mushroom, eggs etc, etc. This was at an extra cost of £4. Whilst one does not mind paying for something better, why wait to inform your customers and in such a way. 'here's our totally cheap crap version of breakfast but we can do better if you would like'!!!

Other food for main meal, was ish, but the wait between courses was soooooo looong.
We only found out about the cameras when we got there, they are not in all the rooms, but are in the public spaces as are microphones hidden all over. It does make you feel uncomfortable.
The hotel is close to the sea, we could park our car.

There is a great breakfast in the cafe across the road for less than £5 and a Beefeater/Premier Inn, this might be a better option if you are a 21st century dweller.

Room Tip: The premier Inn 200 yrds down the road.

Great hotel, with fantastic atmosphere. The people who work at the hotel are genuinely helpful and really friendly and cannot find fault.
It is very clean and tidy.
Complete value for money for all the family and brilliant for kids.
The evening entertainment is great with loads on to suit everyone, and Mark is the perfect host.
Well done to Mark and his team to making our holiday a brilliant break, and we will definitely be coming here again.

Lets get things straight first this hotel and resort is not suitable for children, teens, babies, friends, family or going solo. This hotel is only suitable for business, the rooms are so dated that you would swear you where back in the 1970s or 80s. You would be lucky to catch the staff on a good mood and have a chat with them, Mark most of the time is embarassing for the hotel with his silly games and the food is awful, they should put food out for you to choose and nt just slap it on a dusty and cracked plate that looks like its been in the cuboard for 2 years or more.

Room Tip: If you want a good room I would go for the most expensive one!

My wife and I live in Torquay (10 minutes walk from the hotel) but we booked because we had a wedding reception and 18th birthday party 2 nights running. We were a little apprehensive because of the TV coverage.
The wedding reception and birthday party were both excellent. The staff were great and all the food was wonderful. Christian, the camp, fake tanned, deputy manager was fantastic. He worked hard, organised everything, was very professional and made sure that everybody had a good time. We would definitely use this hotel for any functions in the future. We also used the steakhouse restaurant which is attached to the hotel. The steaks were fantastic.
Our room had wonderful views of the south devon coast but needed updating urgently.
If you spend any time in the bar/ lounge areas you can not avoid hearing Mark, the owner, talking to the guests (just like in the TV series). This can be very annoying or wonderful depending on your point of view.
As they were starting filming that week-end there were several young TV people constantly moving round the hotel with electronic mics and earpieces like someting out of "Mission Impossible." We found this very distracting.
Some of the guest at the hotel had booked because of the TV coverage. They obviously wanted to be on TV?
The Grosvenor is in a great location near the seafront and is great for families wanting a the beach or swimming pool.
