“Great potential”

Just returned from the Grosevnor where we had a Fri-Mon weekend. We had reservations about this venue due to the TV prog, but we were so very pleasantly surprised by the determination of the staff to give us the best they could. Rooms vary a great deal, but ours was large and roomy. Decor was tired in general, but at this time it was 2 weeks since they had taken over the hotel - and they were having work done all over the place. We will be returning with our dog (they have a couple of suitable rooms and are very dog-friendly), to make it the base for us to see friends in the West Country. Apparently there's another Channel 4 series in January 13, which we'll watch to see if room 24 has had the bedhead light fitting repaired. We can't recommend The Grosevnor high enough for value and above all, friendliness and kindness. Well done all.

Room Tip: Ask the staff to give you the best room for the money - cos that's what youi'll get.

The last throw of the dice for the well televised owner. SAD is the word that comes to mind.
70 of us retired maelots decided to use this hotel for our reunion. The hotel had already been sold to its present owner(Good luck to him ) I hope he has very deep pockets. The Money pit that was the Grosvenor is ripe for demolition. It has obviously suffered from a lack of maintainence for a very long time . The building is deteriorating fast . There is no lift and many structural defects. If the old system of fire certification had been in place the hotel would have been closed a long time ago. However we had a whale of a reunion three nights dinner bed and breakfast with entertainment on all three nights. two nights free bar for one hour.
The staff uncertain about their future treated us well considering their plight.

We arrived at the Hotel on Friday 5th Oct 2012 for our 3 day stay,we booked 2 years before our event.Well before that C4 programme. We were greeted with with "sorry" you can't have the function room for your Gala Dinner on Saturday as a wedding reception had been booked too. Then we were told we could NOT have it on the Friday either as they did not have the 7 round tables we had booked. As the hotel was being sold on the 8th,the owner Mark Jenkins did not give a damn. After Dinner on the Sunday we had a wip round for the (just) THREE girls, they then left and did NOT clear our tables. I found out later that the owner had a party for all his staff, leaving us with just the Barman.

Room Tip: book another hotel.

First impressions didnt bod well - our room in the Gods - up two and a half flights of stairs - (no lift)made access difficult. Room shabby but perfectly clean. Our wardrobe was made for someone over 6ft tall as you needed this to be able to reach the hangers!! Not supposed to be a walk-in but my partner had to hop inside wardrobe to be able to put my clothes on hangers...
Thats the bad bit - the public rooms were bright, tasteful and airey. The food was plentiful and delicious. It was the staff who made this hotel so good - they were efficient, friendly and courteous. The best was our waiter who was fast, but never getting anything wrong - there was no waiting for any food in the dining room, excellent. They also put some good entertaining on during the evening and had a very popular "happy hour" each night for house wines, beers and spirits.

Room Tip: As no lift, not for people with disabilities.

My wife and I arrived on Friday after noon after a 4 hr drive to find the bridal suite that we had pre booked had been given to another guest who decided to extend there stay, what a joke. The hotel is filthy, full of cobwebs and no attention to detail. Stay away

I have just returned from a lomg weekend at the Grosvenor Hotel, this trip was booked some time ago, there were about 40 of us plus the coach driver and tour rep. Yhe diver and rep had to be housed at another hotel as there were no rooms available for them.

The rooms were grubby, wallpaper peeling off the walls, dirty windows and paintwork, on the plus side the bedding was clean. Anyone with mobility problems would have difficulty reaching rooms on the upper floors as there was no lift available, the dining room we used was down a flight of stairs but the stair lift had been dismantled.

The food was below average and for the most part cold and on cold plates, the vegetables were overcooked and looked very unappetising. I have specific dietary requirements but not once was I asked if I needed anything specific, I did asked for "Flora" margarine as I am lactose intolerant but it was never forthcoming, one of our party had to provide her own decaff coffee.

In all honesty the new owners will have an uphill struggle trying to rectify problems and the reputation the hotel has attained.

Just returned from a very long weekend in Torquay staying in the "you know what" hotel featured in the television series, so I went with an open mind. Despite the issues with a double booking with a wedding party, that was put right straight away I hasten to add, the seemingly rapid departure of a manager, the weekend went well. Sure the hotel fabric is now sad, but the cleanliness and food was good but not plentifull at breakfast. I believe that a new owner has come on board and will see what we saw, and that is that refurbishment is a top priority.
The staff go about their business without mumbling and provided a top service.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the bay are best
