“YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR”
Reviewed 16 September 2013

we stayed at the Grosvenor for five days in July, we knew what to expect and went for the experience, there were a few hicups during our stay but this made it more enjoyable as we were expecting nothing less, we were a party of five, we had booked two seaview rooms, the rooms are large but are ready for a re-furb, the room we stayed in was old and had a constant smell of damp which we got used to, outside on the landing there was a champagne bucket collecting the rain which was coming through the ceiling which was quite funny, the grounds are very nice the service was ok elaina on reception is a credit as any issues we had were dealt with very quickly and nothing was ever too much trouble, the breakfast are ok but ours always came out with something missing off the plate this happened on every day but they were quick to rectify the problem, this hasnt put us off and we will definatly return next year for another fun experience..

After reading other people's reviews I got quiet worried,! We arrived a couple hours before check in and the staff where friendly and helpful we sorted all the paper work then just had to pick up are keys later but made sure house keeping made are rooms priority! Once we did go up to ours rooms we had 3 we where expecting the worst but we must have had refurb rooms all though the bedroom had been done there was still old fashioned furniture but the bed was so comfortable are bathroom needed a bit of TLC few cracked wall tiles and general wear and tear! We had a couple of drinks in the bar while waiting for friends which was reasonably priced and very well decorated just had one problem my glass was dirty ( someone else's lipstick) my partner took it back and they couldn't have been more sorry and got a new one straight away once all the building work is done its going to be amazing from what you can see has been done already

Room Tip: We had rooms 16 17 19

Having just returned from the grosvenor, you can see how much this hotel is changing daily!! Just from what i whitnessed during my stay when this hotel is complete its going to be FANTASTIC!!
the facilities are great, indoor swimming pool which we used before breakfast to wake ours selfs up, was lovely and warm! breakfast was great, fast service & all polite. when we arrived we arrived at mid day (we know check in isnt until 3 but thought we would see on the off chance if our room was ready) a lovely lady called farah checked us in lovely warm welcome, very polite, such a kind young lady, so helpful and always smiling 5* service for reception. She let us check in when we arrived as the room was ready! Fantastic!! lounge bar was great for enteratinment bar prices quite expensive the lady on the bar (didnt get your name sorry) was very friendly & helpful also!!
we will return 100% when all the re-furbishment is complete but at the moment it is the staff that make this hotel! the owner has a great team on there hands!!

Room Tip: We've been told room 2 is the best room as its been completely re-furbished!! i would advise thi...

Dear Sir, many thanks for your lovely comments in reference to your stay, Farrah the young lady who met you at reception does indeed exemplify the good work from all the staff in providing a wonderful and warming arrival and the fact she stood out for you was very impressive. The indoor pool has now been totally revamped and is warm and even more enticing.
We are very proud of our achievement to date and thank you once again in acknowledging our efforts. Daryl and the team.

I booked two nights for £49 each they should have been £119 thank god I didn't pay that !! Rooms were poor the window was held up with a book. Then the next day fixed with a wood block this meant we couldn't shut the window we slept on top of the covers because the mattress was horrendous taps leaked in bathroom and toilet only flushed when it was left a while this then made the worst noise ever.
Breakfast was disorganised but the staff really tried there best,
I really felt for the staff as they were trying to hold it together with no real leadership from anyone.
The meal at the inn was the saving grace absolutly beautiful and the service was excellent.
I have to agree the hotel needs to close for the refurb as there is far to much to do !!!
I would like to visit again once this is in place.

Dear Sir, thank you for the comments regarding your stay for 2 nights and I can assure you that the refurbishment has finally subsided leaving us with a restful hotel. I am sorry that it disrupted your visit in any way and I would welcome a return visit to show you the progression to date .i was pleased to see you enjoyed the food in the hotel and we are working very hard to increase the quality even more, as we speak.
Thank you once again, Daryl and his team.

i arrived at the grosvenor on the 19th august 2013,
we went out and came back to the room late afternoon,
as i walked into the room, a man carrying a saw was climbing into
the room through the window, then followed by another man.
they said they were working in the room next door and for some reason couldnt
get out the way they went in there ?.
i went and told reception, who said they would look into it,
later on that evening another member of staff said it must of been a burglar as
there maintenance staff would not enter somebodys room through a window uninvited.
but for the remainder of my stay there, i saw the same person who climbed into my room,
was working at the hotel.
the room was very shaby and needed a complete revamp.
on a plus point, the staff were very friendly

After reading some reviews we were in two minds to cancel. The building itself is old and obviously creates many challenges to the owners. Refurbishment is ongoing and rooms have been let out when not totaly finished. There is still a lot to do here and it is going to take time.
The staff were very helpful and with booking issues at check in these were quickly put right. The hotel was fully booked at the time too. All businesses have problems and challenges and to my mind it is how these are put right that gives a measure of how well run the business is. The building will continue to be a challenge but if the staff continue with the right frame of mind then this place does stand a chance - without it, it is sunk!!
We had a pleasant room overlooking the bowling green and sea, recently refurbed but sadly not totaly finished. Staff at reception, the bar and breakfast were helpful and happy.
Overall we were glad we kept the booking as the location was perfect for the seafront and the town and the staff were good. The outside pool area was also very pleasant along with the gardens.
I hope the refurb is finished to a standard that befits the building and location. Wll be interesting to see for next season (?).

Room Tip: The refurbed rooms are OK and with a sea view a bonus.

My husband and I chose this hotel because their website showed such lovely rooms and we wanted to treat ourselves to a bit of luxury for my birthday - just like to add that it wasn't the cheapest. How disillusioned we were. The room, no. 40, was disgusting. The room had not been updated in years. The carpet was badly faded with stains where previous occupants over the years had dripped their drinks. There were two bedroom chairs that were supposed to be pink but were black with dirt and the bath was black at the bottom where the enamel had worn away. We told the receptionist that we could not stay there but as we had relatives staying at our house we stayed one night instead of the three we booked. We had to pay £69 for the one night but got the other two nights refunded, these would have been £99 per night because of the Bank holiday - what a ripoff even at the lower price. My advise is don't go anywhere near it it is disgusting and should be shutdown until they can refurbish to a much higher standard. Won't be visiting Torquay again if that is the standard we can expect.

Room Tip: Not sure that there is one at this hotel
