“Elegance and Service”
Reviewed 22 February 2014 via mobile

The decor and the staff's attention to detail made me feel as if I had been transported to a luxurious hotel a century ago. Breakfast was plentiful and varied. The four course dinners were delicious and included vegetarian options. I enjoyed sitting by a roaring fire sipping coffee afterwards, too. The room was small, the bed a bit hard, and the street a touch noisy, but the view of the ocean was lovely.

The free wifi worked only intermittently from the room, but always from the lobby. The staff are attentive and flexible at all hours, even overnight. The facilities included several dining/tea rooms and a large ballroom with excellent wooden floor. The entire hotel is nonsmoking.

We had a two night stay and apart from the hardest mattress we have ever slept on our stay was faultless. The service we received was exlemplery. The food was first class and both the room we stayed in and the hotel itself was spotless. We look forward to returning to the Livermead House Hotel ,where customers are treated to old fashioned service and hospitality.A rare gift in this day and age.

We stayed here just before Christmas for one night and had lunch, dinner, and breakfast. The public areas of the hotel were nicely decorated and well maintained, but the bedroom was very basic. A hard lumpy mattress, no mirror over the dressing table, missing light bulbs, and a wardrobe door off its slider. On the other hand, for lunch and dinner the restaurant was full and offered an extensive menu, but orders were taken efficiently and the food was of good quality and promptly served. At breakfast there was a buffet for cold items, but hot items had to be ordered. Nevertheless, they arrived very quickly and were of very good quality compared to most hotel breakfasts.

Room Tip: Apparently the single rooms are very cramped. Best to have a room with a sea view, and one on a high...

Oh dear oh dear oh dear. I have stayed in many hotels around the world - from 7* in Dubai to simple B&Bs and this was quite simply the worst place I have had to lay my head.
The exterior is pretty with a blue plaque announcing that Charles Kingsley, author of The Water Babies used to live here.
Everything and I mean everything about this hotel is tired. From the over decorated entrance, where every surface had frills or tassels, flowery carpets, heavy yellow brocade in the dining room to out of date magazines presumably from when the hotel was 'decent' back in 1999.
The crockery service in the dining room would not look out of place on a 1970s table, and given the way the leaf pattern was rubbed away in some places, it probably did date from 1970. The cups and saucers on the tray in the bedroom did not even match.
We only ate 2 breakfasts there - my scrambled eggs on toast was inedible. It appeared that it had been kept under a hot lamp for some times, as the toast was burnt to a crisp round the edges, and the egg had an unappetising skin. The next day whilst the fried egg was nice, the sausage was of such poor quality that it just oozed fat. The rounds of toast was still resembling bread and had to be sent back.
The hotel appeared to have just 4 other guests, the week before Christmas, and I think we were given one of the worst rooms. Very small, dirty un-vacuumed carpet, and an outlook to a brick wall. The mattresses were so old that there was no support at all and you just sank into them. Worse still was that they were covered in a nylon bedcover and had sheets and blankets. I shudder to think how many dirty fingers and hands have touched those blankets, or how many naked bodies have sat on them. Ugh.
Given the demographic of the hotel I am also very surprised about the high sided bath, with shower over, as opposed to a walk in shower. The toilet handle hung down making it very difficult to flush. The hairdryer did not work.
We settled down to watch TV; and this didn't work as BBC1 kept 'rebooting' every 2 minutes making it unwatchable. We gave up and went to the bar.....
En route it was obvious that every wall, door and table was dented, dinged, bashed and scratched. The flouncy frilly lampshades were missing light bulbs. The fake flowers looked droopy and dead. The bar was empty. A lonely barmaid chopped lemons in the hope that someone would ask for a G&T....
There was free wifi but this only appeared to work in the bar area and did not work in the bedroom.
The Hotel Inspector would love to get her hands on this place...... It really is unacceptable that such a place is open in this day and age. It needs millions spending on it to bring it up to date.

The Livermead House Hotel, Sea Front, Torquay, is highly recommended by me and I’m sure by most of the lucky people who stay there. The food is really outstanding and there is a very comprehensive menu appealing to all tastes. The first floor is tastefully decorated and large portraits of Lord Livermead (or whoever it is) and his forbidding-looking wife stand guard one each side of the pleasant roaring fire in one of the cosy lounges. Indeed, I imagine it is portraits of their relatives and ancestors that decorate the place in many parts of the hotel and they add dignity and the appearance of permanence to the place.

Bedrooms are important and ours was small but really of ample size for our needs. Three of my criteria for hotel bedroom requirements were ticked: two arm chairs, not just one as in some hotels and central lighting bright enough to read by. There was also a coat hook on the door, unsuitable for dwarfs but reachable by my wife and me. Unfortunately the radiator was small for the size of the room and some friends of ours said that in consequence their room was cold.

The bathroom again ticked most of my boxes. My chief complaint about hotel bathrooms is the lack of both shelf space and towel rails and here there was certainly a lack of both of these items. There were no towel rails as such although the top of the mini-radiator could be used but it would not hold all the four towels we were given. Unfortunately the one and only shelf was the small glass type, beloved of hotels, and mounted just above the basin so that on washing one’s face there is a danger of hitting the head.

The shower was a revelation and quite the best I have ever seen. Instead of having complicated controls, which generally result in one being either scalded or frozen, this had a simple volume control and a straightforward scale that enables you to chose the water temperature. Unfortunately this design did not appear to be universal in the hotel, our friends had a different and more complicated one that did not appeal to them.

Evening entertainment was good and, since my wife and I went with our dance group, we were pleased with the fact that we had dancing on all three nights of our stay.

Don’t let my few niggles put you off, you will enjoy your stay at the Livermead House Hotel, and if you can just go there for a meal you will be amply rewarded.

This was a lovely stay, the staff were great as was the food and surroundings. I loved the decor, although in places a bit tired, it added to its charm.
I've stayed at many places for short breaks , but this one by far has been the best, will be coming back!

Room Tip: for a short break I wouldn't pay fora superior room as the room met our needs well.
