booked through majestic tours (excellent company) on a cheap 4 night break ( 2 people for £138half board). Food good and varied menu, entertainment good.
Allocated rom 31 in front of building which overlloked busy road, noise was a problem partly due to a newish window which was badly fitted. The room was clean and neat but was let down by the mattresses which were more tired than we were, bedding was clean but in need of repair / replacement.
All staff polite, friendly and helpful.
All in all pretty good and would consider staying there again

I have been staying at the Bancourt now on and off for 4 years for both business and Pleasure. The entertainment is great Lisa Winwood and Chris Chaplin are not to be missed. Food in the restaurant was excellent, the service at the bar was second to none. I have been going to Torquay now for 33 years and had been always staying at another hotel in the town until I found The Bancourt. Now I always stay there or if they are busy stay in the overfill hotel next door. I have recommend the Bancourt to all my friends and Family.

At the time of my visit, the exterior of the hotel was being renovated, so there was a bit of mess and disaray outside. The hotel is located up the hill from the front, which is about 15 min's walk, likewise to the town. Not as close as you might think. The road outside is quite busy.

The hotel has a good sized bar and ballroom, with entertainment most nights. Beer includes the infamous Double Diamond - what a find! The dining room is spacious, but suffers from rather a sickening odour, which you won't notice after a few minutes. Portions are good and there is a large choice of dishes, with daily specials.

My room must have been recently decorated and I have no complaint about that. The hotel building is old and allowance must be made for snaking coridors, etc., but which give it charactor. Staff are very friendly, as is the owner who was about most of the time.

On walking up to reception you won't want to touch the hand rail as it is sticky and fithy, carpet dirty. On entering our first room, it sadly needed decorating. I would not even get in to the shower - glass doors dirty and mould. Had to ask for a bath mat which, they insisted was in the room - I wasn't blind!!! Ceiling marked and cracked, doors marked with hand and finger prints. We asked to change rooms on the second day and were taken to room 5, where we threw in our luggage as we were going out and it appeared better decorated. On returning to the hotel in the evening, the smell outside the room ( which was in the basement), smelled like cats P. On closer inspection of the room, black mold on the tiles in the bathroom, broken handle on the window - which was the fire escape, torn wallpaper, knob from the end of the curtain rail on the floor.Had to ask again for a bath mat, complained about the smell and reception staff said it was ok last week. I asked the manager what he thought was causing the smell and he said it certainly wasn't cat's P, but admitted it did smell. Didn't seem all that interested in rectifying it. The floor tiles outside the room were badly stained - must have had water damage. At bed time, the room smelled damp and our pillows and the bed felt damp. It was a disgusting hotel. If you wanted a remote control for the TV you had to pay a £10 deposit. The only pleasant things in the hotel, is the staff, who are friendly, but must be blind and have no sense of smell and the door out. We left a day early although our room was paid for another night. No one asked why we were leaving early.

pleasant, polite and attentive staff, food very good, restaurant service very good apart from breakfast on our last morning, think they forgot about our table and we were last to be served after waiting half an hour, otherwise no complaints, good all round entertainment each evening, approx 20-30 min walk to town centre, i got a taxi with my family which cost a fiver, town centre is lovely, plenty to see and do, large variety of shops, restaurants and bars. Looking forward to going on the next trip to this destination

Room we shared was spacious, clean and bright with a large en-suite bathroom. We did have a problem with the shower but this was fixed immediatley without a fuss. The restuarant's menu was wide and varied with a different 'roast' offered daily however the service was often very slow and chaotic, further staff training would help.

I totally disagree with many of the bad reviews on here. We stayed for 4 days (3 nights) with 2 10 year olds and a disabled lady. On arrival the staff were waiting to greet us, very polite and friendly welcome. Told to leave our bags by reception and they would be taken to our rooms for us. When checked in my parents room was in the basement area of the hotel and although it did smell of damp it was quite pleasent. However, because my Mum is disabled we asked for a room change to the ground floor as she struggled with the stairs. We were given an alternative room immediately and staff even came to the room to move all luggage for us - great service! Food was VERY good, waiting staff pleasent and very helpful with any queries you have. Although very small the children LOVED the pool. Outside area is really nice and relaxing. Entertainment on the 1st 2 nights was so funny - but only because it was so bad! No fault of the owners, just bad singers with even worse jokes. Entertainment on 3rd night was FANTASTIC!!!!! Someone has said the drinks are expensive in the bar, but they are the same as the local pubs: £3.50 a pint, Wine £3.50 large glass, glass of coke £1.20. Overall the staff go out of their way to ensure you have an enjoyable stay.
