very friendly staff, nice clean room, and modern. Breakfast was yummy. so close to harbour, shops, everything. for parking you pay20£ for a card, in a car park up the road , but get your money back when you go really gd.because parking in torquay is a nightmare. you pay everywhere.we stayed for two nights in middle of august.

I shall not be coming back to hotel Hudson again. The hotel was dirty with cobwebs everywhere and it smelt strongly of damp! The breakfast was average! Parking is at the back of the hotel after you've climbed some steep steps (quite dangerous) but there is only space for three cars to park there unless you're given a permit to a seperate carpark which is quite a walk with heavy lugage! Overall hotel hudson was a huge disapointment and it is definitely NOT worth 4 stars!

This review looks very much like another member of the family that stayed here recently as per previous review headed "very poor customer service etc etc".....May I ask who the hotel inspector is, if its Mrs Polizi I would like to have a word with her!!

We booked the hotel on Booking.com as we saw it was "gay friendly". It proved to be an excellent choice. The proprietor (Brian) was very welcoming, the room was comfortable spacious and above all comfortable and clean. Breakfast could not be faulted. Above all excellent but beware the steps up to the hotel are difficult and there is not a hand rail all the way. Also there is no lift in the hotel. If you enjoy mountaineering an excellent choice - so close to the centre and parking is easily arranged

Do not be misled by this hotel's star rating and the on-line photos - hotel in need of maintenance both inside and outside. Very strong smell of damp and evidence of this on walls in hallway , cleaning in this hotel is not top priority with cobwebs and spider nests apparent in hallway/ landing and the rooms we stayed in.
Parking poor and access to this very steep and narrow.
However, most important point on why not to stay at this hotel is the owner's verbally threatening behaviour when a concern was raised upon departing - completely inappropriate and unacceptable!!!!!!!

I was most disappointed to read the guests comments in regard to her recent stay which are in stark contrast to previous reviews received from other guests but even more surprised that no mention was made of the main problem she encountered during her stay, so if I may, I will deal with that first.

The guest concerned had made a reservation on behalf of 4 persons and herself (total 5 persons). The booking consisted of 2 double bedrooms and 1 single room all en-suite being reserved through a booking agency. When the guest checked in she subsquently advised me a short time later that she did not require the single room and that she should immediately be given a full refund of fees paid for that room despite the 48 hours guest's house cancellation policy which was in force as common with all other establishments. This policy is quite clearly shown on the ortiginal booking agency contract and also on the hotels website. On this basis I could not agree at that time to the fees being refunded. I did however advise her that if the single room could be re-let during the course of her stay, then a full refund of fee would be given but regretfully that failed to materialise.

As far as the points she has raised, I will deal with them as follows:

In regard to need of maintenance inside and out this is not borne out with other guests reviews.

With regard to parking, there is one garunteed car park space per room which in her case would have been THREE SPACES; I fail to understand what the guest meant when she said the parking was poor !!!

This establishment is 4 star guest house accommodation and not a 4 star hotel as the reviewer implies.

At the time of checking out, the guest raised the point again concerning the refund of accommodation fees to which I replied regretfully that a refund would not be possible on which she became annoyed and wanted to continue the argument about this matter. I then suggested she refer the matter to the booking agency where the original booking was made and because of what I said she seemed to get more and more agitated which at that point I asked her to leave. The guest subsquently took my advice and contacted the booking agency concerned whereupon they contacted me and agreed with me that the right course of action had been taken and her case had been handled in a correct way.

On arrival, a member of staff carried our cases upstairs (we were on the top floor). This was excellent customer service from arrival and this continued for the remainder of our stay. The location was excellent. only minutes from the town centre. The room was a good size, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was good - (excellent real coffee and the option to ask for whatever you want as part of the cooked breakfast), The only disappointment (and a small one) was the bar, which had no atmosphere or much choice of beverages.
In town, I would recommend The Devon Arms - a family owned pub which was very friendly and did a good standard of food.
Overall I would strongly recommend this guest house to anyone who wants to visit Torbay.

Room Tip: The room on the top floor was a good size, but if you have trouble with stairs ask for a ground floo...

Great location with just a few minutes walk to the harbour. Free car parking and Wi Fi. The room was nice with a great cooked breakfast. I tried the smoked salmon & scrambled eggs which were delicious. Very impressed thanks Brian.
