A group of 16 of us stayed for a week-end break at this hotel. Nothing but praise for it. Staff friendly and accommodating yet professional. Food excellent. A 2 star hotel with loads of 5 star attitude. No problem in recommending this to anyone and we would stay here again. Bedrooms are slightly on the small side but then you only sleep in the bedroom and there is plenty of room in the drawing room and bar to relax and meet with friends. Some of our party commented that they had paid more, in other hotels, for a lot less.

I only stayed here for 2 nights on a business trip. The Balmoral does exactly what it says on the tin but with the homeliness and friendliness to be competitive in the vast market of hotels in Torquay. The food was of a good quality and well prepared, overall of an excellent standard. I didn’t spend much time in my room but it was perfectly fine considering what I paid for it. I made use of the warm and comfortable lounge with free Wi-Fi. This was excellent for answering my emails and peaceful enough to get some work done. If I find myself with some free time I shall hopefully be returning.

Room Tip: Realise that you get what you pay for.... in this case a very good hotel with value for money.

Having read the last 2 posts about staying at The Hotel Balmoral for New Year we can identify with both views. Yes, our room was small and the hot water did take time off on occasions but you cannot fault the cleanliness and the friendly staff. As to the food, the chef and his team do, indeed, deserve very high praise. The dinners and the full English breakfasts were outstanding; the soups (yes, 2 soups in one bowl) on New Year’s Eve was culinary art in its highest form. One criticism about the dinner on NYE was that there was too much, too quickly, we would have liked to have a bit more time between courses and we might even have made it to the Cheese Board! Another point to note for the management perhaps, was not publishing/displaying the menu before the meal; we had been told it was a set menu for NYE but luckily my wife asked what the main course was that morning and was able to swap the beef main course for fillet of Sea Bass (line caught by the chef himself that morning!) but other diners were turning away courses they first saw as it was put in front of them. Indeed, a bit more training of the waiting staff is required too as they weren’t sure themselves what the dishes were (we had 2 different descriptions of the soups for example!). First class food aside, the overall NY package, with the entertainment/fireworks/ buffets/quiz was excellent and great value for money.

The Hotel Balmoral is rated as a 2 Star but the room was really the only 2 Star bit; overall I would give it 3 Stars but, without doubt, the food is at least 4 Star. A very pleasant stay; would we return? Probably not.

Room Tip: Do pay extra for the bigeer rooms.

Unbelieveable incompetence. A party of six of us booked rooms for this new year when we left last new year. Deposits all paid last January. When we arrived we were given rooms we had not booked with no explanation or apology. In a nutshell my room pre booked with a bath etc for the wife turned out to be a small single sized room with a double bed squeezed in. Totally unsuitable with no room to even properly unpack. So between six of us we didn't even have access to a bath, appaling in this day and age. Normal circumstances dictate that the day before new year we were not in a position to walk out and get other accomodation. Having customers 'over a barrel' is not the way to run a business and the juvenile management should take note of this. Adding insult to injury hot water was on a 'first come first served' basis and one night we had to boil the room kettle to wash. Hotels and management attitude like this have had their day, there is plenty of competition in Torquay for our hard earned cash and certainly six customers will be going elsewhere in future.

Room Tip: Avoid cell 10, and 21

Have stayed at this hotel many times but this was the first time at New Year. Fantastic weekend, food was absolutely out of this world, compliments to the Chef, don't lose him. Entertainment was good as was the company of the other residents. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Town walking distance alhtough hilly if you want to walk back, but there is a bus that stops right outside the hotel. Hotel is always clean. This is an excellent hotel whether for a few days or a weeks holiday.

Room Tip: Although you pay a little more ask for one of the larger rooms, they have a bath and shower plus mor...

We loved the food and the room was fairly spacious and very clean with good fittings and fixtures although bathroom compact water was hot and shower was large, bed was comfy. Town was walking distace and not far away as where most ameneties. Really good scenery around this area and we took the great costal path recomended at reception was ace and we needed a good walk after all the grub we ate. food fantasic, especialy considering my wife has a gluten intolerance which they easily catered for. The value here is unbeatable in our opinion comapred to hotels we usually stay in, i would definatly stay here again and will be booking another weekend break next year.
