How can they provide such good quality accommodation and food at these prices? We were most impressed with the newly refurbished rooms and the range and quality of the five course dinners. The staff were friendly and helpful and we would thoroughly recommend this for a short break or indeed a longer holiday. And another bonus for us - no kids - peaceful heaven.

We' ve just returned from the Balmoral after a short weekend break, we were after a cheap break in a comfortable place , and thats what we got ,the food was more than adequate, the entertainment pleasant, and our accomodation was comfortable and clean with everthing we needed. The bar prices at the hotel were reasonable, and the staff friendly and curtious, Robbie the waiter is a star!! he is proffesional, hard working and thinks of everthing, if I ever start a hotel I'd like him to join my staff!!
We will certainly go again, and to me thats what defines a good hotel,

Small, friendly, high quality food and just a leisurely two-minute stroll to the ruggedly beautiful Meadfoot beach which is surrounded on three sides by cliffs and wooded areas: a delight.
The rooms, bearing in mind this is a two-star hotel , are, in the main, small(ish), as are the ensuite bathrooms but they are comfortable and very clean. We were lucky and had a sea view so what the rooms without a sea view were like we could only judge by what other guests told us and it would appear that they too were comfortable and clean. And the hotel grounds are in very good order.
We went early season and the hotel was under half-full but we met a couple who had previously been at the hotel in the busy month of July and they said the food and service was just as good off-peak as at the height of the season. Talking about the food; how the hotel produces such marvellous food at the very competitive DB&B tariffs they charge is beyond me.
A good number of the guests were making at least their second visit to the hotel and a number of them said they would be back again. The only slight downside is the space for car parking - plenty of space for March but might be a problem at the height of the season when all 25 rooms are likely to be filled.
For walkers, the hotel is very close to the South West Coastal path. All-in-all a very enjoyable hotel and there is a very good chance we will be back..

Once again my wife and I stayed at this fabulous little hotel. Where the staff are very accommodating friendly and helpful. Okay it's not 5 star, having said that you are not paying 5 star prices. It's clean and very close to Meadfoot beach and 5 minutes drive into Torquay main area.
My wife and I are still amazed as to how they can serve up what they do for the money you pay. Value for money i'ts second to none. We will defiantly be returning to this hotel later in the year. As for being met by a barking dog in reception, the dog is a little white terrier and he's gorgeous. Some people need to get a life.
My only regret is that having got caught up in a conversation, I forgot to leave a tip for the excellent service we had.

What a shame you had such an unfortunate experience. You have only got to read the reviews below to see that you missed out! We have visited The Hotel Balmoral on six occasions and always been well pleased with the room, staff and especially the food. Perhaps they didn't have an alternative room available to offer you. Steve (the co-owner);Alex and the rest of the staff cannot do enough to make you feel at home. We've had great times in the bar with interesting company from many professional backgrounds. Our advice to future visitors is Book It - you won't be disappointed.

Booked a weekend break at this hotel after looking at their website. warning,! the website does not give a true indication of the quality of this hotel. On entering the reception we were greeted by a barking dog and then had to wait for five minutes for anyone to appear. The reception in my opinion was unfriendly to say the least and we were then told where to find our room and left to it. On entering the room (no.4) first impressions were not good, small, cold, dirty old fashioned furniture and decor. The en- suite shower room small and cold with a dirty carpet.I tried to turn up the heating only to find that it was on maximum already though the radiator was barely luke warm.I then sat on the bed and which creaked the matress nearly touched the floor,(very well worn would be a good description of the bed). It was at this point that we decided that this was not a place that we wanted to stay in. On finding the man on reception i explained my reasons for not wishing to stay in the hotel and that the website had not given a true picture of the standard of accommodation. His reply was sharp and rude and he said that there is nothing wrong with the room. We were not offered another room though my guess is that they are all of a similar standard.Take my advice, stay away! We found an alternative hotel close by that was friendly, clean and warm for a similar price.
