“Works outing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 December 2010

A group of 12 of us stayed at the end of November on a weekend offer break. The Hotel is not bad for the price and for a 2 star hotel it was good. I can see where people previously have stated that its clicky, as you are expected to know some of the format of what goes on, like at meal time. We stayed a week into the cold spell, there was some confusion over our party as all the rooms had been put down under one name, although a list with each persons requirements was sent with the booking, but this was all sorted very quickly. The rooms were ok and the food was better on the Saturday night, as was the entertainment. I would visit again, but probably in the warmer weather when the surrounding area had more to offer.

Stayed for 4 days Food was excellent. service friendly but inconsistent. insufficient seating in lounge area when hotel is busy. room very small had to breath in when walking round the bed. Shower room only but it could do with a proper screen instead of a curtain as water tended to overspill onto carpet. We did find it very strange ringing the bell for service at the bar but soon got used to it.
Will return here as it is clean and in an excellent location. OVERALL GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY

just returned from weekend stay, been many times before, cannot understand the negative reviews for this hotel, yes it is a bit jaded, but it is a busy hotel,so what would you expect, staff are polite and friendly, food is excellent and entertainment is enjoyable, cleanliness is very good with none of the usual dust around the edges ,as found in so many hotel rooms throughout the world.
some rooms are better than others,we have a favorite room which we try to book.
will keep returning for our twice a year breaks.

Just returned (early) from a trip to this hotel, we were extremely disappointed with our room (no 25) which was so dark we had to keep the lights on all day. It only had a tiny window which over looked a wall. The floorboards creaked and groaned with every movement and the 'en-suite' complete with pink bath and tiles! had no window or radiator and was tiny. The decor was seriously outdated and in need of a complete make over.
The food was ok, but not of the standard the brochure led us to believe. The one redeeming feature was the staff, with the exception of the receptionist who checked us in. She was not welcoming and other guests told us they were scared to ring the bell in the bar because she had moaned about serving them earlier. Her aside, the rest of the staff couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating so well done to them.
We won't be returning to this hotel but will be returning to Torquay.

we recently stayed at the balmoral and found it very cosy, comfy, and met all our needs the room was cleaned every day the food was excellent and the staff were brilliant. the towels were changed every day we could park with ease the food was plentiful and we were treated like royalty our friends stayed in a room on the ground floor which was perfect for thier needs, we would recommend the hotel to anyone it was a gem on the edge of torquay near to the town and beach lovely and quiet we would have thought it was worthy of more than the 2 star rating. visit ato come againnd try it and you will want

This was our first visit to the Balmoral, and we were very happy with what we found. The room, although small, was clean, comfortable and had all we needed. The food was extremely good with a good choice available. Overall the hotel was comfortable, homely and nicely decorated. The staff were friendly and helpful, top marks to Simon who looked after us in the dining room. The position near Meadfoot beach was an extra bonus. We would be happy to recommend the Balmoral to any of our friends and family.

We went with friends. the hotel was very clean, although very outdated. but then most of the other residents were of the era and as they obviously keep returning it must suit them well and make them feel at home!
our room was very basic an quite small but had a sea view as promised and was clean and well serviced for basic 2** as advertised. Next time i'll take my own towels as theirs were very thin and tending towards hand towel size anyway.
Food was hot, served fast and cooked nicely. Don't expect gourmet cuisine here - but you are not paying gourmet prices so what do you expect? Service was excellent. Mr Robbie is a feature of the Balmoral and once you get over the Fawlty Towers similarity you can appreciate his attentions and just enjoy!! How many times he changed his shirt during service can easily become a betting game if you get in the right frame of mind!
We slept well, we ate till we were stuffed, we drank well [no extorsionate bar prices and they were very happy to serve our own champagne at a very reasonable corkage charge]
and the whole weekend cost us less than one night's stay elsewhere. Just up from the town, near enough for the taxi fare to be less than a fiver, not so near that we were disturbed - Top shout all round!
