Its tough to get a place to stay when there are 7 guys in your group, the Richmond was fine with us. I was told over the phone that we could check in at 2pm, upon arrival it would be 4pm, was'nt impressed. The location is pretty good, we could walk into the town centre in about 20-30 minutes. Also we got bed and breakfast for only £30 pppn which is a great deal. The hotel was fine, breakfast again was just fine. My room was a bit dated with a few carpet stains and it took forever to get the shower temperature right without burning myself. The bed was quite comfortable, the info in my room said that an iron and board was available, I asked at the desk and they said there wasnt said items (take your own iron) generally the hotel was fine, no complaints from my friends so upon that I would recommend this hotel and to save searching around if I returned to Torquay I would stay there again.

We only stayed 1 night (Saturday). Rules and regulations abound in this hotel - the nicest thing was the decking out back - it was so hot in the hotel. We stayed in a room overlooking a fire escape - the window had a screw nailed in to stop you opening it. The bathroom - although a good size left a lot to be desired. The valance on my bed was dirty - thankfully the bed linen was clean. We were in room 17 - try to avoid - next to it is the thoroughfare to all the other rooms - very noisy. We met a gentleman who was a regular visitor - he told us that he has a room with a balcony and a view - wish we'd had one - he loved it. There was a lady singing (I describe the term loosely) although the other guests appeared to be having a good time. Didn't have much to do with the staff, although I agree with other reviewer about the receptionist - she was going to recite a list of does and don'ts to us - but I told her we'd already heard - her telling the guests in front of us who were booking in. Breakfast was okay - although shot glasses were provided for the juices.

Booked at the last minute and got what was available. Big mistake. The room we had was horrendous. The door creaked, the floorboards creaked, the view was of an old fire escape and our room was above the kitchens. The old sash window opened about 9 inches and the heat was unbearable. Kitchen staff congregate downstairs under the window and we could hear everything including a lot of banging and crashing. The furnishings were shabby, worn and dismal.

Sitting out on the sun deck we looked longingly at the upper rooms with private balcony and opening windows.

We asked for a fan but were told there wasn't one so we bought our own to make the room bearable. We also oiled the creaking door.

Don't expect a parking space or even to park in the road near the hotel. It's mostly double yellow lines.

Dining room down steep stairs next to swimming pool and smelt musty. Breakfast was adequate. I'm happy with cereal and toast but ordered the full English too and gave most of it to hubby, giving him a man-size breakfast. We had no complaints about the service which was pretty slick even when fully booked. Only had B&B so can't comment on evening meals.

Make sure you get a refurbished room with balcony and view and you'd probably be quite happy. The room we had should be put out of service.

Staff were chatty and friendly and we managed to enjoy Devon despite the room.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in Sept 08 with our 2 young children. Initially I was wary as had read some disappointing reviews but was really pleased when we arrived. We arrived before check in time and managed to get a parking space in the small car park (limited parking), the staff were friendly and helpful and nothing seemed too much effort. We were easily able to walk into the town centre and sea front even with a toddler in a pushchair and a 3 year old. Our room was spacious (double bed, single bed plus travel cot) and it was one of the newly re-furbished rooms with a balcony overlooking Torbay. The room was clean and comfortable although being up 3 flights of stairs wasn't ideal!! There was a lift but this was broken on one occasion which was inconvenient with 2 young children. We only used the restaurant for breakfast. This was fine and the staff were friendly, only comment here would be the use of shot glasses for the orange juice!!
We did use the swimming pool although we did find it quite cold - the kids didn't seem to mind though!
All in all a good value hotel. The only drawbacks were that not all rooms have been refurbished to such a high standard, the pool needs to be slightly warmer and there is limited parking but it's proximity to the beach and town make the Richmond a great choice when visiting Torquay

On arrival we were given tea and coffee and the appearance of friendly good service - what we actually got was complete chaos with staff running round like headless chickens trying to give room keys to everyone (40). Rooms were satisfactory but bathroom very poor, dirty carpet, no safety rails and no shelves for toiletries. Service poor we had to ask three times for extra pillows and when we asked for food off the advertised bar menu were told there were no staff available but would we like a bag of crisps. Food was adequate. Lynn88
