I’ve decided to book this hotel for two nights based on the positive reviews here on TripAdvisor and a similar site and can confirm that those reports were right on! I am therefore trying to keep my own review relatively concise for you:
The Lincombe Hall hotel is located slightly uphill from the strand, the clock tower and the harbor area. Walking from the harbor to the hotel takes maybe ten to fifteen minutes or so.
I used my sat nav / GPS to find the hotel but there were two streets called Meadfoot in Torquay – and guess what: Yes I’ve entered the wrong one (“Meadfoot close” instead of “Meadfoot Road”) and arrived in the middle of the night in a purely residential area with dogs barking and wondered where now the Lincombe Hall hotel was...
The hotel has an outdoor pool (that however wasn’t used as it was too cold in late June) and a Jacuzzi The indoor pool didn’t look too inviting so I didn’t use it and I also never saw anyone else using it.
What I liked was the beautiful, large English garden with the sun chairs.
There's ample parking space for cars (however the hotel wasn't full during my stay).
I've overheard a conversation that there was a change of ownership in 2009 and that the new owners since have invested a lot of money and continue to do so. I don't know how this place looked like before but it is certainly now in a generally good state (though of course when you look closely you see things that could be improved).
Breakfast was excellent: the breakfast room itself looks stunning! Service staff there is very polite and helpful and the quality of the food (mainly traditional English breakfast) was also superb. Only complain: they start serving breakfast at 8 am, which for me who had an appointment at 9:30 am in Exeter was less than perfect. Maybe they could offer a - reduced - early breakfast for people, especially business guests, who are on the move?
The bar area looked like a large but very cozy living room. I enjoyed this place a lot in the evening! Prices for drinks were in line with those at similar places.
I originally had booked a standard room but was upgraded (?) to a patio room in the annex building. The room was pleasant and well furnished; the bed was comfortable. The small terrace was nice but as the weather was not so good I wasn't able to really enjoy it.
The bathroom was a bit small but everything worked fine so no major complaints.
Value for money
Shortly after booking through a well-known hotel booking website I received an email from the hotel saying that “We look forward to welcoming you to the Lincombe Hall.” I thought that was nice. This has never happened to me before when booking through a travel booking web site if I remember correctly. I paid 44 Pounds per night including breakfast which I consider a very fair deal for what you get. If paying by credit card (my card couldn’t be processed for whatever reason) they add a 2 % surcharge by the way.
Though I was one of the few (maybe the only?) international travelers there I felt very comfortable at the Lincombe Hall hotel. Everyone at the hotel was pleasant and treated me cordially. All in all a very good experience (and I am not that easy to please).
