Bottom Line - Book it and I seriously doubt you'll be disappointed, especially if you like 'old fashioned' service and standards and some great entertainment! We enjoyed our one night stay so much we returned at the end of the week for two more!!
A bit more detail.....
My wife and I decided to break our journey to Cornwall and this hotel was well located (both in terms of our journey and proximity to the town centre - 5 minute walk), had rooms and parking available and a good rating so we took a chance on a late availability DB&B basis in a standard room. The room, like the rest of the hotel, had been refurbished to a good standard and had all you needed for a comfy stay - not least a big comfortable bed! True the walls are a little thin and the odd floorboard squeaks, but it's no big deal when considered against the whole package.
Deciding to go DB&B turned out to be a great decision as the food was very good quality, great value for money (£15 add on) and served by some very friendly and appropriately attentive staff in a tastefully decorated dinning room with a conservatory like extension. OK it's not an extensive menu, but it changes each day and has sufficient choice for most tastes. The Wine list was adequate and certainly the wines we tried were very drinkable and well priced.
Breakfast, served in the same dinning room, was terrific with a combination of table and buffet service. Juices, Fruit, Cereals and a full English available and options on alternatives if you want to pay for them.
The bar was well stocked, had plenty of comfy seating and was reasonably priced.
Entertainment was excellent each night we stayed and a real highlight.
The staff deserve a special mention - incredibly friendly without being intrusive.
As I stated above we enjoyed our stay so much we booked in again on our way back from Cornwall and stayed two further nights. Will definitely be a regular stop for us on our trips to / from Cornwall.
NB: Although we never ventured in the water the hotel has a great (very warm) indoor and (not quite so warm) outdoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi.
