“Breakfasts unspeakable: good job we ate out in the evening”
Reviewed 17 September 2006

We have just returned from a stay at the Babbacombe Hotel, Babbacombe, on the outskirts of Torquay. On the outside it had an AA board with a 4 diamond rating. The rating from these motoring organisations is not to be taken too seriously. The breakfasts were the worst experienced in years. We have stayed in accommodation ranging from top class hotels (mostly abroad) to b&b's either in the UK or the equivalent in France. This place, more like a guesthouse than a hotel, had no idea. A 'full English' breakfast was comprised of the cheapest sausage (only tried once), egg that was always concrete-hard in the middle, bacon that looked alright but tasted cardboardy, and toast that was from the cheapest thinnest cut bread. The cereals were in mean little packs, the jams/marmalades ditto, The tea was colourless unless another tea-bag requested. I could go on and on. There were alternative breakfasts. i.e. one croissant (only one) of the cheapest kind or beans on toast and the toast was never buttered.
We've stayed in B&B's in mid-Hants or North Yorks which were fantastic and took pride in the quality they offered. I would have been ashamed if any foreigners had ventured into this place.

As a regular user of this website, I was most upset to read this review about our own hotel. I hope that you will include this on your website to show fairness to hotel owners. We have been running our business for over 6 years and have always offered our guests the very best of service which has always been reflected in the reviews given by the inspecting body the AA. We pay a significant annual fee for the Quality assurance provided by the AA which ensures our clients have an unbiased assessment of the service we provide. We have many guests who return to stay time and time again , of all ages who are obviously more than happy with our service.
After running the hotel for 6 years I have only received one e-mail of complaint which was in respect of a dissatisfaction with our breakfast and suspect it is from the respondent Chuntzy dated 17/09/2006. I did respond to this feedback with what I hope was a fair and honest reply.
We are a small family run hotel and always intend to offer our guests a friendly service and try to meet the individual needs of all our guests. Of course this does require that they are brought to our attention.
In reply to the comments regarding our breakfast, I must state that the majority of our guests are more than happy with the quality of our breakfasts. Our full English Breakfasts which are requested by most guests are always freshly prepared and served hot to the table and we use produce from reputable suppliers which are by no means of the cheapest variety. Like many establishments of our size and indeed like many 5 Star Hotels our condiments and cereals are portion sized the the reasons of food hygiene and freshness. However, this is not for the purpose of reducing portion size, you are more than welcome to help yourself or ask for more.

However, given that we were advertised as 4 diamond "Guest Accommodation" and with a tariff of 28 pounds/person/ night for the period in question, I do feel that we offer very good value for money, with a good quality of service.

It is quite clear that the previous respondent had high expectations of the breakfast and do not feel it would be professional or worthwhile in responding to the individual comments.

All I can suggest is come and stay and find out for yourselves. You can have as many croissants as you like and I will find the best quality baked beans !

I am writing this as a hard working hotelier who always strives to look after our guests and hope that you will not be put off by the comments of the previous respondent.

Perhapes some of our very satisfied guests will be kind enough to forward their own feedback.
