“Not exactly in Torquay”
Reviewed 29 March 2011

In fact the Trecarn is in Babbacome, very close to the Babbacome Cliff Railway but is conveniently close to the No 32 bus route into Torquay. The hotel has undergone some refurbishment, the public areas downstairs are very nicely done. The dining room in particular is pleasantly spacious, but the entertainment/bar area is short of tables when the hotel is full. Although our room had been refurbished they have "spoiled the ship for a ha'penny worth of tar" new windows are needed and the shower room basin unit needed replacing. We had to get the clock/radio replaced and the shaver light did not work (no maintenance at weekends).
However the staff were helpful and courteous, the food was good, not huge amounts but enough and queuing for the all-inclusive bar was not too bad. It was the usual Shearings standard for a hotel, you are not paying a fortune so you can't expect the Ritz.
The entertainment was the usual Bingo/Quiz/ Dance music which does finish at about 11.30pm. If you want an early night don't have a room over the reception!
Saturday nights compere was useless and the advertised act (Tom Jones tribute) turned out to be Shirley Bassey tribute (perhaps they thought as they are both Welsh we wouldn't notice!
We probably wouldn't go there again because of it's location, we stayed at the Torbay last time we were in Torquay and it is much better placed.

We must have been given a refurbished room as it was lovely. I cannot fault this 4 day break all inclusive of drinks 7.30 til 10.30, although my partner spent most of the night in the bar queue. Trecarn you need to do something about the queue! All staff, Service and Food excellent although not enough of it but if you asked for more they brought it. Entertainment was good too. Tom Jones "look a like" was brilliant and worth a mention but all the entertainment was good. It was an absolute bargain. Booked through Shearings, we chose self drive so cannot comment on that side of things. I would highly recommend and want to visit again as soon as possible.

Just returned from the Trecarn Hotel and i can only say what a great weekend! Never stopped laughing. Lovely refurbishment and we had a beautiful bedroom overlooking the front of the hotel.
The food was fantastic and we had a free bar!!
The management and the staff bend over backwards to look after you and you are made so welcome. We even had a visit from the fire service at one point when the lift broke down. Dealt with very calmly and organised by the manager and her staff.
Well done, hoping to come again very soon

When arriving at the trecarn hotel it looked newly refurbished, but a closer look when i got inside revealed it to be in poor condition. All the ceilings were brown and the hotel had a smell of urine. We were meet at reception by a very stressed out manager (Jackie) and when we asked for directions to the room she was very rude and abrupt, i don't think she new where it was because she directed us the wrong way.We were walking around the hotel for about 10 minutes and decided to risk going back to reception for more directions. When returning back the manager Jackie had gone and there was another girl there, she took us to our room and was very helpful. The staff in the restaurant and bar were very friendly and helpful. We would not return to this hotel because of the way we were treated on arrival, we also spoke to other people on our coach and they were also treated in the same way by this rude manager.

What a fab weekend! If i had listened to reviews prob wouldn't of come but so glad we did. The room was clean and had everything a b&b room should. I requested a room with a shower and got one, although bit fiddly to keep hot, and dripped, but no real problem once got hang of it. Meals fab! Waiter service, very quick, lots of choice on 3 course menu, plus dish of day. Best meals we have had on any trip. Entertainment ok, bit more suited for older couple but still enjoyable.Free bar worked well till last half hour when queues form - but thats inevitable really. I drank rose wine, Rowells, which i must say was prob watered down. I'm a bit of a light weight and can only drink 2 glasses and i'm very pickled. Here I drank 4 and was plain cold sober! Some people sadly do take advantage and stock pile - which there is no need to do as you don,t have to take your glass back to get another - but maybe they should to stop greedy people. Trips out, Plymouth lovely, paid extra for guided tour, which was worth doing, but then its just another town centre really. Brixham dreadful, Dartmouth gorgeous - had boat trip, paid extra. Not sure why they go to Brixham awful and shut! Why not take us to Torquay - would do that myself next time, only 5 min bus trip away. But we had a lovely weekend away and would come again. Downside - Kenny NH bus driver needs to take his foot of gas and onto brake a lot sooner.

5 day trip with National Holidays, and we thought it was a very nice holiday break.
If i was to rate this hotel on its own would be average. Room was dated but was still very clean, beds very comfatable. water in the shower was hot, which is better than some expensive hotels we have stayed in.
I thought the food was good, and tasty, although some may think the portions a little small. No bad thing . i eat too much anyway.
The entertainment was good , and the holiday included a free bar, thats free to a point.
Trips out were also good, Theres a trip to Plymouth and a £6 optional tour around Plymouth and Devonport which is well worth it.
The whole trip may not be for everyone, It was for us, and i did not see too many disapointed faces, Probably go somewhere different next week.
