We arrived at the Norcliffe at 3.10pm on Friday, we were promptly ushered away and told not to return before 4pm. On our return at 4pm the coach trip had arrived resulting in a chaotic check-in as you had to order your evening meal at this time. The lift only goes to the 1st floor which seemed to be a problem for a lot of guests. Our room was dated, but clean with basic facilities. The en-suite was a all-in-one cubicle in a cupboard, so small that my husband was unable to use it and had to use the communal bathroom on the landing. Food in the hotel was basic but OK, breakfast was served on a tea plate making it resemble a child's breakfast. Choice was limited, with each meal order being taken by the owner with his clip board at every meal, whoa be tied if you left the table before giving your order!!! Our first meal was interrupted by what can only be described as a health and safety induction lecture by the proprietor Nick, never before have I stayed in a hotel where this has been required, let alone interrupting people eating a meal.
We spent the evening in the bar as we were with our elderly parents. Nick sat with us all evening interrupting our personnel conversations and boring us rigid with his rambling stories of his great wealth and string of high powered jobs and cars (yawn) he then proceeded to tell us about his suicidal tendencies and paranoia and tramadol use!!!! I can only lead this last statement to be the reason for what happened next, we retired to bed leaving my 80 year old parents in the bar finishing there drinks, he then preceded to accuse them of bringing in there own drinks, despite the fact that we were sat next to him all night, my brother in law who smokes ( so obviously goes outside) was said to be going outside to fill his glass from his car and he continued to say how could he get drunk when he had only bought a tonic water, despite the fact that he served him to a bottle of wine and his wife to 2 double vodka's!!!! When my father told me this the next morning I confronted Nick who said that I was doing the same!!! He personally served me to 3 double brandies and as I say sat next to us all night. My sister DID bring down 2 coffees from the room which he said was fine, but told my parents she shouldn't have because he sells coffee behind the bar (we asked if it was ok to do this!!!) he also 'had a go' at them about the mobility scooters they had hired saying they were not bringing them in the hotel if it rained, this was despite the fact that I rang the hotel to check that they could accommodate them before hiring and his wife kindly gave me a phone number of a hire company. I told Nick that if he thought people were drinking there own drinks he should confront them not pick on the weakest of the group a pair of 80 year olds to which he said I thought your mom was doing it too!!! I said I think he should check his till roll as there were only 4 others in the bar who didn't seem
to be drinking much. He did say if he got it wrong he would apologise, if it wasn't for the fact as my parents couldn't walk down the road we wouldn't have spent another penny in the hotel. My brother in law was chatting to the coach driver over a cigarette who told him he'd heard all the stories about us, so god only knows what he has told other guests about us, nice man......not. This did affect the quality of our stay as we were left feeling very uncomfortable.
On the plus side the hotel is in a great spot overlooking the cliff railway.
Also take note the majority of pictures on tripadvisor (the nice ones) are not this hotel.

on arrival we were greeted by the owner who made us very welcome, but disappointed to find there was no hotel porters and we had to handle our own luggage, and as this hotel has three levels and the lift only goes to the first level it was not very convenient, other than that food was good and the service in the dining room was good, the rooms were comfortable and clean.

Room Tip: first floor rooms on the south side are much more accessible and the sea views are lovely

Just returned from a 4 day break at the Norcliffe. We had a lovely time. The rooms were clean . The food was good and the hosts, particularly Nick , were excellent . Even had time for a swim. The entertainment on Saturday kept us laughing all night. The hotel overlooks the bay and is handy for the town and buses into Torquay. Would most definitely return. Thank you Nick, Karen and Luke.

Room Tip: Room 28 has a side sea view.

My husband and I have just returned from a weekend break at the Norcliffe Hotel, Babbacombe, with Travelstyle. Nick and Karen, the owners, were very welcoming and hospitable. The hotel is lovely and clean and the staff are very friendly and obliging. Rooms are cleaned every day and the food is good and plentiful. The hotel is in an excellent location and this is the hotel we would stay in if we go to Babbacombe again.
