“never again.....”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 July 2012

having stayed in many hotels abroad and in this country I have experienced varying types of staffing....but this place is really unbelievable..never have i been made to feel so UNWELCOME in a place which should strive to make your break an enjoyable one. I went with a small group of 45-55 year old women looking for a weekend getaway but we were treated like backward unwanted guests. the attitude of senior staff is demeaning, offensive and down right rude..one friend was called 'stupid' when asking for a telephone code...a battle ensued when additional mini milk pots were reuested- bing told to buy a cup of tea from the hotel- (though some were eventually handed over) ... other guests were escorted you to their room when they drank their own drink left from the bus trip... the electricity to plugs was mysteriously 'cut off' during the night so no charging your phone or using the TV or kettle (night staff put it back on at 7.30am when asked to).. and the most offensive act of all is that whilst we were in the dining room for breakfast at exactly 8.30 am - staff entered the rooms, stripped the beds and took the towels despite all our belongings still in the room- we were told its to stop people going back to bed even though you are meant to be WELCOME ito use your room until 10am checkout...Torquay itself was beautiful but the trip totally ruined by the poor standard of hospitality.

I agree with other reviewers who comment on the total lack of personal skills customer service by the owners/managers of this establishment. We were made to feel so unwelcome if I had travelled by car I would have got straight back in and left. (the junior staff were all very obliging and helpful, nothing like the management) The general aura and ambience with its rigid rules about meal times etc is reminiscent of the worst sixties boarding houses.
The whole place is in need of major refurbishment and although mainly surface clean needs a proper deep clean.

The meal on our arrival was one of the worst we have ever had none of the four people on our table ate much of the main course. To be fair the meals for the rest of our stay were very good especially considering the low tariff.

The rigid and rushed meal times are not conducive to a nice relaxing dining experience. you are told you must not be late for meals but are not allowed into the dining room until told. You cannot buy drinks at your table. these must be bought in advance as the bar closes at mealtime but no one tells you this. We were told we had to share a table with strangers even though there were empty tables. They relented the next day and allowed us to move to a table of our own.

In our room the carpet although vac'd was stained and dirt was ground in. There were hairs on the shelf below the tv. The quilt cover/bedspread had a number of small bloodstains and although this was readily changed for a clean one something was said which led me to suspect these are not routinely changed between guests, this feeling was reinforced when the night before we left the new sheets and towels were placed on the top of the wardrobe ready for the next day and no clean quilt cover/bedspread was included in the pile. I cannot say that they are not changed this is just my impression.

We travelled with David Urquart coaches to a "carefully selected" hotel. My advice would be to only book a holiday where the hotel is named and can be researched before booking. Even though we only booked a few weeks before travel we were told the hotel we visited would only be decided and notified when the tickets were despatched

We arrived with a coach party.

The hotel room wasn't too bad and have stayed in worse. However the carpet needed a deep steam clean and a wardrobe door hinge was broken. We stayed in room 2. The room was bright but was in a noisy location due to being on a main road. The room was in need of updating and re-decorating. There was a fusty smell about the hotel though.

It was near to the town centre and bars/pubs for people who are interested in a night out. Most of the people in our party were elderly and the hotel is situated on a fairly steep slope which was no problem for us but restrictive for older guests. There was entertainment provided which the older people seemed to enjoy. Torquay is a nice area and there are some nice walks nearby.

The food was the best feature and for a two star hotel highly recommended. The waitresses were very friendly and a delight to be served by and a good 3 course varied menu each night.

Unfortunately on the last morning as my husband was getting out of the shower, the shower mat slipped and he had to re-position it. As I got into the shower, my foot went from under me as the mat slipped and I gashed my left shin trying to steady myself. I mentioned it to the manager who was ok but said they order the mats from a company because the shower mats are non slip and that they would go and have a look at the offending mat. So I feel the need to warn people as they step in the shower to be very careful and make sure they grip the grabrail on wall as they step into the cubicle.

Room Tip: Room 2 was ok but noisy as on a main road.

Arrived with a coach party. First room had a broken bed base with a heavy lumpy outdated and worn mattress, and was cramped with excessive furniture giving literally no room to swing a cat. The kettle had a delightful range of wildlife swimming in it. Room dark and dingy. Noisy soil stack directed through the en-suite. Sink in corner of room with hairdryer wired into wall 18 inches away from sink (with loose socket). Second room much cleaner, and brighter. However the old divan bed was also broken in this room and the equally old mattress heavy and lumpy with springs sticking in you. The shower in this room had two temperatures scald or freeze, if you could get enough water trickling out. Sadly the hotel has an air of the 70's to it, in attitude and decor. Meal times and seating are dictated; you sit where you are told too, with whoever the management decide you will sit with, for the duration of your break. You eat at managements convenience and finish your meal in under 30 minutes. The staff rush to get this acheived and do not offer any extras (sauces etc) as they appear to be on a time limit. Main courses, although mostly edible, very overcooked and appeared to have been standing and congealing, with the majority of deserts looking as if they had been pre-prepared for a local care home in 70's style steel sundae dishes. 3 course meals served and cleared in 30 minutes, all 150. Breakfast beverage choices on the first evening are made for the week. Evening meal choices have to be made during the breakfast, enabling these to be cooked during the day, ready for the mammoth 'one' sitting later. Cold starters are placed on the tables before you arrive.
Both my husband and I have extremely stressful jobs dealing in customer service and community health so were looking forward to a relaxed break. Sadly, the management dictating our table companions, and our meal times effectively took away our right to holiday at our own pace, and actually ruined our long awaited for break. The final icing on the cake being when we queried this, the manager informed us that even his 'paying guests' (which we took to mean his non-coach party guests) were expected to conform to his rules and that it couldn't be done any other way! (Except of course in every other hotel we have ever stayed in worldwide).
It would appear to be done to cut staffing costs, and certainly not in the interest of the customer.

Room Tip: Not avisable for travellers with mobility problems.

Well what can i say!!! this hotel needs a very big update, the senior staff were very rude and need to learn some manners and people skills.A aged gentleman in our party sat in the bar area had bought his bingo ticket and as he takes a large amount of medication dosnt drink alcohol,he had just eaten his evening meal and had a small bottle of flat lemonade wich he uses to take his medication, the owner saw him and rudley told him he couldnt drink his own lemonade in the bar, fare enough.but theres ways to say these things not bawl him out in front of other guests.I felt like we were treated like naughty children, not senior citizens,i expect more respect,we are the paying public.I will be writing to the coach company we travelled with to advise them that they need to reassess this hotel for there guests. The girls in the dinning room were very polite,i dread to think how they get treated by the owner behind the scenens,if this is the way she treats her guests.

Room Tip: DONT go there.
