This was our second visit to Windchimes and not the last. Ideally placed for Torquay and visiting the Torbay area, this property is an excellent choice for a romantic break. Fantastic welcome from the owners, including home baked biscuits straight from the oven as we arrived. Lots of attention to detail in the treats provided, plus the garden is so relaxing. This really is a little gem of a place to stay.
Please note, the spiral staircase may be a challenge if you have mobility problems.

“Great location but very small”
Reviewed 11 October 2014 for a stay in October 2014

Windchimes is described as small and small it is! We were both really surprised at the lack of headroom in the bedroom, I am 5'2" and I could barely stand up, finding that I even had to lay on the bed to get dressed. The stairs are described as open tread and steep and not suitable for the less mobile which is accurate. However, being a fit able-bodied couple we found them extremely daunting, especially if you need to take a trip to the loo downstairs in the middle of the night! The cottage did smell quite musty but I think this may be because it seems to be built partially underground or against an outside wall. We also found that the property was located very close to the owners own home so we did not find sitting in their beautiful garden very relaxing. On the plus side Jacquie and Kevin were very welcoming, attentive hosts and Jacquie bakes a mean cake - GBBO look out! Torquay town is within easy walking distance (wear flat or sensible shoes - my heels stayed in the car) and we had some amazing meals in some amazing restuarants. On our first night we ate at The Rockfish Fish & Chip Restaurant on the harbour front, it is fantastic and they cater for ceoliacs, we had a lovely Italian at Bianco's on Torwood Street and Yim Sung, also on Torwood Street served us the best chinese we have ever tasted - they also cater for coeliacs! We went to the Hole in the Wall, the oldest pub in Torquay for Sunday lunch and, again we were not disappointed! If you enjoy walking there are plenty of coastal walks, our favourite being to Babbacombe where we had a fabulous lunch looking over the bay at The Cary Arms - not cheap but worth it! To sum it all up, we had a wonderful break in sunny Torquay. We were disappointed with the cottage, but if you don't mind crouching down in bedroom it is perfectly situated and adequate for a short break. Oh, and beware of those stairs fit or otherwise! Also, as I said before the owners were great hosts and I hope that they don't take this review as being too negative as we both had a wonderful time.

Thank you so much for your candid review. Windchimes Hayloft, is converted from an original hayloft. It has beams, and low headroom in the romantic mezzanine bedroom, which is accessed by a steep open tread staircase, so is indeed not suited to those with mobility problems. But it is not musty! The shower room does not have a window, but has a fan, activated by the switch for the overhead lights, to keep it well ventilated. The cottage has an insulated roof, floor and walls to keep it warm and cosy. In hot weather to avoid getting over warm, one needs to open the windows as the cottage is south facing. The cottage is extremely quirky and filled with extra touches. It is located adjacent to our home, as indicated, and the garden is shared with us, so those wanting more privacy may prefer a cottage with it's own garden, which we appreciate. Our cute cottage is very tiny. This is reflected in the price. Everything in it is of good quality. We welcome our guests with a bottle of bubbly and home made cake. Quietly situated, the cottage is within walking distance of the town, harbour and local beaches. Torquay is built on seven hills, so sensible shoes for getting around on foot is a good option. The cottage is very much suited to walkers, and those wanting a quiet break. We very much welcome the candid comments - it helps people to make an informed decision about whether Windchimes Hayloft is for them. We've had many many lovely comments about the cottage, and several people booking return trips, and are truly not offended by the remarks. The age of those visiting the cottage ranges from 18 to 70 - indicating how fitness levels have changed for the better, which is brilliant. We clearly indicate in the property information, that the cottage is located, Gite style, next to our home. Windchimes Hayloft is an upmarket, quirky character cottage, offered at a reasonable price, to reflect its tiny size. We will review the property information, to make sure that this is clear to our guests - almost all of whom, have loved and appreciated it, with many wishing to return. Thanks again for your comments.

Liked best: The garden and property,
Liked least: There was a microwave oven and hob, but we didn't use them. I would have prefered a conventional oven.

“A lovely restful, romantic cottage as a base for exploring beautiful Devon.”
Reviewed 17 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

This cottage is very cute and compact with everything you need to properly chill out whilst enjoying the stunning seascape of the South Devon coast. It is nestled in a picturesque garden and very close to local amenities and a short walk to the nearest beach. If you and a friend are looking for somewhere relaxing to come home to after a day exploring the South Devon Coastal Path, then this is definitely the place to stay!

Dear Amy; Thank You for your very accurate and lovely review. We are delighted that you and your husband enjoyed your Honeymoon at Windchimes Hayloft. We have added lots of thoughtful little touches to Windchimes, to make it a comfortable, cosy and romantic place for couples, and for walkers and those wanting a special break in Torquay, which is quietly situated, yet within walking distance of a variety of places to eat, and of course the beach and coastal walks. Thanks again for your review, and we hope to see you both again in the future.

“Never to return”
Reviewed 5 July 2014 for a stay in April 2014

One thing I must say,NEVER pay in advance to this accommodation.I could go on and on but we travelled all over the UK for nearly 6weeks, this was our second stay.Owners are lovely and make you welcome. After being asked Twice for the balance we owed all within the first 20mins we go into the Hayloft. We did have a lot of luggage which meant it all had to stay downstairs, that left one chair.Upstairs a nightmare.Truly they would never pass safety over in my country????Wifi not working had no trouble anywhere else.Bathroom no where to put things. We were to be there 6 nights,ONE was enough. We found beautiful accommodation after that and would be ten stars in comparison. Was the only BAD place we had in 6weeks.Would be fine for a weekend(maybe) Be sure to check out first BEFORE you hand any money over, VERY disappointed.

In the years we have been letting Windchimes, this is the first time we have had such a damning response. We ask readers to look at the pictures of our property, which clearly show the steep open tread steps up to the rather gorgeous mezzanine bedroom. The property is tastefully decorated throughout, and includes very upmarket touches, such as high thread count linen, and good quality crockery. Additional touches include complimentary dressing gowns, and wine and home cooked muffins on arrival, together with tea.

Yes, we did ask for the payment on arrival. We normally insist on the balance being paid in full, a month before check in - as is normal. Some holiday lets insist on full payment six weeks in advance. The only reason we said that it was OK to pay on arrival, was because the guests asked so nicely, explaining a personal difficulty. In the UK it is polite to pay when asked, and it was with some embarrassment that I needed to ask. Twice.

It is extremely unfortunate that the guests did not appear to have looked at the photo's - and the fact that it is stated very clearly that the property is NOT suited to those with mobility problems.

I repeat that the cottage is very upmarket, and we have had so many positive comments from past guests - who live both in the UK and other countries, including Europe and Australia. This is the first time we have had such comments, and I accept that one cannot please everyone, as everyone has different tastes. Almost all other guests who have been aged between 20 and 70 - have said how much they enjoyed their stay at Windchimes, and that they would recommend it to friends and family, and would definitely visit again.

“A Little Gem”
Reviewed 3 March 2014 for a stay in June 2013

Had a most enjoyable week at Windchimes. Property small, but perfectly formed! Very clean and well thought out and fixtures, fittings and linen of a high standard. Jacquie and Keven were ideal hosts - delightful to chat to, but I'm sure they would respect your privacy. Jacquie's home made cakes were delicious and the garden adjoining the hayloft was delightful. Area wonderful for walking and we we also visited several National Trust properties in the vicinity. Thoroughly enjoyed steam train ride to Greenway (Agatha Christie's home). Another highlight was to Coleton Fishacre - walk to the bottom of the gardens there and then walk along the coastal path - magnificent! Would thoroughly recommend a holiday here.
