Having paid a ridiculously small amount for 4 nights dinner, bed and breakfast I did not expect too much on a Shearings self-drive break to this hotel. I was therefore very pleased to find the hotel clean and quite smart in most areas. My single room, though rather spartan, had all I needed was clean, quiet and the bed comfortable. The small bathroom was spotlessly clean and had an excellent shower although the shower enclosure might be a squeeze for a large(fat) person. The stairways and landings were somewhat worn with chipped and scuffed paint on the bannisters and skirting boards.
The staff I thought exceptionally cheerful and obliging, particularly Irene (?) in the dining room and the two ladies (Fran and Trina ?) normally manning the bar. The entertainment was more or less what one would expect for a hotel catering mainly for pensioners, not Las Vegas but pleasant enough and one could retire to the comfortable lounge if it was not to one's taste.
Food was very variable but "adequate" is the only way I can describe it although the Thursday evening"Gala Dinner" was good. Again, at these prices it was excellent value although some grumpy guests seem to expect Michelin 5 star. One guy at my table sent his food back 3 times quite unfairly I thought, once because his grilled tomato was slightly black around the edges - never met such a moaning guy in my life. When they replaced the grilled tomato with a fresh on he said "That's better"- then left it !
The vast majority of clients were coach trip guests on an inclusive deal. The " Bay Inclusive" deal may be worth the extra money if you like a drink (four free drinks per day) - I opened an account and paid £53 for 13 drinks over the 4 nights. All in all I would recommend this hotel for good value. People with mobility problems may find the position half a mile from the seafront a problem, especially returning uphill but a normally fit person should have no problem.
