“Wonderful stay!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 August 2014 via mobile

We stayed at The Cleveland on the 4th and 5th of August. We were welcomed warmly by Lisanne and the brilliant Thomas! After being shown to our beautiful room (we stayed in the superior room and it truly lived up to the name!) tea and homemade cake awaited us. Breakfast on both days was gorgeous and filling with lots of choice. On the Tuesday we enjoyed afternoon tea in the garden with our complementary bottle of wine. Matt and Lisanne are brilliant hosts and really attentive and Thomas is a great little character! We are already planning a return visit in the new year and would definitely recommend The Cleveland to others

Being welcomed in with a cup of tea/coffee and a piece of cake was just what was needed after a 5 hour journey down from London with an 8 month old. From beginning to end this was the kind of hospitality we received. Matt and Lissanne are a wonderful team and are doing a great job. The Hotel is lovely and they keep it very clean.

Our room was immaculate and very comfortable. The walls are nice and thick and although a fully booked hotel, you would never guess with how quiet it is. Our little one did try to imitate the local seagulls at 5:30 am, which made us worried that we might wake up everyone, but no complaints from either side of us and equally we couldn't hear anyone when we were in our room.

Having a young one with you can be stressful while going away, but Lissanne really made our lives easier by being so accommodating.

We knew when we booked we'd be on the first floor. The only hurdle we faced and this is really the ONLY hurdle was probably the buggy access. Being in an old building (i stress very well maintained) its up the front stairs and then our room being on the first floor was up more stairs.
Going out to dinner and then having to carry the sleeping bubs up the stairs and through the well lit corridor proved to be quite difficult even with a pretty well behaved bubs like ours. I'm sure a combination of parenthood experience and one less Devon Dumpling would see this right.-

I'm not sure there is anything the guys here can do about it and it is by no means a complaint as we knew the situation before we booked. But i thought it might be worth noting if your with a very young child.

Again though Lissanne and Matt helped us come to a solution by letting us leave the buggy in there front reception.... and although a hurdle, wasn't something that effected our stay too much.

It's walking distance from the seafront, close to amenities like restaurants and cash points etc has its own car park too.

Top marks from us-I would definitely recommend this hotel and would definitely return. Possibly the best place i have stayed in in a long time.

This is a shining example of how a hotel should be run.

The Cleveland is a lovely building up a fairly steep driveway with parking. It is about a 20 min. walk into town and the harbor. The room was very clean and the breakfast delicious. We hit a hot spell and could have benefitted from a fan which I suspect would have been offered had we asked. The hosts were gracious and helpful. Torquay is a lively place with plenty of traffic although the Cleveland is in a quiet part of town.

From the very friendly welcome when we arrived to the moment we left, Matt and Lissanne made us both feel that NOTHING was too much trouble. We were given tea and home-made cake on arrival, we were loaned their ipad and also an umbrella and given much helpful advice. However, the best thing of all is that both Matt and Lissanne are able to read situations very well, enabling them to know when to chat/offer advice/help and when to leave people to their own devices: much appreciated! The guest house is beautifully light and airy, the rooms are spotless, with the general atmosphere being one of peace and tranquility. A big thank you from us both!

An amazing small hotel. First class in every respect. Will definitely be staying here again and recommending it to friends.
Such a friendly welcome with home-made cake and tea. Wonderful room; comfortable and beautifully clean. The breakfast was super and catered for my vegan needs and the needs of my small grandson.
Very convenient location for touring in Devon.
Amazing owners who go that extra mile to make you feel wanted and welcome.

Room Tip: Our room on the ground floor was excellent. excellent.

It may have changed owners but everything is tip top. The breakfast is superb and the rooms are wonderful. Hospitality from start to finish is really good. Nothing is too much trouble. We shall certainly be going again.

Room Tip: Go for an upstair room, they are bigger.
