“Difficult to find, but an excellent hotel.”
Reviewed 23 June 2012

When we alighted from the train at Torquay Station, really, we only had a rough idea where to find the hotel. So we bought a street map of the town at the station for £1-00. But the "map" was rubbish, only the main streets were labeled, the street where the hotel was located was not even on the map - it was concentrated mainly near the beach, and the hotel was about a mile inland. So don't waste your money on "The Superb Map of Torquay" because superb it wasn't!
We eventually had to ask a shopkeeper where to find the street, from where we can locate the hotel. After some computer research, he eventually pointed to a turning within a hundred metres from the shop itself, and eventually we found the hotel.
The hotel owners were a very friendly, polite couple who allocated us with a very clean, well kept and spacious room with double bed and a spare single bed, suitable for a family of one child. Because the hotel was situated in a residential estate away from the main streets, we had no problems with traffic noise or late night rowdiness from tanked up hoodlums. There was in our room a coffee-making facility provided, alongside a TV. The bathroom facilities were shared with other guests, but we had no problems with this.
Breakfast was served between 8.30 and 9.30 and after self-serving of cereal and orange juice, the main course was the traditional full English breakfast served with toast and coffee. This kept us filled for much of the day.
The hotel was excellent. The only improvement I would suggest is a simple map on the booking confirmation page. But actually, once the area is familiar, the hotel is easy to find. From the station, walk along the promenade until you come to a turning which is Belgrave Road. Walk along this (taking you inland) until you come to Lucus Street, on your right. Turn into this, walk past the church, and St Efrides Street will be the left turning. The hotel is on the top of the hill.

We booked this place because it was the cheapest option. But we were really pleasantly surprised to find a lovely old 'character' B&B with large rooms boasting high ceilings, sash windows and wooden floors that creaked.

Our room was absolutely spotless, the sheets crisp and the bed comfy. We shared a bathroom but that was also sparkling clean and very modern.

The owners were very friendly and helpful (and tolerant - we came with a very loud, wriggly baby and they didn't bat an eyelid).

Breakfast nothing amazing but it filled a hole and you could always stick to toast and cereal if you didn't want a full English.

Loved our stay and if we're ever in the area we will be back - no matter what our budget is.

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was a lovey little b & b, great breakfast, easy access to Torquay, clean and tidy and very friendly hosts. At today's prices it was a bargain. Would stay again.

Just spent 5 great nights here. Decor is old fashioned but everything is spotless .
Room was great and bed was very comfy .
In a good location just a short walk to the seafront and town.
The owners Norman and Nena are a lovely couple who make you feel welcome and there if you need advice .
In short just great.

I have stayed at Ashurst Lodge four times now this year (2012) while visiting poorly family in hospital. I have stayed in a double room no. 5 (?), in a single room no. 2 (?) and in a family room no. 8 depending on what was available. I was only charged the single rate each time.

All the rooms I stayed in were very comfortable and very clean. Norman and Nena Hutchinson who run the place could not have been more helpful and friendly.

The cooked breakfast was very very acceptable and filling; you get cereals, yoghurt, fruit juice, toast, tea or coffee (you can have both if you ask politely) and a full cooked English breakfast or you can choose to have just what you want from the cooked items. Local prices for a similar breakfast come in at about £8.00 plus in a cafe so the room prices are very very good including breakfast (even with out breakfast). If you are vegetarian have a word with Norman or Nena and they will sort something out for you for breakfast.

When I go down again I will definitely stay at the Ashurst Lodge.

We stayed for one night to explore Torquay whilst en route to Cornwall. Very happy with the price which drew us in and the hotel was very good. Very big room with comfortable bed, TV, tea/coffee making facilities. We went for the en suit room and the shower etc was equally just as good. Breakfast was fantastic. Lots of options available plus a full cooked breakfast. Location was good at a 5 min walk to the main town and maybe 10mins further on to the marina etc but not far basically. There are a couple of options but worth noting is that both involve a hill which could be tough for the less able. The owner was also a nice guy who made us feel very welcome, gave us some good tips on a place to eat and cooked a very nice breakfast.
