we booked stay at the Downs for 3 nights from the 29/05/09. we enjoyed ourselves so much we stayed an extra night. The Downs is clean and spacious throughout, the food is good (both breakfast and evening meals). You could'nt pick a better location to spend your holiday. Kate & Ed are the perfect hosts, they are friendly and nothing is a problem for them, even down to borrowing some super glue or mailing a postcard. We had the most excellent Weekend and will return in the near future. We would recommend this hotel to anyone, no matter what age group or amount of people.

Stayed just one night while visiting relatives. We had a sea facing room with double bed and en-suite. The room had a small balcony with terrific views, not that we spent much time in the room though. On the balcany is a small table and two chairs/stools. For the price of £70 for the two of us bed and breakfast I thought it was reasonable. The price is relative to the overall quality of the hotel, being perhaps a little tired around the edges but your not paying big bucks so all relative !

The room was clean and the staff pleasant and helpful though. Other than breakfast, we did not eat in the hotel, so cannot comment on the evening meal quality. The breakfast quality was fine. Only comment was that if you want a lie in, then you may miss breakfast as I recall last orders was about 0915. Perhaps a more generous 1000 hrs would not go a a miss.

Location is ideal, with a council carpark at the rear of the hotel, where you can pay a £2 charge per day to park (purchase a voucher through the hotel, do not pay at the pay and display machine). There are a number of restaurants and pubs a short walk from the hotel. We arrived Sat about 1400 hrs, and used to our all day opening restaurants around the London area, we got caught with the lunchtime closing of virtually every restaurant in Babbacombe.....opps.

Overall, was clean, ideal location and views terrific from the room. Shame about the early breakfast cut off time though. Would we stay again. Yes.

Our break was won in a charity quiz, the 3 night prize was donated by the very generous Ed & Kate. from the moment we walked in the hotel, we were made welcome. 2 of our rooms had fantastic sea views, everywhere was clean and in working order. Breakfast was the best I've ever had in a hotel, the evening meal was also very nice. nothing was ever to much for either Ed or Kate, they even made us fresh crusty sandwiches on the day that we went sight seeeing. No need to go searching for somewhere to get your Devon cream tea, just sit on the front terrace and enjoy your homemade scones, they are the best. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable, I'll be back this time with my family.

Due to an unforeseen family bereavement - we found ourselves trying to find suitable Bed & Breakfast accomodation which would facilitate a couple / single occupier along with a family dog at short notice. After scanning various websites, and making several calls we plumped for the Downs, on Babbacombe Downs, Torquay. We arrived on a grey afternoon, feeling weary after a 4 hour drive - to a warm welcome from Kate Wood, the proprietor - the rooms we were shown to -both had breathtaking views of the Sea each with a Balcony - the rooms were very clean and spacious and warm - with telephones/flatscreen tv's and En Suites, where the showers worked - and fresh/white fluffy towels were left each day. Each morning of our stay we were fed a hearty full english breakfast's with lashing of coffee/ tea - in order to face the day ahead. Every eventuality had been thought of, a book corner / games for children - shoe cleaning machine.....Kate and Ed Wood made a difficult time for us - bearable, even pleasurable, as nothing was too much trouble, and I'd like to visit them in better circumstances and during the summer months - in order to appreciate the facilities / views from those balconies. Thanks Again.

We had a one-night stay with family members whilst we attended a family reunion in Torquay. The hotel is about as close as you can get to Babbacombe beach - albeit it's at the top of the cliff. We had a sea-view and balcony, which I imagine would be great in the summer. Kate and Ed were very accomodating, as were the rest of the staff. They all looked after us really well - nothing was too much trouble. All in all a great place to stay when visiting relatives in Torquay.

  • Liked — the friendliness and helpfulness of the Owners and Staff
  • Disliked — some of the decor needs updating (I know Kate and Ed are working on a continual improvement programme)

Amazing weekend at The Downs Hotel in Babbacombe with breath taking coastal views, the hotel was fantastic, extremely relaxed with superb spacious rooms and mouth-watering food.
Our hosts Kate & Ed were first class, we were made to feel like one of the family, (Kate's cooked breakfast is definately the best in the world).
The hotel itself was well looked after with clean spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, LCD TV with freeview and the added bonus of free wifi connection so we could even keep in touch with family and friends via email.
Our 9 year old said it was the best hotel he had ever stayed in and can't wait to go back! We whole heartedly agree..
Thanks for a superb weekend and see you again soon.

I would highly recommend the Downs to everyone! It is a relaxed and family friendly place to stay. The owners Kate and Ed were super hosts and did everything they could to make our stay really enjoyable.
The room was excellent and with 4 of us there was still plenty of space to move around so we didn't feel crammed in as a family.
We had a 10 month old but that was no problem and the owners did all they could to accommodate him as well (cots, high chairs and food etc).
We can't wait to go back again.
Thank you for a great weekend.
