Gitcombe House Country Cottages
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 August 2013

The cottage was excellent. Well equipped and comfortably furnished. With four noisy kids we could have done with a little more soundproofing in the bedrooms. It was fantastic to be able to let the children roam the lovely grounds freely, a rare treat as we live in London. On the rainy mornings we swam in the indoor pool and played in the soft play area. The outdoor pool was also good and warm.

Gitcombe was perfectly placed for day trips out. We had an idyllic trip to Dittisham where we went crabbing with lines and nets borrowed from Gitcombe. It was a particular highlight! There is so much more to do that we hope to come back!

We have just arrived back after our third visit to Gitcombe with our two children (2 and 5); we stayed in The Coach House which provided fantastic accommodation. This time we went with the grandparents who stayed in the Hayloft, which is opposite. It worked perfectly as everyone got to have their own space and The Coach House, being the larger of the two properties proved an excellent base. The location of Gitcombe is stunning, set amongst the rolling hills of the South Hams, with beautiful walks from your doorstep. We have also stayed in the Hayloft and Meavy and each time we have been thrilled with the accommodation. The Hayloft is super if you have one baby, as it is spacious accommodation for a studio apartment. My husband has just come off the phone to his parents and they are thrilled with the holiday too. The facilities are great with both pools being warm. And the tennis courts proved fun for all. The owners and lady who works at Gitcombe are lovely and offer lots of useful information and are clearly enthusiastic about where they live and what the area has to offer. The area is great for all types of weather as if it rains you have everything from the Plymouth aquarium to the onsite indoor pool and soft play. The local restaurants are super. We thoroughly enjoyed The Seahorse at Dartmouth and my son said the Rock Salt restaurant at Plymouth was his favourite! We look forward to our next trip.

Gitcombe Cottages were lovely - we stayed in the Coach House and it was a home from home. Everything you could need in terms of kitchen equipment, tv equipment, baby equipment (high chairs, travel cots and babygates) and beautifully clean and nicely done. Our only concern was the very noisy pump which meant you couldn't run the tap or flush the loo at night as everyone was woken by it. The facililties at Gitcombe were also lovely - beautifully laid out and the children's areas subtly positioned so as not to disturb others. We have a teenager and a toddler and Gitcombe covered both age ranges for us. It was also only 15 minutes away from almost everywhere - all the beaches, all the shops, all the tearooms and the fabulous seafood. We will certainly go back next year.

Room Tip: The coach house bedrooms had more than enough room for a travel cot or two (which they provide but w...

We stayed here 6 years ago and it was a pleasure to come back with our two young children. Highly recommended for young families. The children loved the swimming pools and the beaches. We loved the Oyster Shack restaurant and the Blackpool Sands restaurant!

We stayed here with a family of four for a week. From the moment we arrived, we felt at home. Beautifully located in a green Devon valley, the old renovated quarry gave us the feeling to be in an other world, of peace and quiet. It breathes a very relaxing atmosphere, exactly what we hoped for, since we're not so keen on subtropic waterworlds and mass entertainment. The clean accommodation was more than above standard and very cosy. All the stuff you would hope for in a self catering cottage was there. Our two boys enjoyed the swimming pool and playground and the site itself as a starting point for nice walks in the surrounding countryside. There's plenty of things to do within one hours drive, Dartmoor is a great place, as is the city of Dartmouth. Enjoy a riverside drink at the Waterman's arms in Tuckenhay!
Conclusion: Gitcombe is a wonderful peaceful place I would recommend to anyone who loves to be self supporting in a quiet natural environment. And last but not least, you'll find yourselves at home straight away thanks to the wonderful owners and administrator. Hope to back some time!

Have had a wonderful calm and peaceful week with my family staying in this beautiful valley. An ideal place to come to with or without children. Lots to occupy you in the grounds with swimming, tennis court and attractive playground and swings for children, or beautiful walks through idyllic countryside to welcoming rural pubs. The cottage itself is well above average in comfort, design and exceptionally well equipped. Sad to leave as could happily have emigrated to Gitcombe!

We have just returned to London with heavy hearts after leaving the beautiful Gitcombe House. In seven years of traveling with small children and grandparents alike, nowhere has been as effortless, enjoyable or relaxing as Gitcombe. Ever aspect, from your arrival, to activities available or the ability to really switch off and tune into rural life, right through to departure have been tried and tested, and the whole experience is smooth, stylish and worthwhile. Gitcombe is so peaceful and secluded we would even consider coming back without children for a romantic break. The outdoor hot rub overlooking valleys and fields of Devon and the two lovely pools are highlights, as is one of the best wooden playgrounds in the UK (small but creative). The swings and subtle sculpture in the gardens are lovely additions and the tennis court kept our budding Murray very happy. We hope to return, always the best sign of a fantastic holiday.
