Having been a visitor to Cafe Asia for many years I was interested and excited to visit Cafe Asia under its new ownership with my family. Like other reviewers on here we had been on the receiving end of the previous owners rather unpleasant manner but have always found the food to be authentic, innovative and freshly made.
Unfortunately on this visit the food was very poor. My soup was a coagulated mass of what tasted like Vesta curry followed by a main course that was of the same taste and consistency. My partner ordered a main dish of chicken fried rice which was not only tiny but the most tasteless and unseasoned thing he'd ever eaten. Our three children ordered standard Chinese takeaway dishes which were exactly that. Standard Chinese takeaway dishes.
A starter of the crispy duck with pancakes was very good however.
The service was great from a very enthusiastic and kind young waiter, and the atmosphere and wine were fine.
I feel sad that the food was so substandard as we have always loved this place and the front of house people were wonderful. Maybe they just need a new chef and to go back to basics. Freshly cooked simple Thai food is what we want!
We will try again next time we are in town.
