Originally in an older style shop near the bend at the top of Fore Street but now well established much further down near the church, this shoemaker's shop sells almost unique and very characteristic footwear mostly in boldly coloured leather, commonly with several colours on the different parts of the boot or shoe and with crepe soles. Unmistakeable. Not compulsory amongst the wash of arty bohemian lifestyle types but frequently worn by them and sympathetic visitors and acolytes. We had some as did our children from toddling age up. Not for routine wear but there was and is a time and place for everything. Some friends recently went back in the hope of replacing a pair bought about eighteen years ago, only to discover that the shop had kept their size and templates of their feet. Although the shop is now in a somewhat tarted up more modern style and the art college has decamped from Dartington to Falmouth, Conkersis is still iconic Totnes.
